Some blood genetic markers of selected tribes in Western Saudi Arabia

A total of 292 randomly selected subjects belonging to two indigenous Arab tribes (Harbi and Ghamid) and two immigrant tribes (Mograbi and Mowallad), residents in Western Saudi Arabia, have been tested for genetic variants of six blood groups, four serum proteins, and five red cell enzyme systems. The distribution of the polymorphic systems was different between indigenous and immigrant tribes, and the present Arab population shows a considerable degree of admixture from the surrounding countries, in particular Africa.     

Survival of Curvularia lunata var. aeria in soil

Spore suspensions from 7 day old cultures of Curvularia lunata (Wakker) Boedijn var. aeria (Batista, Lima and Vasconcelos) M.B. Ellis were added to soil samples originally devoid of Curvularia propagules. The test fungus disappeared after six weeks of inoculation irrespective of soil amendments, like the application of green manure, urea, superphosphate, or soil cropped to Sorghum (dura) or cotton seedlings.     

Biometric variations in Solea vulgaris acclimatized in Lake Quarun, Upper Egypt

A population of Solea vulgaris was transplanted in 1938 from the Mediterranean to a land locked brackish lake. In 1977, the morphology of these fishes was investigated and a number of measurements made and compared with those of fish caught in the Mediterranean. Among these variations was less vertebrae and fewer dorsal fin rays in the lake soles.     

Produits neutres et alcaloides de Myrtopsis macrocarpa,M. myrtoidea,M. novae-caledoniae et M. sellingii

Stems and leaves of Myrtopsis macrocarpa, M. myrtoidea, M. novae-caledoniae and M. sellingii yielded terpenes, sterols, coumarins, alkaloids (furoquinolines and quinolones) and amides. A new quinolone (8-methoxy flindersine) occurs in Myrtopsis macrocarpa, a new amide (N-benzoyltryptamine) in M. myrtoidea, two new coumarins (myrsellin and myrsellinol) and a new dihydrofuroquinoline (myrtopsine) in M. sellingii. Structures of the new compounds are proposed from chemical and spectroscopic evidence.

Sensory innervation of the gastro-intestinal junction: new electrophysiological, histological and histochemical data]

The sensory innervation of the small intestine was studied in the cat with electrophysiological, histological and histochemical techniques. Thanks to the histochemical technique (peroxydase method) the exact number and proportion of splanchnic and vagal fibres was determined : the latter being about 9 times more numerous than the former. On the other hand the exact position of the corresponding cells was defined in the nodose and spinal ganglia by means of the previous technique and the microelectrophysiological method (recording of single units into the ganglia with extracellular glass microelectrodes). The splanchnic neurones were found in the T9, T10 and T11 ganglia whereas the vagal ones were chiefly located in the lower half of the nodose ganglia. The histological studies using electronic microscope showed many non-medullated endings, which were often found beneath the epithelium and in the lamina propria of the villi close to the blood vessels. This result is certainly the proof that numerous receptors (mechanoreceptors, chemoreceptors and even thermoreceptors do exist in the small intestine.     

Synthesis of some pyrazole derivatives having l-threo and d-erythro side chains

The mixed bis(arylhydrazones) of l-threo-2,3-hexodiulosono-1,4-lactone rearrange into pyrazolediones. Mono- and bis-(arylhydrazones) of isoascorbic acid were prepared; the latter are present in two forms that afford the same pyrazoledione. Acetylation, benzoylation, and periodate oxidation of these pyrazolediones were studied, and some condensation products from the pyrazole aldehyde were prepared. Some of the i.r. and mass-spectral data were discussed.     

Isolation of portulaca oleracea (regla) mucilage and identification of its structure

Portulaca oleracea leaves were found to contain 0.42% of a mucilage mixture. The mucilage was fractionated into an acidic and a neutral fraction. The acidic fraction consists of galacturonic acid residues joined by α-(1→4)-linkages; 60% of these residues are present as the calcium salt, and esterified galacturonic acid residues are absent. The neutral fraction is composed of 41% of arabinose and 43% of galactose residues, besides traces of rhamnose residues.     

Effect of Salinity on Rhizobium Growth and Survival

The microbiological metabolism of warfarin was examined as a model of metabolism in higher organisms, including humans, and to determine the chirality of microbial reductases for application in organic synthesis. Nineteen cultures were examined based on their reported abilities to reduce ketonic substrates, and several were shown to catalyze the desired reaction. Nocardia corallina (ATCC 19070) exhibited complete substrate and product stereoselectivity as it reduced S-warfarin to the corresponding S-alcohol. Arthrobacter species (ATCC 19140) exhibited marked substrate and complete product stereoselectivity since S-warfarin, and to a lesser extent R-warfarin, were reduced to the corresponding S-alcohols. These reductions parallel those reported to occur in mammalian species.
