The effects of an increased disease mortality rate on the transient and asymptotic dynamics of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) were investigated. Disease-induced mortality of juvenile salmon has become a serious concern in recent years. However, the overall effects of disease mortality on the asymptotic and transient dynamics of adult spawning abundance are still largely unknown. We explored various scenarios with regard to the density-dependent process, the distribution of survivorship over the juvenile phase, the disease mortality rate, and the infusion of stray hatchery fish. Our results suggest that the sensitivity to the disease mortality rate of the equilibrium adult spawning abundance and resilience (asymptotic return rate toward this equilibrium following a small perturbation) varied widely and differently depending on the scenario. The resilience and coefficient of variation of adult spawning abundance following a large perturbation were consistent with each other under the scenarios investigated. We conclude that the increase in disease mortality likely has an effect on fishery yield under a fluctuating environment, not only because the mean equilibrium adult spawning abundance has likely been reduced, but also because the resilience has likely decreased and the variance in adult spawning abundance has likely increased. We also infer the importance of incorporating finer-scale spatiotemporal information into population models and demonstrate a means for doing so within a matrix population modeling framework.  相似文献

Interstitial K+ ([K+]i) was measured in human skeletal muscle by microdialysis during exhaustive leg exercise, with (AL) and without (L) previous intense arm exercise. In addition, the reproducibility of the [K+]i determinations was examined. Possible microdialysis-induced rupture of the sarcolemma was assessed by measurement of carnosine in the dialysate, because carnosine is only expected to be found intracellularly. Changes in [K+]i could be reproduced, when exhaustive leg exercise was performed on two different days, with a between-day difference of approximately 0.5 mM at rest and 1.5 mM at exhaustion. The time to exhaustion was shorter in AL than in L (2.7 +/- 0.3 vs. 4.0 +/- 0.3 min; P < 0.05). Furthermore, [K+]i was higher from 0 to 1.5 min of the intense leg exercise period in AL compared with L (9.2 +/- 0.7 vs. 6.4 +/- 0.9 mM; P < 0.001) and at exhaustion (11.9 +/- 0.5 vs. 10.3 +/- 0.6 mM; P < 0.05). The dialysate content of carnosine was elevated by exercise, but low-intensity exercise resulted in higher dialysate carnosine concentrations than subsequent intense exercise. Furthermore, no relationship was found between carnosine concentrations and [K+]i. Thus the present data suggest that microdialysis can be used to determine muscle [K+]i kinetics during intense exercise, when low-intensity exercise is performed before the intense exercise. The high [K+]i levels reached at exhaustion can be expected to cause fatigue, which is supported by the finding that a faster accumulation of interstitial K+, induced by prior arm exercise, was associated with a reduced time to fatigue.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE:: Controlled outcome analysis of mechanical aortic connectors for proximal saphenous vein bypass graft anastomosis is lacking. We report the clinical and angiographic outcome of patients receiving the Symmetry aortic connector (St. Jude Medical, Inc St. Paul, MN, US) within a multicenter, prospective, randomized study. METHODS:: Twenty-five patients at 3 study sites received aortic connectors at the time of coronary artery bypass surgery. Protocol-defined angiographic follow-up was completed in 19 of 25 patients (76%) at time-points up to 14 months postoperatively; 32 connector anastomoses were evaluated in these 19 patients. Beating heart surgery was performed in 17 patients, and 2 were performed with cardiopulmonary bypass. Age was 69.7 ± 8.1 year; all patients were males. RESULTS:: The connector anastomosis patency rate was 15.6% (5/32). There were no deaths during the follow-up period. Four patients (21%) suffered myocardial infarction and 2 additional patients (10.5%) required percutaneous coronary interventions; one of who required 3 percutaneous coronary interventions, the other received one percutaneous coronary intervention. CONCLUSIONS:: In this nonrandomized cohort of patients, occlusion rate with Symmetry connectors was significantly greater than anticipated. Patients who have received these connectors during coronary artery bypass surgery may require closer follow-up and evaluation. While the manufacturer has stopped producing this device, there has been no recall of the product, clinical support remains ongoing, and next generation connectors have now been marketed. Consideration should be given to discontinuation of the clinical use of Symmetry connectors.  相似文献

In the last years the identification of new legal and illegal highs has become a huge challenge for the police and prosecution authorities. In an analytical context, only a few analytical methods are available to identify these new substances. Moreover, many of these recreational drugs are chiral and it is supposed that the enantiomers differ in their pharmacological potency. Since nonenantioselective synthesis is easier and cheaper, they are mainly sold as racemic mixtures. The goal of this research work was to develop an inexpensive method for the chiral separation of cathinones and amphetamines. This should help to discover if the substances are sold as racemic mixtures and give further information about their quality as well as their origin. Chiral separation of a set of 6 amphetamine and 25 cathinone derivatives, mainly purchased from various Internet shops, is presented. A LiChrospher 100 RP‐18e, 250 x 4 mm, 5 µm served as the stationary phase. The chiral mobile phase consisted of methanol, water, and sulfated ß‐cyclodextrin. Measurements were performed under isocratic conditions in reversed phase mode using UV detection. Four model compounds of the two substance classes were used to optimize the mobile phase. Under final conditions (methanol:water 2.5:97.5 + 2% sulfated ß‐cyclodextrin) enantiomers of amphetamine and five derivatives were baseline separated within 23 min. In all, 17 cathinones were completely or partially chirally separated. However, as only 3 of 25 cathinones were baseline resolved, the application of this method is limited for cathinone analogs. Limited conservation resources necessitate the prioritization of management efforts and one of the mechanisms for prioritization is the identification of hotspots. For some species of conservation concern, hotspots have been delineated, often using individual abundance as the metric. However, areas that attract individuals from multiple breeding populations may be a higher priority for conservation. These areas may have more abundant resources or habitat quality, and multiple breeding populations simultaneously benefit from conservation actions in these areas. We identified non-spawning aggregations of Lake Sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens in lakes Huron and Erie of the Great Lakes. The spawning period in Lake Sturgeon only represents a brief portion of their life and conservation goals need to include non-spawning areas. Based on 12 microsatellite loci, we determined the population of origin of individuals in the aggregations and computed a modified population-level Simpson’s diversity index (pD). Using this criterion, two hotspots were identified. The North Channel of Lake Huron had the highest diversity of represented populations (pD = 3.14). The second identified hotspot was Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron (pD = 1.78). Both hotspots had evidence of long-distance movement into the area. Monitoring of aggregations should continue to assess temporal variability in hotspot delineation.  相似文献

The two new potent anthracycline antitumor antibiotics, morpholinodaunomycin and cyanomorpholinoadriamycin, are nonmutagenic or weakly mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium or V79 Chinese hamster cells, but highly active inducing DNA repair in in cultured rat hepatocytes. Both agents were found to induce malignant transformation in vitro of C3H M2 mouse fibroblasts and mammary tumors in female Sprague-Dawley rats.
