Chemical Detection of Microbial Prey by Bacterial Predators

A motile, predacious bacterium which degraded Pythium debaryanum was strongly attracted to substances released into the medium by the fungus. A nonpredacious bacterium was not attracted to these substances. The predator bacterium was specifically attracted to cellulose and its oligomers which are known to be components of the cell wall of Pythium. Ethanol inhibited chemotaxis of the bacterium without affecting either its motility or its ability to degrade cellulose. A second predacious bacterium was isolated for the alga, Skeletonema costatum. The role of chemoreception in the detection of microbial prey by bacterial predators in natural habitats is discussed.     

Genetic variation in the genus Bufo I. An extreme degree of transferrin and albumin polymorphism in a population of the American toad (Bufo americanus)

A population of Bufo americanus from southwestern Ohio exhibited an extreme degree of transferrin and albumin polymorphism. One hundred and eighty-five individuals were collected from this population, and their transferrin and albumin phenotypes were determined by vertical acrylamide gel electrophoresis. Thirteen transferrin alleles were present in 36 phenotypes, and 11 albumin alleles were present in 29 phenotypes. A deficiency of heterozygotes occurred at both protein loci. The possible mechanisms responsible for the polymorphism and deficiency of heterozygotes are discussed.This work was supported by grants from the following agencies to the Senior author: NSF GB23601, Society of the Sigma Xi, and the American Philosophical Society. van der Waals Forces between Cylinders: II. Retarded Interaction between Thin Isotropic Rods

We derive the retarded van der Waals interaction between two long thin parallel dielectric cylinders immersed in a solvent. The result shows that the ultraviolet interactions which may be responsible for the specificity of macromolecular interactions do not operate strongly over distances R ≥ 50 Å. For greater distances the contribution of these frequencies ξ is damped by a factor ∞ e^-ξR/c.     

An Analytical Model of the Counter-Current Heat Exchange Phenomena

An analytical model for the counter-current heat exchange mechanism in animals has been formulated and a solution has been obtained. The nondimensional parameters that govern the mechanism have been determined in terms of the properties of the animal. The normalized temperatures are functions of normalized distance and, in general, three nondimensional heat transfer conductances. Graphical results are presented for two representative physiological systems. These results allow a delineation of those situations in which counter-current heat transfer is important, and also a quantitative prediction of the heat transfer and temperature distributions. The theory is compared to the available experimental results.
