Competitive habitat utilization in the damselfly,Mnais nawai (Zygoptera: Calopterygidae) coexisting with a related species,Mnais pruinosa

Reproductive behaviors related to habitat utilization were studied in males of the damsefly,Mnais nawai, which has two male forms, territorial orange-winged males (nawai) and non-territorial pale-orange-winged males (sahoi), at the upper part of a mountain stream where they partiallycoexist with a related species,Mnais pruinosa, which also has two male forms, territorial orange-winged males (esakii) and non-territorial hyaline-winged males (strigata). These two species showed parapatric distribution; the lower part of the stream was occupied byM. nawai, and the upper part byM. pruinosa. In the present study, cross-matings occurred between bothMnais species, although normal intraspecific matings occurred more frequently than cross-matings. Territorial males of both species copulated with conspecific females that entered their territory and guarded the ovipositing females, probably to avoid sperm displacement resulting from subsequent copulations. Severe competition for oviposition sites by territorial males even occurred between the two species. On the other hand, non-territorial males of both species have alternative mating strategies (including several tactics such as sneaking, takeover and interception). The possible benefits from conflict among territorial males of both species is discussed.     

Immunocytochemical localization of 5α-reductase type 1 in the prostate of normal and castrated rats

We immunohistochemically studied the localization of 5-reductase type 1 in combination with androgen receptor (AR) expression in individual lobes of the prostates of intact and castrated rats. In the normal rat prostate, 5-reductase was localized in the cytoplasm of most epithelial cells in the ventral, dorsal, and lateral type 1 (L1) lobes. Epithelial cells of lateral type 2 (L2) lobes were negative for 5-reductase. AR was present in the nuclei of all epithelial and stromal cells throughout the prostate. The number of 5-reductase-immunoreactive cells rapidly decreased in the ventral and L1 lobes after castration, whereas many positive cells remained in the dorsal lobe even at 4 weeks after castration. AR immunostaining was lost in the ventral, dorsal, and L1 lobes at 1 week after castration, but remained in the L2 lobe of 4-week-castrated rats. Electron microscopic immunocytochemistry showed that 5-reductase was exclusively localized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum membranes and that there were no distinct structural differences between the positively and negatively stained epithelial cells. These findings suggested that the expression of 5-reductase type 1 in the epithelial cell is heterogeneous within and among the individual lobes of the rat prostate, and does not correspond to AR expression.     

Photo-induced activation of cytochrome P450/reductase fusion enzyme coupled with spinach chloroplasts

Summary Photoactivation of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase was studied using a combination of spinach chloroplasts and yeast microsomes containing rat P4501A1/yeast reductase fusion enzyme. Under illumination, in the reaction mixture, NADP was reduced, transferring electrons to the P450/reductase fusion enzyme to convert 7-ethoxycoumarin to 7-hydroxycoumarin.     

On-line state recognition in a yeast fed-batch culture using error vectors

The physiological states with respect to cell growth and ethanol production in a yeast fed-batch culture expressed in linguistic form could be recognized on-line by fuzzy inferencing based on error vectors. The error vector was newly defined here in a macroscopic elemental balance equation. The physiological states for cell growth and ethanol production were characterized by error vectors using many experimental data from fed-batch cultures. Fuzzy membership functions were constructed from the frequency distributions of the error vectors and state recognition was performed by fuzzy inferencing. In particular, an unusual physiological state for a yeast cultivation, in which aerobic ethanol production was accompanied by very low cell growth, could be recognized accurately. According to the results of the state recognition, an energy parameter, the P/O ratio in the metabolic reaction model was adaptively estimated, and the cell growth was successfully evaluated with the estimated P/O. Self-organization of the velocity selectivity of a directionally selective neural network

We first present a mathematical analysis of the relation between the parameters and the behavior of the basic module in the proposed neural network model for visual motion detection. Based on the analytical results, a learning rule is put forth that can develop velocity selectivity of directionally selective cells in the basic module. The learning rule is furthermore introduced into the total model called a mass model, which is constructed with many basic modules. Numerical simulation results showed that each basic module in the mass model learned in a self-organizing manner to acquire selectivity for the velocity of an input stimulus. The proposed learning rule would be plausible in the actual nervous system in that it is simple and can be described with only local information.     

Different incorporation rates of arachidonic acid into alkenylacyl-, alkylacyl- and diacylphosphatidylethanolamine of rat erythrocytes

Rat erythrocyte phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) consists of 60% alkenylacyl, 5% alkylacyl and 35% diacyl types. The fatty acid at the 2-position of these types is mainly composed of arachidonic acid. When intact rat erythrocytes were incubated with exogenous arachidonic acid, about 90% of the arachidonic acid incorporated into the PE fraction was found in the 2-position of the diacyl type. The rates of incorporation of arachidonic acid into alkenylacyl-, alkylacyl- and diacylPE were 78, 134 and 1360 pmol/h per mumol of the corresponding PE, respectively. The substrate specificities of endogenous phospholipase A2 and acyl-CoA:lysophospholipid acyltransferase were observed. DiacylPE was hydrolysed rapidly by endogenous phospholipase A2, while alkenylacyl- and alkylacylPE were poor substrates for the enzyme. The selective transfer of arachidonic acid into the 2-position of 1-acyl-lysoPE was observed. 1-Alkenyl- and 1-alkyl-lysoPE were also poor substrates for acyl-CoA:lysophospholipid acyltransferase. The acyltransferase activities with the lysoPE analogues were higher than the phospholipase A2 activities with PE analogues. These results suggest that the different incorporation rates of arachidonic acid into alkenylacyl-, alkylacyl- and diacylPE are based on the substrate specificity of endogenous phospholipase A2.     

Immune response induced by live attenuated varicella vaccine and short term follow-up on immunity of the vaccinated children

Live attenuated varicella vaccine (Oka strain, 500 to 750 PFU) was inoculated into 234 children with various underlying diseases. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) specific immune adherence hemagglutination antibody developed in 95% of initially seronegative subjects. VZV specific cellular immune responses were detected in 91% of subjects within 6 weeks after vaccination. A preliminary survey of 46 vaccinated normal-risk subjects during the first and the third year revealed excellent protection with the exception of one case who had not shown any antibody response at the fourth week.     

Serum thyroglobulin concentration in normal pregnancy

We measured the levels of serum thyroglobulin (Tg) in 52 pregnant females at various stages and compared them with those of 15 age-matched nonpregnant females. Serum Tg was measured by a solid-phase immunoradiometric assay. In pregnant females, mean serum Tg levels at the first, second, early third, and late third trimesters were 8.4 (range; 1.3-18.0), 9.2 (1.7-25.6), 10.1 (1.8-22.8), and 12.1 ng/ml (5.3-25.2), respectively. The statistical comparison was made after logarithmic transformation of the data. The mean value only at the late third trimester was significantly higher than that of controls (mean; 6.0 ng/ml, range; 1.5-23.6), but each value was within the normal range. Although serum Tg levels have been reported to be high at the end of pregnancy, our results indicate that the Tg levels in females could be clinically interpreted without regard to the coexistence of pregnancy.     

A chemiluminescent probe specific for singlet oxygen

We have synthesized a methoxyvinylpyrene (MVP) in order to model the mechanism for the observed microsomal chemiluminescence of benzo[a]pyrene 7,8-dihydrodiol, the proximate carcinogenic metabolite of benzo[a]pyrene. This MVP analog has been found to be a highly efficient and specific chemiluminescent probe for picomole quantities of singlet oxygen and singlet oxygen equivalents, and it produces significant chemiluminescence when reacted with cytochrome P-450 enzymes.
