2. | While gleaning, M. Evotis used short duration (mean ± SD = 0.66 ± 0.28 ms, Table 2), high frequency, FM calls (FM sweep = 80 – 37 kHz) of relatively low intensity (77.3 + 2.9, –4.2 dB SPL). Call peak frequency was 52.2 kHz with most of the energy above 50 kHz (Fig. 1). |
3. | Echolocation was not required for prey detection or capture as calls were emitted during only 50% of hovers and 59% of attacks. Using small palindromes to monitor meiotic double-strand-break-repair (DSBr) events, we demonstrate that two distinct classes of crossovers occur during meiosis in wild-type yeast. We found that crossovers accompanying 5:3 segregation of a palindrome show no conventional (i.e., positive) interference, while crossovers with 6:2 or normal 4:4 segregation for the same palindrome, in the same cross, do manifest interference. Our observations support the concept of a "non"-interference class and an interference class of meiotic double-strand-break-repair events, each with its own rules for mismatch repair of heteroduplexes. We further show that deletion of MSH4 reduces crossover tetrads with 6:2 or normal 4:4 segregation more than it does those with 5:3 segregation, consistent with Msh4p specifically promoting formation of crossovers in the interference class. Additionally, we present evidence that an ndj1 mutation causes a shift of noncrossovers to crossovers specifically within the "non"-interference class of DSBr events. We use these and other data in support of a model in which meiotic recombination occurs in two phases-one specializing in homolog pairing, the other in disjunction-and each producing both noncrossovers and crossovers. 相似文献

Squids are especially frequent as paratenic hosts of helminth parasites, particularly to those that have elasmobranchs and mammals as final hosts. Among those parasite species, anisakid nematode larvae and cestode plerocercoids are most effectively transferred through the trophic chain by oegopsid squids. A total of 439 short-finned squids, Illex coindetii (245 males, 190 females and 4 unsexed) were sampled in the central part of the eastern Adriatic Sea in order to assess their helminth component community and parasite dynamics with respect to host sex, maturity, seasonality, and feeding behavior. Two larval helminths were isolated, i.e., larvae of Anisakis pegreffii, characterized by molecular tools at the species level, and plerocercoids of Phyllobothrium sp., with prevalences of 30.5% and 2.3%, respectively. Highly significant seasonal variation in diet consumption, congruent with seasonal variation in anisakid intensity, was observed, underlining the tight role of squid prey in the trophic transmission of parasite. Likewise, the highest helminth prevalence and intensity of infection was recorded in autumn, when the fish prey, mostly Maurolicus muelleri, comprised the greatest proportion of diet. This helped to assign the Adriatic broadtail shortfin squid not as a first, but as a second, paratenic host for the anisakid, unlike as suggested previously. The presence of larval A. pegreffii confirms its previously reported zoogeographical distribution in the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. The presence of 2 helminths in I. coindetii describes the feeding patterns of the squid, as well as clearly defined and coevolved predator-prey relationships. 相似文献

A free-ranging maternity colony of big brown bats Eptesicus fuscus roosting in rock crevices along the South Saskatchewan River in south-eastern Alberta, Canada, was studied to understand better the discrepancy that exists in the literature regarding torpor use by reproductive female bats. Using radio-telemetry, thermoregulatory patterns and roost microclimate were recorded for pregnant, lactating and post-lactating females. Relative torpor use is described in several ways: the proportion of days on which torpor was used, depth, minimum body temperature, time spent in torpor, and a comprehensive torpor unit (degree-min). Pregnant and lactating female E. fuscus used torpor to the same extent overall (degree-min), but pregnant bats used torpor less frequently and with more time in deep torpor. Torpor was used to the greatest extent after weaning (post-lactation). Evidence is presented that the cost:benefit ratio for deep and prolonged periods of torpor may be highest during lactation. Microclimates of rock-crevice roosts mirrored the use of torpor throughout reproduction by bats. Lactation roosts (deeper, larger opening size) were more thermally stable and remained warmer at night compared to the shallow roosts used by pregnant and post-lactating females. It is shown that conclusions about relative use of torpor can differ depending on the units of comparison, necessitating measurement of all aspects of torpor (depth, duration and frequency). Comprehensive measurements, individual-based normothermic temperatures, and a definition of torpor that accounts for all energy savings, allow a more accurate depiction of patterns and facilitates inter-study comparisons. 相似文献

Summary Sperm chromosome complements were studied in three men who carried reciprocal translocations. A total of 400 sperm were karyotyped after in vitro penetration of hamster eggs: 217 sperm from t(2;9) (q21;p22), 164 from t(4;6) (q28;p23) and 19 from t(7;14) (q21;q13). All possible 22 and 31 meiotic segregations were observed for t(2;9) and t(4;6); for t(7;14) only 22 segregations were observed. For alternate segregations, the number of normal sperm was not significantly different from the number of sperm carrying a balanced form of the translocation in any of the translocations, as theoretically expected. The percentage of sperm with an unbalanced form of the translocation was 57% for t(2;9), 54% for t(4;6) and 47% for t(7;14). There was no evidence for an interchromosomal effect in any of the translocations since the frequencies of numerical abnormalities (unrelated to the translocation) were within the normal range of control donors. The frequencies of X- and Y-bearing sperm did not differ significantly from 50%. Results from a total of 17 reciprocal translocations studied by sperm chromosomal analysis were reviewed. 相似文献

Background
We address three key gaps in research on urban wildlife ecology: insufficient attention to (1) grassland biomes, (2) individual- and population-level effects, and (3) vertebrates other than birds. We hypothesized that urbanization in the North American Prairies, by increasing habitat complexity (via the proliferation of vertical structures such as trees and buildings), thereby enhancing the availability of day-roosts, tree cover, and insects, would benefit synanthropic bats, resulting in increased fitness among urban individuals.Methodology/Principal Findings
Over three years, we captured more than 1,600 little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) in urban and non-urban riparian sites in and around Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This species dominated bat assemblages throughout our study area, but nowhere more so than in the city. Our data did not support most of our specific predictions. Increased numbers of urban bats did not reflect urbanization-related benefits such as enhanced body condition, reproductive rates, or successful production of juveniles. Instead, bats did best in the transition zone situated between strictly urban and rural areas.Conclusions/Significance
We reject our hypothesis and explore various explanations. One possibility is that urban and rural M. lucifugus exhibit increased use of anthropogenic roosts, as opposed to natural ones, leading to larger maternity colonies and higher population densities and, in turn, increased competition for insect prey. Other possibilities include increased stress, disease transmission and/or impacts of noise on urban bats. Whatever the proximate cause, the combination of greater bat population density with decreased body condition and production of juveniles indicates that Calgary does not represent a population source for Prairie bats. We studied a highly synanthropic species in a system where it could reasonably be expected to respond positively to urbanization, but failed to observe any apparent benefits at the individual level, leading us to propose that urban development may be universally detrimental to bats. 相似文献37.

Humans reject uneven divisions of resources, even at personal cost. This is observed in countless experiments using the ultimatum game, where a proposer offers to divide a resource with a responder who either accepts the division or rejects it (whereupon both earn zero). Researchers debate why humans evolved a psychology that is so averse to inequity within partnerships. We suggest that the scale of competition is crucial: under local competition with few competitors, individuals reject low offers, because they cannot afford to be disadvantaged relative to competitors. If one competes against the broader population (i.e. global competition), then it pays to accept low offers to increase one''s absolute pay-off. We support this intuition with an illustrative game-theoretical model. We also conducted ultimatum games where participants received prizes based on pay-offs relative to immediate partners (local competition) versus a larger group (global competition). We describe a pipeline for the rapid production of recombinant Fabs derived from mouse monoclonal antibodies suitable for use in structural studies. The pipeline is exemplified by the production of three Fabs derived from the monoclonal antibodies OX108 (anti-CD200 receptor), OX117 and OX119 (anti-SIRPgamma). Heavy and light chain variable domains were inserted into separate expression vectors containing resident constant regions using In-Fusion PCR cloning. Following transient co-expression in HEK 293T cells, secreted Fab fragments were purified by metal chelate chromatography and gel filtration using an automated procedure with yields of up to 4mg/L of cell culture. Following crystallization trials, diffracting crystals were obtained for the recombinant Fabs of OX108 and OX117, and their structures solved to 2.3A and 2.4A, respectively. 相似文献
