In a previous report, we have described novel anti-malarial compounds based on a 2,5-diaminobenzophenone scaffold. Here, we have invesigated acryloyl derivatives carrying a biaryl structure consisting of a terminal aryl residue and a central 2-furyl ring. Several compounds were obtained in the series of para-substituted phenylfurylacryloyl derivatives that displayed improved anti-malarial activity in comparison to earlier described derivatives. From the structure-activity relationships it can be deduced that there has to be a lipophilic moiety in the para-position of the terminal phenyl residue. Furthermore, there are indications that, alternatively, activity may benefit from the presence of a polar moiety with hydrogen bond acceptor properties.  相似文献

Human activities are affecting the environment at continental and global scales. An example of this is the Mississippi basin where there has been a large scale loss of wetlands and water quality deterioration over the past century. Wetland and riparian ecosystems have been isolated from rivers and streams. Wetland loss is due both to drainage and reclamation, mainly for agriculture, and to isolation from the river by levees, as in the Mississippi delta. There has been a decline in water quality due to increasing use of fertilizers, enhanced drainage and the loss of wetlands for cleaning water. Water quality has deteriorated throughout the basin and high nitrogen in the Mississippi river is causing a large area of hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico adjacent to the Mississippi delta. Since the causes of these problems are distributed over the basin, the solution also needs to be distributed over the basin. Ecotechnology and ecological engineering offer the only ecologically sound and cost-effective method of solving these problems. Wetlands to promote nitrogen removal, mainly through denitrification but also through burial and plant uptake, offer a sound ecotechnological solution. At the level of the Mississippi basin, changes in farming practices and use of wetlands for nitrogen assimilation can reduce nitrogen levels in the River. There are additional benefits of restoration of wetland and riverine ecosystems, flood control, reduction in public health threats, and enhanced wildlife and fisheries. At the local drainage basin level, the use of river diversions in the Mississippi delta can address both problems of coastal land loss and water quality deterioration. Nitrate levels in diverted river water are rapidly reduced as water flows through coastal watersheds. At the local level, wetlands are being used to treat municipal wastewater. This is a cost-effective method, which results in improved water quality, enhanced wetland productivity and increased accretion. The problems in the Mississippi basin serves as an example for other watersheds in the Gulf of Mexico. This is especially important in Mexico, where there is a strong need for economical solutions to ecological problems. The Usumacinta delta-Laguna de Terminos regional ecosystem is an example where ecotechnological approaches offer realistic solutions to environmental problems.  相似文献

Simulation modeling with uncertainty analysis was applied to the question of nonpoint source pollution control through extensive wetland restoration. The model was applied to the Quanicassee River basin, a tributary stream to Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron in northeastern Michigan, USA. An estimate of the role of the existing 695 ha of riverside and lake-side wetlands in the lower Quanicassee River basin suggests that they retain 1.2 metric tons of phosphorus per year (mt P/yr), or 2.5% of the total phosphorus load from the basin. A simple Vollenweider-type model of phosphorus retention by created wetlands, calibrated with 3-years of data from two wetland sites in Midwestern USA, was used to estimate the effect of major wetland restoration in the basin. For a wetland restoration project involving 15% of the Quanicassee River basin or 3,120 ha of wetlands, an estimated 33 mt P/yr could be retained, assuming a proper hydrologic connection between the wetlands and the river. This would represent a reduction of two-thirds of the existing phosphorus load to the Bay from the Quanicassee River basin. Large-scale wetland restoration appears to be a viable management practice for controlling phosphorus and other nonpoint source pollution from entering Saginaw Bay. It is an alternative that meets two major resource goals – developing wetland habitat and controlling pollution to the Great Lakes.  相似文献

Water column metabolism is a major component in the functioning of wetland ecosystems and can be used as an indicator of ecosystem health. The effect of hydrologic pulsing on water column metabolism was studied with 2 year's field data and a validated model for two 1-ha created riparian wetlands in Columbus, OH, USA. Aquatic gross primary productivity (GPP) was measured during hydrologic pulses the first week of April, May and June of 2004 and compared to GPP during steady flow-conditions in April, May and June 2005. Pulses reduced diurnal variation of water temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen, and negatively affected GPP rates. Mean GPP measured during hydrologic flood pulses was 5.4 ± 2.6 kcal m−2 day−1, significantly lower than that measured for comparable months with steady-flow hydrology (10.8 ± 3.3 kcal m−2 day−1). Solar-normalized productivity values of 0.08 ± 0.01% of solar energy during pulses and 0.2 ± 0.02% for steady-flow conditions were also significantly different. Different hyperbolic curves of optimum productivity with water temperature were seen for pulsing and steady-flow conditions. A simulation model with hydrology, metabolism, and dissolved oxygen sub models was calibrated with 2005 steady-flow year data and validated with 2004 pulse year data. Results from both the field study and model simulations suggest that there was a threshold hydraulic inflow rate between 30 and 50 cm day−1 where aquatic metabolism became negatively affected by flow.  相似文献

High productivity and waterlogged conditions make many freshwater wetlands significant carbon sinks. Most wetland carbon studies focus on boreal peatlands, however, with less attention paid to other climates and to the effects of hydrogeomorphic settings and the importance of wetland vegetation communities on carbon sequestration. This study compares six temperate wetland communities in Ohio that belong to two distinct hydrogeomorphic types: an isolated depressional wetland site connected to the groundwater table, and a riverine flow‐through wetland site that receives water from an agricultural watershed. Three cores were extracted in each community and analyzed for total carbon content to determine the soil carbon pool. Sequestration rates were determined by radiometric dating with 137Cs and 210Pb on a set of composite cores extracted in each of the six communities. Cores were also extracted in uplands adjacent to the wetlands at each site. Wetland communities had accretion rates ranging from 3.0 to 6.2 mm yr?1. The depressional wetland sites had higher (P < 0.001) organic content (146 ± 4.2 gC kg?1) and lower (P < 0.001) bulk density (0.55 ± 0.01 Mg m?3) than the riverine ones (50.1 ± 6.9 gC kg?1 and 0.74 ± 0.06 Mg m?3). The soil carbon was 98–99% organic in the isolated depressional wetland communities and 85–98% organic in the riverine ones. The depressional wetland communities sequestered 317 ± 93 gC m?2 yr?1, more (P < 0.01) than the riverine communities that sequestered 140 ± 16 gC m?2 yr?1. The highest sequestration rate was found in the Quercus palustris forested wetland community (473 gC m?2 yr?1), while the wetland community dominated by water lotus (Nelumbo lutea) was the most efficient of the riverine communities, sequestering 160 gC m?2 yr?1. These differences in sequestration suggest the importance of addressing wetland types and communities in more detail when assessing the role of wetlands as carbon sequestering systems in global carbon budgets.  相似文献

To investigate the applicability of ecological engineering to pollution problems prevalent in present-day Central and Eastern Europe, a SCOPE-UNEP sponsored workshop was held in Estonia in November 1995. The workshop was undertaken specifically to obtain information from and to train planners, managers and scientists in the region. These ‘countries in transition' face, in many respects, unique environmental problems as a result of their recent domination by a centralized planning government system. Twenty workshop findings that resulted from workshop presentations and subsequent discussion are presented. Six papers published as part of this special issue of Ecological Engineering, and summarized here, deal with the general principles of mineland restoration, acidification effects and mitigation in Poland, reestablishment of riparian buffer strips in Estonia, recovery of forests in the Black Triangle of Czechoslovakia and Poland, restoration after 10 years near the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident in the Ukraine, and studies on remediation of contaminated soils in Belarus.  相似文献
