Some studies reported testicular disorders associated with biking in mountain cyclists, which include injuries, erectile dysfunction, and higher scrotal temperatures. But none of these studies evaluated gonadal function. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate gonadal function in male mountain bikers. Twenty-two male professional mountain bikers and 30 healthy noncyclist controls were included in the study. The mean age and body mass index were similar in both groups. Fasting blood samples for the measurement of the levels of total testosterone (TT), sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were obtained from all study participants before any physical activity. In addition, because insulin sensitivity and leptin modulate gonadal function, the concentrations of insulin, glucose, and leptin were also measured in the same samples. Calculated free testosterone (cFT) and bioavailable testosterone (bioT) were calculated from SHBG and TT. Basal hormonal levels including insulin, leptin, LH, FSH, SHBG, TT, glucose, and homeostasis model assessment scores were similar between the groups. However, bioT and cFT levels were significantly lower (p ≤ 0.05) in the mountain bikers than those in the controls. Despite the lower mean testosterone levels in the study group, the levels of LH and FSH were similar to controls. Insulin and leptin do not contribute to lower testosterone levels. In conclusion, male mountain bikers have lower testosterone concentrations compared to controls. This alteration cannot solely be explained by testicular dysfunction. The etiology of lower testosterone levels in cyclists appears to be complex and requires further research. The influence of such a decline on the athlete's performance, quality of life, and muscle strength is not known as yet.  相似文献

Background: Helicobacter pylori eradication rates have tended to decrease recently, mostly due to antibiotic resistance. In the present study, our aim was to determine Hp eradication rate with the LAC plus tid metronidazole regimen and the secondary objective of this study was to identify an effective regimen for our population. Methods: Eighty‐four Hp‐positive patients with non‐ulcer dyspepsia were assigned into the same group. Patients were administered the classical LAC protocole (lansoprazole 30 mg bid, amoxicillin 1 g bid and claritromycin 500 mg bid for 14 days) plus metronidazole 500 mg tid for 14 days. Gastroscopy and histopathological assessment were performed before enrollment and C14 urea breath test and stool antigen test were performed 6 weeks after treatment. Results: All 84 patients completed the study. No patient left the study because of drug side effect. Total eradication rate was 75% (63/84). Conclusion: Although LAC plus tid metronidazole regimen achieved a much better eradication rate compared with the standard LAC regimen; this is the first study that has a relatively low success with a concomitant therapy. So in areas of high resistance like Turkey, one cannot expect a high success with any clarithromycin containing regimen and those should be avoided.  相似文献

Genetic diversities in two cultured oyster species, Crassostrea iredalei (Faustino 1932) and Crassostrea belcheri (Sowerby 1871) were assessed using a 581-nucleotide fragment of the mtDNA cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene. A total of 103 C. iredalei individuals and 120 C. belcheri from 12 populations were sampled along the coast of Malaysia. Trees of unique haplotype samples generated based on Neighbor-Joining (NJ) algorithm revealed that many individuals had been misidentified and did not cluster with their presumed species based on morphological identification. BLAST results of DNA sequences showed presence of previously unreported C. madrasensis in Peninsular Malaysian waters (98% maximum identity). The true identity of the Muar (Crassostrea sp.) and Semporna (Saccostrea sp.) populations were unresolved by two BLAST search and showed less than 88% identity with other species in GenBank. Repeated analysis of these two populations using 487 bp of the mitochondrial 16S gene data showed only a maximum identity less than 97%. Hence, the identity of these specimens remains unclear. Evolutionary divergences within presumed species were 0.001–0.011 and 0.034–0.313 between species. Findings from this study have important implications for aquaculture, management and monitoring of cultured populations as well as conservation of wild oyster species in Malaysia.  相似文献

Bacillus strain NS 8, a lipase-producing bacterium isolated from a Malaysian hot spring, is able to tolerate a broad range of temperature and pH, which makes it beneficial for this study. It generated PCR products with molecular weight of 1,532 bp, and the 16S rRNA sequence analysis identified it as Bacillus subtilis with accession number AB110598. It showed a 71% similarity index with B. subtilis using Biolog Microstation System. Its lipase production was optimized using a shake flask system by changing the physical (agitation speed, pH and temperature) and nutritional (nitrogen, carbon and minerals) factors. The most suitable combination of the basal medium for lipase production was 2.5% olive oil (carbon), 1.5% peptone (nitrogen), 0.1% MgSO(4) (mineral) at an optimum temperature of 50°C, pH 7.5 and 150 rpm agitation, giving an enzyme yield of 4.23 U/ml. Statistical optimization using response surface methodology was carried out. An optimum lipase production of 5.67 U/ml was achieved when olive oil concentration of 3%, peptone 2%, MgSO(4)·7H(2)O 0.2% and an agitation rate of 200 rpm were combined. Lipase production was further carried out inside a 2-liter bioreactor, which yielded an enzyme activity of 14.5 U/ml after 15 h of incubation.  相似文献

Direct interaction between 7-chloro-1-cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-8-nitro-4-oxo-1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid and primary α-amino acids (exemplified by glycine, alanine, and l-valine) in aqueous ethanolic NaHCO(3) at 70-80°C for 24-72?h produced the respective N-(4-oxoquinolin-7-yl)-α-amino acids (6a-c). The latter derivatives underwent reductive lactamization upon treatment with Na(2)S(2)O(4) in aqueous ethanol to afford moderate yields of the corresponding pyrido[2,3-f]quinoxaline-8-carboxylic acids (8a-c). Acetylation of 8a-c using acetyl chloride afforded N(4)-acetylated hexahydro-2,7-dioxopyrido[2,3-f]quinoxaline-8-carboxylic acids (9a-c). The structures, assigned to these new heterocyclic products, are supported by analytical and spectral data. The synthesized compounds (6a-c/9a-c) showed appreciable antibacterial activity as compared with ciprofloxacin.  相似文献

New blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) is one of the most important processes required for functional tissue formation. Induction of angiogenesis is usually triggered by growth factors released by cells. Glycosaminoglycans (e.g., heparan sulphates) in the extracellular matrix aid in proper functioning of these growth factors. Therefore, exogeneous heparin or growth factors were required for promoting angiogenesis in previous regenerative medicine studies. Here we report for the first time induction of angiogenesis by a synthetic nanofibrous peptide scaffold without the addition of any exogenous growth factors or heparin. We designed and synthesized a self-assembling peptide amphiphile molecule that is functionalized with biologically active groups to mimic heparin. Like heparin, this molecule has the ability to interact with growth factors and effectively enhance their bioactivity. The nanofibers formed by these molecules were shown to form a 3D network mimicking the structural proteins in the extracellular matrix. Because of heparin mimicking capabilities of the peptide nanofibers, angiogenesis was induced without the addition of exogenous growth factors in vitro. Bioactive interactions between the nanofibers and the growth factors enabled robust vascularization in vivo as well. Heparin mimetic peptide nanofibers presented here provide new opportunities for angiogenesis and tissue regeneration by avoiding the use of heparin and exogenous growth factors. The synthetic peptide nanofiber scaffolds enriched with proper chemical functional groups shown in this study can be used to induce various desired physiological responses for tissue regeneration.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to assess the genetic relationships between the parental palms (dura and pisifera) and performance of their progenies based on nine microsatellite markers and 29 quantitative traits. Correlation analyses between genetic distances and hybrids performance were estimated. The coefficients of correlation values of genetic distances with hybrid performance were non-significant, except for mean nut weight and leaf number. However, the correlation coefficient of genetic distances with these characters was low to be used as predicted value. These results indicated that genetic distances based on the microsatellite markers may not be useful for predicting hybrid performance. The genetic distance analysis using UPGMA clustering system generated 5 genetic clusters with coefficient of 1.26 based on quantitative traits of progenies. The genotypes, DP16, DP14, DP4, DP13, DP12, DP15, DP8, DP1 and DP2 belonging to distant clusters and greater genetic distances could be selected for further breeding programs.  相似文献

The fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) infects amphibians on every continent where they occur and is linked to the decline of over 200 amphibian species worldwide. At present, only three published Bd surveys exist for mainland Asia, and Bd has been detected in South Korea alone. In this article, we report the first survey for Bd in Peninsular Malaysia. We swabbed 127 individuals from the six amphibian families that occur on Peninsular Malaysia, including two orders, 27 genera, and 47 species. We detected Bd on 10 out of 127 individuals from four of five states and five of 11 localities, placing the 95% confidence interval for overall prevalence at 4–14%. We detected no variation in Bd prevalence among regions, elevations, or taxonomic groups. The infection intensity ranged from 1 to 157,000 genome equivalents. The presence of Bd infections in native species without clinical signs of disease suggests that Bd may be endemic to the region. Alternately, Bd may have been introduced from non-native amphibians because of the substantial amphibian food trade in Peninsular Malaysia. Under both scenarios, management efforts should be implemented to limit the spread of non-native Bd and protect the tremendous amphibian diversity in Peninsular Malaysia.  相似文献

Two new alkaloid N-oxides, 1-O-acetyldihydromethylpseudolycorine N-oxide, and 11-hydroxyvittatine N-oxide, ten known alkaloids; arolycoricidine, haemanthamine, O-methylnorbelladine, narcidine, dihydrolycorine, 8-O-demethylmaritidine, stylopine and protopine, nicotinic acid and tyramine were isolated from Galanthus trojanus A.P. Davis & N. Özhatay (Amaryllidaceae). The chemical structures of the isolates were elucidated by UV, IR, MS, CD, 1D and 2D NMR experiments. The in vitro antiprotozoal and cytotoxic potentials of the compounds were also evaluated.  相似文献
