Climate change is expected to influence the viability of populations both directly and indirectly, via species interactions. The effects of large‐scale climate change are also likely to interact with local habitat conditions. Management actions designed to preserve threatened species therefore need to adapt both to the prevailing climate and local conditions. Yet, few studies have separated the direct and indirect effects of climatic variables on the viability of local populations and discussed the implications for optimal management. We used 30 years of demographic data to estimate the simultaneous effects of management practice and among‐year variation in four climatic variables on individual survival, growth and fecundity in one coastal and one inland population of the perennial orchid Dactylorhiza lapponica in Norway. Current management, mowing, is expected to reduce competitive interactions. Statistical models of how climate and management practice influenced vital rates were incorporated into matrix population models to quantify effects on population growth rate. Effects of climate differed between mown and control plots in both populations. In particular, population growth rate increased more strongly with summer temperature in mown plots than in control plots. Population growth rate declined with spring temperature in the inland population, and with precipitation in the coastal population, and the decline was stronger in control plots in both populations. These results illustrate that both direct and indirect effects of climate change are important for population viability and that net effects depend both on local abiotic conditions and on biotic conditions in terms of management practice and intensity of competition. The results also show that effects of management practices influencing competitive interactions can strongly depend on climatic factors. We conclude that interactions between climate and management should be considered to reliably predict future population viability and optimize conservation actions.  相似文献

Proteins in the soluble and insoluble fractions, extracted frommature castor bean cv. Hale seed cotyledons, differ quantitativelyand qualitatively from their counterparts extracted from theendosperm. The soluble fraction contains no glycoproteins, andthe lectins RCA1 and ricin D are absent. While the insolubleproteins are electrophoretically and immunologically similarto those in the endosperm, they do not form the 100 kD subunitdimers which characterize some of the endosperm insoluble crystalloidproteins. Rapid rates of deposition of all of the soluble andinsoluble proteins present in the mature seed cotyledons commences30–35 d after pollination (DAP) and continues until 45DAP. These proteins are mobilized rapidly beginning 1–2d after seed imbibition and this coincides with an increasein specific activity, in the cotyledons, of two aminopeptidasesand a carboxypeptidase. The soluble and insoluble proteins inthe cotyledons of the mature seed probably function as storageproteins and support the growth of the germinated seed priorto the mobilization of the major protein storage reserves ofthe endosperm. Multi-sea-winter Atlantic salmon (75–115 cm fork length L F, 2–4-winter fish) were radio-tagged in the Tanafjord (700 N), Norway, in 1992–1993, and 130 fish entered the large subarctic River Tana (Teno). They entered the fresh water at any time of the tidal cycle but more so during the high and ebbing tides. No diel rhythm was detected in river entry under polar day conditions. There were no differences in the change of flow between days when salmon moved and when they did not, but during active migration increasing discharge was associated with increased swimming activity of salmon, especially later in the summer. Increasing air temperature was also associated with enhanced migration activity. Low river flow was associated with increasing delay in salmon passing the first riffle area of the river, 35 km from the sea.  相似文献

A total of 6,324 base pairs, distributed on eight different regions of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were re-sequenced for 32 specimens of Norwegian farmed and wild Atlantic salmon. A total of 16 new and three previously reported single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected. These SNPs were validated using 240 farm and 119 wild Norwegian salmon. Alignments of sequences obtained in this study and previously published sequences revealed another 15 previously unreported SNPs. The panel of mitochondrial SNPs detected in the present study will, in combination with previously identified SNPs, prove useful in designing efficient assays for analyzes of mtDNA variation.  相似文献

Mn(III) is a one-electron oxidant, produced in vivo by the Mn peroxidases of white-rot fungi, and thought to be involved in lignin degradation by these organisms. However, Mn(III) has not been shown to oxidize the major nonphenolic substructures of lignin under mild conditions. We have used Mn(III) acetate as a biomimetic model for enzymatically generated Mn(III), and report that low concentrations of this oxidant suffice to oxidize nonphenolic lignin models at physiological temperatures and pH values. Under these conditions, the monomeric lignin model veratryl alcohol was oxidized to veratraldehyde, and the diarylpropane model 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-phenylpropanol was oxidatively cleaved to veratraldehyde, 1-phenylethanol, and acetophenone. In an attempt to identify other lignin models that might be oxidized by Mn(III) more rapidly, we compared the rates at which Mn(III) was reduced by two guaiacyl models, veratryl alcohol and 1-(3-methoxy-4-isopropoxyphenyl)ethanol, vs two syringyl models, 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl alcohol and 1-(3,5-dimethoxy-4-isopropoxyphenyl)ethanol. The results were the opposite of those predicted: the syringyl models were oxidized slower than the guaiacyl models by Mn(III). To investigate the basis for this unexpected result, we recorded the visible absorption spectra of charge-transfer complexes prepared between each of the lignin models and an electron acceptor, tetracyanoethylene or p-chloranil. The results, in general agreement with the kinetic findings, showed that the nonphenolic syringyl lignin models had higher ionization potentials than the guaiacyl models.  相似文献

Geckos are a highly diverse group of lizards, with more than 1,700 species that exhibit a wide range of behaviors, ecologies, and sizes. However, no study has examined links between habitat use and body shape in pad-bearing geckos. We set out to answer a basic question using a data set of pad-bearing geckos (112 species, 103 pad-bearing, 9 padless, 42 genera): Do geckos that occur in different habitats also differ in body shape? Overall, we found that body shape was surprisingly similar among our sample of pad-bearing species, with the exception of the genus Uroplatus, which was clearly distinct from other geckos due to its depressed body and long limbs. However, the padless geckos differed in body shape from the pad-bearing geckos by having longer arms and legs and less rotund bodies. We found that about half of the pad-bearing species primarily inhabit trees, with the other half, divided approximately equally among rocks, the ground, and mixed habitats. We found no significant links between habitat use and body shape, nor any propensity for larger species to occupy different habitats than smaller species. Padless species tend to inhabit rock and ground substrates. Our results indicate that pad-bearing geckos have a relatively uniform body form, which contrasts with to their diversity in color, size, and behavior. Indeed, our data show that the general gecko body shape is suitable for a wide range of habitats, ranging from arboreal to terrestrial. This pattern is a departure from other ecomorphological studies and suggests that geckos may not easily fit into the mold of adaptive radiation, as suggested by prior studies.  相似文献
