Species boundaries remain unresolved in many scleractinian corals. In this study, we examine evolutionary boundaries of species in the Acropora humilis species group. Five morphologically discrete units are recognized using principal components and hierarchical cluster analyses of quantitative and qualitative characters, respectively. Maximum parsimony and likelihood analyses of partial 28S rDNA sequences suggest that these morphological units diverged to form two evolutionarily distinct lineages, with A. humilis and A. gemmifera in one lineage and A. digitifera and two morphological types of A. monticulosa in the other. Low levels of sequence divergence but distinct morphologies of A. humilis and A. gemmifera within the former lineage suggest recent divergence or ongoing hybridization between these species. Substantially higher levels of divergence within and between A. digitifera and A. monticulosa suggest a more ancient divergence between these species, with sequence types being shared through occasional introgression without disrupting morphological boundaries. These results suggest that morphology has evolved more rapidly than the 28S rDNA marker, and demonstrate the utility of using morphological and molecular characters as complementary tools for interpreting species boundaries in corals.  相似文献

Bacterial biomass and functional diversity in four marine and four freshwater samples, collected from Resolute Bay, Nunavut, Canada, were studied using fluorescent nucleic-acid staining and sole-carbon-source utilization. Viable microbial counts using the LIVE/DEAD BacLight Viability Kit estimated viable marine bacterial numbers from 0.7 to 1.8᎒6 cells/l, which were lower than viable bacterial numbers in freshwater samples (2.1-9.9᎒6 cells/l) (RCBD-ANOVA). Calculations of the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and average well colour development were based on substrate utilization in ECO-Biolog plates incubated at 4°C and 20°C for 38 and 24 days, respectively. The Shannon-Wiener diversity of the marine water samples was significantly greater ( x H'=2.40ǂ.08, P <0.005; RCBD-ANOVA) than that of freshwater samples ( x H'=1.20ǂ.00, P <0.005; RCBD-ANOVA). Differences in microbial diversity between fresh and marine water samples at 4°C ( x 4°C =2.01) and 20°C (x20°C =2.31) were also detected by RCBD-ANOVA analysis. Interactions between water type and incubation temperature were not significant ( F =1.926, F c=5.12). Principal component analysis revealed differences in metabolic substrate utilization patterns and, consequently, the microbial diversity between water types and samples.  相似文献

Food webs in sub-Antarctic lakes: a stable isotope approach   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
In order to improve the understanding of food-web interactions in sub-Antarctic freshwater systems, we complemented earlier experimental studies with analyses of differences in stable isotopes (15N and 13C) among organisms in two lakes with contrasting productivity. The distribution of the stable isotopes showed that the small copepod Boeckella michaelseni feeds mainly on pelagic POM (particulate organic material), whereas the larger copepod species B. poppei also feeds on benthic algae. Furthermore, the predatory copepod Parabroteas sarsi seems to mainly feed on B. michaelseni, but also on B. poppei and the benthic cladoceran, Alona weineckii. Moreover, stable-isotope data suggest that the diving beetle, Lancetes angusticollis, is not only feeding on B. poppei as indicated from experimental studies, but also on the benthic cladoceran A. weineckii. Although the food webs of the two lakes are very similar, they show considerable differences in the distribution of stable isotopes. We conclude that monitoring, experiments and stable-isotope analysis in combination give a reasonably clear picture of sub-Antarctic freshwater food webs.  相似文献

Five belugas, or white whales (Delphinapterus leucas), were tracked by satellite from Creswell Bay, Somerset Island, in the Canadian high Arctic towards West Greenland in autumn 2001. After 1 October, three of the whales stayed in the North Water polynya and the other two whales moved to West Greenland. One of the whales that moved to Greenland migrated south along the west coast, following a route and timing similar to another beluga tracked in 1996. The belugas that moved towards West Greenland from Canada did so before or near 1 October. The movements of both these whales followed a similar timing and assumed migratory route of belugas hunted in autumn in West Greenland. In Greenland, the hunt begins in September, where the first whales are taken in the northernmost community of Qaanaaq. Hunting takes place farther south in Upernavik in October, and finally in November and December, belugas are taken even farther south in Uummannaq and Disko Bay. The whales that remain in the North Water after 1 October most likely do not contribute to the harvest in West Greenland. Based on the total number of belugas satellite-tracked in Canada between 1995 and 2001 with tags that lasted beyond 1 October, approximately 0.15 (95% CI 0.06-0.35; n=26) of the summering stock of belugas in the Canadian high Arctic move to West Greenland for the winter. Genetic studies have indicated that belugas moving east through Lancaster Sound are significantly differentiated from belugas taken in the autumn hunt in West Greenland. These conflicting results suggest molecular genetics cannot be solely relied on to reveal the stock identity of these belugas.  相似文献

The occurrence of Plesiomonas shigelloides in fresh water from six lakes located north of the Polar Circle in the northern part of Sweden was investigated. Bacteriological analysis of the water samples revealed the presence of nine isolates of P. shigelloides from one of the six lakes. All nine isolates were tested for biochemical characterisation, and serological and genomic typing. The biochemical profiles of all nine isolates were identical. Two strains were non-agglutinating for the O and H antigens. The other seven displayed an O19 serotype, whereas H antigen showed non-agglutinating properties. The genotyping results showed that the O19 isolates presented the same pattern, while the two non-agglutinating strains presented patterns that were different to that of the seven others. The results show that P. shigelloides can occur in aquatic environments where the temperature conditions are extremely low for long periods. This could have ecological and clinical importance for the aquatic and terrestrial fauna at these latitudes.  相似文献

Within the framework of the Italian XVII PNRA expedition (austral summer 2001-2002), six specimens of the demosponge Haliclona dancoi (Topsent 1901) were collected by scuba divers at Tethys Bay (Ross Sea), between 18 and 35 m depth. The sponges, enveloped in plastic bags underwater just after collection, revealed in the laboratory the presence of a structured epibiotic assembly on their surface. This assembly appears to be "stratified" into three zones: (1) the sponge body, (2) the sponge basal platform, and (3) a zone in which valves of the scallop Adamussium colbecki are embedded into the sponge itself to stabilise it (snow-shoe effect), if the sponge lives on soft bottoms. Some biological interactions occur inside this epibiotic assembly, ranging from direct predation (mollusc vs sponge) to probable commensalisms (isopod vs mollusc). The hosted mollusc belongs to an Atlanto-Mediterranean bathyal genus (Krachia) never before recognised in Antarctica.  相似文献

A multi-scale study of patterns of biodiversity of the fauna of the upper basin of the Kongsfjord, Svalbard (78°55′N, 11°56′E) revealed that there were low rates of species turnover at distances in excess of 2 km. Where patterns within the assemblage were detected, they were largely the result of changing patterns of dominance within a restricted species pool of, for the most part, small-bodied animals. There are relatively few hierarchical studies of species turnover at the scale we have reported and all report different spatial relationships between faunal similarity and separation of the samples. It is strongly recommended that comparative measures of species turnover, estimates of the size of species pools, or comparative estimates of species diversity should include information on the spatial distribution, relative to habitat patchiness, of the samples considered.  相似文献

Marginal reef habitats are regarded as regions where coral reefs and coral communities reflect the effects of steady-state or long-term average environmental limitations. We used classifications based on this concept with predicted time-variant conditions of future climate to develop a scenario for the evolution of future marginality. Model results based on a conservative scenario of atmospheric CO2 increase were used to examine changes in sea surface temperature and aragonite saturation state over the Pacific Ocean basin until 2069. Results of the projections indicated that essentially all reef locations are likely to become marginal with respect to aragonite saturation state. Significant areas, including some with the highest biodiversity, are expected to experience high-temperature regimes that may be marginal, and additional areas will enter the borderline high temperature range that have experienced significant ENSO-related bleaching in the recent past. The positive effects of warming in areas that are presently marginal in terms of low temperature were limited. Conditions of the late 21st century do not lie outside the ranges in which present-day marginal reef systems occur. Adaptive and acclimative capabilities of organisms and communities will be critical in determining the future of coral reef ecosystems.Electronic supplementary material is available for this article if you access the article at . We quantified immunoglobulins (Ig) in mammary secretions of 12 female southern elephant seals ( Mirounga leonina) at King George Island, Antarctica, using single radial immunodiffusion on agarose plates. Seals were chemically immobilized for milk sample collection at four time points during the 3- to 4-week suckling period. All three major mammalian immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM, IgA) were detected in southern-elephant seal milk. Total immunoglobulin levels and the ratio of Ig subclasses varied throughout the suckling period. Total immunoglobulin levels were highest on the 1st day of lactation, when they represented over 57% of the mean total protein concentration of the milk, and declined steadily throughout lactation, representing approximately 40% of the mean total protein concentration at the end of the suckling period. IgG was the most abundant immunoglobulin class (85.93-93.78% of total milk immunoglobulins), followed by IgM (6.06-13.93%), and IgA (0.14-0.23%). There was no significant difference in IgA levels throughout the suckling period. IgG levels were significantly lower during the second stage (3-6 days post-parturition) than during the first, third or fourth stages (1, 13-15, and 19-25 days post-parturition, respectively). IgM levels were highest during the first stage of lactation; these values were significantly higher than levels measured during the second, third and fourth stages of lactation. Transfer of passive immunity from female to offspring in other mammalian species is correlated with the subclass of immunoglobulin secreted in the milk; species acquiring passive immunity in utero, via the placenta, secrete a preponderance of IgA, whereas species acquiring immunity post-partum, via lacteal secretions and gut resorption, secrete a preponderance of IgG. The Ig patterns and concentrations observed in our study of southern elephant seals are consistent with an important role of post-partum transmission of passive immunity during the pinniped lactation period.  相似文献

The characteristics and habitat of the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) are typical of fish that accumulate high concentrations of mercury. In this study, mercury determinations were made on samples of muscle tissue from Macquarie Island toothfish and the Southern Ocean deepwater warty squid (Moroteuthis ingens). The analysis of mercury in the biological tissues was made by cold vapour-atomic absorption spectrometry following acid digestion. Performance of the analytical procedure was assessed by analysis of certified reference material (DORM-2, dogfish muscle). Mercury concentrations of 16 Macquarie Island toothfish ranged from 0.12 mg kg–1 (550 g, 381 mm TL) to 0.59 mg kg–1 (6,100 g, 823 mm TL), with a mean concentration of 0.33±0.12 mg kg–1. A significant correlation was found between mercury and either toothfish weight or total length. The fish analysed were juveniles, which suggests that larger individuals would have higher mercury concentrations well exceeding food standard code limits for mercury in fish (typically 0.5 mg kg–1). Warty squid, also from around Macquarie Island, had a low mean mercury concentration of 0.086 mg kg–1 in mantle tissue; no significant correlation existed between mercury concentration and either squid mantle length or total weight. It is postulated that the squid have a mechanism, possibly involving the digestive gland, that prevents bioaccumulation of mercury in the mantle, and presumably other body tissues.  相似文献
