New biomass crop hybrids for bioeconomic expansion require yield projections to determine their potential for strategic land use planning in the face of global challenges. Our biomass growth simulation incorporates radiation interception and conversion efficiency. Models often use leaf area to predict interception which is demanding to determine accurately, so instead we use low-cost rapid light interception measurements using a simple laboratory-made line ceptometer and relate the dynamics of canopy closure to thermal time, and to measurements of biomass. We apply the model to project the European biomass potentials of new market-ready hybrids for 2020–2030. Field measurements are easier to collect, the calibration is seasonally dynamic and reduces influence of weather variation between field sites. The model obtained is conservative, being calibrated by crops of varying establishment and varying maturity on less productive (marginal) land. This results in conservative projections of miscanthus hybrids for 2020–2030 based on 10% land use conversion of the least (productive) grassland and arable for farm diversification, which show a European potential of 80.7–89.7 Mt year−1 biomass, with potential for 1.2–1.3 EJ year−1 energy and 36.3–40.3 Mt year−1 carbon capture, with seeded Miscanthus sacchariflorus × sinensis displaying highest yield potential. Simulated biomass projections must be viewed in light of the field measurements on less productive land with high soil water deficits. We are attempting to model the results from an ambitious and novel project combining new hybrids across Europe with agronomy which has not been perfected on less productive sites. Nevertheless, at the time of energy sourcing issues, seed-propagated miscanthus hybrids for the upscaled provision of bioenergy offer an alternative source of renewable energy. If European countries provide incentives for growers to invest, seeded hybrids can improve product availability and biomass yields over the current commercial miscanthus variety.  相似文献

The Ventilago Gaertn. (Rhamnaceae) is widely distributed in pantropical areas of Africa, Asia, and Australia. However, fossil records of this taxon are sparse, which limits understanding of the evolution and biogeographic history of the genus. In the present study, we report and describe two new fossil species of Ventilago, V. siwalika sp. nov. from the Miocene sediments of Himachal Pradesh, western Himalaya, and V. pliocenica sp. nov. from the Pliocene sediments of Jharkhand, eastern India based on single-winged samaras. Ventilago pliocenica is characterized by a prominent midvein, obtuse to sub-round apex with mucronate tip, longitudinal secondary veins extending the full length of the fruit, and reticulate nature of higher-order veins, the presence of equatorial rim, the hypanthium, and short pedicel. On the other hand, V. siwalika is characterized by a prominent midvein, obtuse to sub-round apex with mucronate tip, longitudinal secondary veins extending the full length of the fruit, and reticulate nature of higher-order veins. Our discovery represents the first unambiguous fossil record of single-winged samara of Ventilago from India and provides valuable insights into the evolution of this genus. In this paper, we also review its biogeographic history and add new information to understand its hypothetical migration route. Present and earlier records of Ventilago also suggest that this genus was a common forest element during Neogene (Miocene time) in Asia.  相似文献

In the bivalve mollusc Pecten maximus, the size of the mitochondrial DNA molecules ranges from 20 to 25.8 kbp. This variability is mainly correlated with the occurrence of a variable domain composed with two to five 1.6-kbp repeated units tandemly arrayed in the genome. DNA fragments spanning the 1,586-base-pair-long repeated element and the nearest flanking gene have been cloned and sequenced. This sequence was analyzed regarding its base composition and potential secondary structures. The repeated unit domain was positioned and oriented with regard to the known flanking gene. It ends 2 base pairs upstream relative to the beginning of the tRNAgly gene. The peculiar properties of the repeated unit were compared with those of the 1,442-bp repeated element found in the mitochondrial genome of the deep sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus. This comparison provided evidence for the absence of nucleotide conservation, except for a small sequence engaged in a secondary structure, but argued for a strong pressure maintaining domains with specific nucleotide content. Cretaceous and early Paleocene benthic foraminifera were studied from one section along the western Gaj River, southern Balochistan, Pakistan, to reconstruct the paleoenvironment of the Tethys Sea during the Indian-Asian contact. We recognize three lithostratigraphic units in ascending order: the Mughal Kot Formation, the Pab Sandstone, and the Jamburo Group. Both the Maastrichtian Mughal Kot Formation, which consists of shale with grey marly limestone, and the Maastrichtian Pab Sandstone, which consists of quartzose sandstone, indicate an open ocean environment as they have diversified planktic and benthic foraminiferal assemblages. The Maastrichtian-Paleocene Jamburo Group, consisting of dark grey, calcareous shale and marlstone with some sulfide grains, is characterized by low diversities of benthic assemblages. The change to the lower diversities may be associated with the development of poor circulation of deeper water that was caused by narrowing of the Tethys Sea.The Trochammina spp. Assemblage from the Jamburo Group, which can be correlated with flysch-type agglutinated foraminiferal assemblages, has a low benthic species diversity, indicating an unfavorable condition for calcareous foraminifera because of the development of oxygen-depleted water. The absolute abundance of agglutinated specimens shows a remarkable change from low numbers in the Maastrichtian to high ones in the Paleocene. The benthic foraminiferal evidence supports the hypothesis that the collision of the Asian and Indian plates occurred near the end of the Cretaceous.  相似文献

Bovine gastric mucosal and muscle microsomes synthesize prostaglandins and thromboxane b/ (TXB2) from aratchidonic acid (AA). TXB2 and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha (6-keto-PGF1 alpha) were the majro products synthesized by pylorus, body, and cardiac region of the gastric mucosa. Gastric muscle mainly synthesized 6-keto-PGF1 alpha. TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha synthesis occurs at an appreciable rate from endogenous precursors but more rapidly with added arachidonate. Prostaglandins E2, F2 alpha and D2 were synthesized in smaller amounts under the conditions studied.  相似文献

l-threo-2,3-Hexodiulosono-1,4-lactone 2-(arylhydrazones) (2) were prepared by condensation of dehydro-l-ascorbic acid with various arylhydrazines. Reaction of 2 with hydroxylamine gave the 2-(arylhydrazone) 3-oximes (3). On boiling with acetic anhydride, 3 gave 2-aryl-4-(2,3-di-O-acetyl-l-threo-glycerol-l-yl)-1,2,3-triazole-5-carboxylic acid 5,41-lactones (4). On treatment of 4 with liquid ammonia, 2-aryl-4-(l-threo-glycerol-l-yl)-1,2,3-triazole-5-carboxamides (5) were obtained. Acetylation of 5 with acetic anhydride-pyridine gave the triacetates, and vigorous acetylation with boiling acetic anhydride gave the tetraacetyl derivatives. Periodate oxidation of 5 gave the 2-aryl-4-formyl-1,2,3-triazole-5-carboxamides (8), and, on reduction, 8 gave the 2-aryl-4-(hydroxymethyl)-1,2,3-triazole-5-carboxamides, characterized as the monoacetates and diacetates. Controlled reaction of 2 with sodium hydroxide, followed by neutralization, gave 3-(l-threo-glycerol-l-yl)-4,5-isoxazolinedione 4-(arylhydrazones), characterized by their triacetates. Reaction of 2 with HBr-HOAc gave 5-O-acetyl-6-bromo-6-deoxy-l-threo-2,3-hexodiulosono-1,4-lactone 2-(arylhydrazones); these were converted into 4-(2-O-acetyl-3-bromo-3-deoxy-l-threo-glycerol-l-yl)-2-aryl-1,2,3-triazole-5-carboxylic acid 5,41-lactones on treatment with acetic anhydride-pyridine.  相似文献

Summary A characterization was conducted on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecules extracted separately from 107 European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) both wild and domestic, 13 European hares (Lepus capensis), and 1 eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus). Experimentally this study took into account restriction site polymorphism, overall length variation of the noncoding region, and numbers of repeated sequences. Nucleotide divergences indicate that the mtDNAs from the three species derived from a common ancestor some 6–8 million years (Myr) ago. Every animal appeared heteroplasmic for a set of molecules with various lengths of the noncoding region and variable numbers of repeated sequences that contribute to them. This systematic heteroplasmy, most probably generated by a rate of localized mtDNA rearrangements high enough to counterbalance the cellular segregation of rearranged molecules, is a shared derived character of leporids.The geographic distribution of mtDNA polymorphism among wild rabbit populations over the western European basin shows that two molecular lineages are represented, one in southern Spain, the second over northern Spain, France, and Tunisia. These two lineages derived from a common ancestor some 2 Myr ago. Their present geographical distribution may be correlated to the separation of rabbits into two stocks at the time of Mindel glaciation.Finally the distribution of mtDNA diversity exhibits a mosaic pattern both at inter- and intrapopulation levels.  相似文献
