Abstract. The interdependence of species richness and plant biomass has widely been accepted as a general biodiversity rule. However, there is no information about how relationships are established during colonization and how total biomass is distributed among plants. The main objective of this study was to determine the role of several factors which we have hypothetized as affecting biomass distribution among species in an early old‐field community. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment in a deeply ploughed Agropyro‐Rumicion crispi community in the Basque Country (Spain). Light, water and soil nitrogen content were factorially manipulated resulting in eight experimental treatments. We also examined several site features, which could potentially influence final biomass distribution: seed bank composition, soil physico‐chemical heterogeneity and cover and density of the dominant plant species in the community. A partition hypothesis testing approach using Redundancy Analysis was conducted to determine the fraction of biomass distribution variability assigned to each treatment and site feature. The most important species, in terms of biomass, were Agropyron repens, Sinapis arvensis, Arrhenatherum bulbosum and Picris echioides. As a general conclusion, biomass distribution among species during early secondary succession primarily depends on light availability and nitrogen supply. Several soil variables, such as magnesium, calcium and clay contents, also explain a relevant fraction of the biomass distribution among plant species. On the contrary, we found no effect of seed bank composition on biomass distribution. Finally, the total species number and cover of dominant species such as Sinapis arvensis, may determine final biomass distribution.  相似文献

Voltage-dependent potassium (Kv) channels play a pivotal role in the modulation of macrophage physiology. Macrophages are professional antigen-presenting cells and produce inflammatory and immunoactive substances that modulate the immune response. Blockage of Kv channels by specific antagonists decreases macrophage cytokine production and inhibits proliferation. Numerous pharmacological agents exert their effects on specific target cells by modifying the activity of their plasma membrane ion channels. Investigation of the mechanisms involved in the regulation of potassium ion conduction is, therefore, essential to the understanding of potassium channel functions in the immune response to infection and inflammation. Here, we demonstrate that the biophysical properties of voltage-dependent K+ currents are modified upon activation or immunosuppression in macrophages. This regulation is in accordance with changes in the molecular characteristics of the heterotetrameric Kv1.3/Kv1.5 channels, which generate the main Kv in macrophages. An increase in K+ current amplitude in lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophages is characterized by a faster C-type inactivation, a greater percentage of cumulative inactivation, and a more effective margatoxin (MgTx) inhibition than control cells. These biophysical parameters are related to an increase in Kv1.3 subunits in the Kv1.3/Kv1.5 hybrid channel. In contrast, dexamethasone decreased the C-type inactivation, the cumulative inactivation, and the sensitivity to MgTx concomitantly with a decrease in Kv1.3 expression. Neither of these treatments apparently altered the expression of Kv1.5. Our results demonstrate that the immunomodulation of macrophages triggers molecular and biophysical consequences in Kv1.3/Kv1.5 hybrid channels by altering the subunit stoichiometry.  相似文献

Genes that encode glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchored proteins (GPI-APs) constitute an estimated 1-2% of eukaryote genomes. Current computational methods for the prediction of GPI-APs are sensitive and specific; however, the analysis of the processing site (omega- or omega-site) of GPI-APs is still challenging. Only 10% of the proteins that are annotated as GPI-APs have the omega-site experimentally verified. We describe an integrated computational and experimental proteomics approach for the identification and characterization of GPI-APs that provides the means to identify GPI-APs and the derived GPI-anchored peptides in LC-MS/MS data sets. The method takes advantage of sequence features of GPI-APs and the known core structure of the GPI-anchor. The first stage of the analysis encompasses LC-MS/MS based protein identification. The second stage involves prediction of the processing sites of the identified GPI-APs and prediction of the corresponding terminal tryptic peptides. The third stage calculates possible GPI structures on the peptides from stage two. The fourth stage calculates the scores by comparing the theoretical spectra of the predicted GPI-peptides against the observed MS/MS spectra. Automated identification of C-terminal GPI-peptides from porcine membrane dipeptidase, folate receptor and CD59 in complex LC-MS/MS data sets demonstrates the sensitivity and specificity of this integrated computational and experimental approach.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the aboveground vegetation in relation to the soil seed bank throughout a 60-year succession process following agricultural abandonment in a semi-arid Mediterranean gypsum habitat. There is little information regarding the relationship between these two community components in the context of succession on semi-arid gypsum soils. Aboveground vegetation and the corresponding seed bank of gypsum plant communities were sampled through a chronosequence of 24 abandoned fields. Generalized linear models were used to model seed species richness and density, redundancy analyses to model the effect of time since abandonment and the effect of soil physicochemical parameters on seed bank species composition, and Mantel tests to analyze resemblance between above- and belowground species composition. In this last case, the effect of time since abandonment was controlled using a partial Mantel test. Mantel correlograms using time intervals instead of distances were used to describe the resemblance of above- to belowground species occurrence in different aged fields. No significant variability in seed species richness, seed density, or species composition due to time since abandonment was found. Differences in seed species composition were mainly due to small spatial scale predictors such as slope and soil calcium content. High correlations between species composition in the soil seed bank and the aboveground vegetation were detected during succession. The lack of a significant trend in aboveground species replacement over time was also reflected in seed bank composition. We concluded that the rapid establishment of strict gypsophyte species relied mainly on the long-term persistence of these species in the seed bank.  相似文献

The land snail genus Tudorella shows a peculiar disjunct distribution around the western Mediterranean coasts. Despite high phenotypic plasticity, only two species with a disputed number of subspecific taxa are currently recognised. We delimited the species with mitochondrial (COI & 16S) and nuclear (ITS-1) markers based on the unified species concept and suggested that there are eight species in the genus, two of them currently undescribed. Applying Bayesian phylogenetic model selection, we tested four different biogeographic hypotheses that could be causal for the current distribution pattern of extant Tudorella species. A scenario involving vicariance events resulting from the repeated splits of the Tyrrhenian plate with subsequent dispersal events over land bridges during the Pliocene received greatest support in the data.  相似文献

Summary H-Y antigen expression was studied on leukocytes and gonad-derived fibroblasts from a patient affected by mixed gonadal dysgenesis. Blood leukocytes and fibroblasts derived from the testis were typed H-Y positive, but the fibroblasts derived from the streak gonad were H-Y negative. Although the patient's karyotype was a mosaic, 45,XO/46,X+mar, as detected in-peripheral blood cells and testis-derived fibroblasts, all the fibroblasts derived from the streak gonad were 45,XO. These data suggests that the marker chromosome was in fact a Y-derived chromosome. Moreover, they showed that, at the gonadal level, a minority of H-Y positive 46,X+mar cells were able to organize a testis. Nevertheless, a large number of XO cells probably did not receive the testicular forming influence of the H-Y antigen and of the other masculinizing factors.  相似文献
