Recent work has shown that animals frequently use social information from individuals of their own species as well as from other species; however, the ecological and evolutionary consequences of this social information use remain poorly understood. Additionally, information users may be selective in their social information use, deciding from whom and how to use information, but this has been overlooked in an interspecific context. In particular, the intentional decision to reject a behaviour observed via social information has received less attention, although recent work has indicated its presence in various taxa. Based on existing literature, we explore in which circumstances selective interspecific information use may lead to different ecological and coevolutionary outcomes between two species, such as explaining observed co-occurrences of putative competitors. The initial ecological differences and the balance between the costs of competition and the benefits of social information use potentially determine whether selection may lead to trait divergence, convergence or coevolutionary arms race between two species. We propose that selective social information use, including adoption and rejection of behaviours, may have far-reaching fitness consequences, potentially leading to community-level eco-evolutionary outcomes. We argue that these consequences of selective interspecific information use may be much more widespread than has thus far been considered. 相似文献

Mimosa pigra L. is a serious weed of wetlands of Australia, Asia and Africa. A suite of established biocontrol agents have been introduced in Australia and some Asian countries, but better control is needed. Nesaecrepida infuscata (Schaeffer) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a common insect on M. pigra in tropical America. The larvae develop on the roots while the adults feed on the leaves. As both roots and leaves of M. pigra are relatively undamaged in the introduced range, this species has potential to limit the growth, survival and seed production. Furthermore, it is abundant in the dry season and so inflicts damage when most other agents are not active. In host specificity tests, larvae did not develop on any of the 65 test plant species other than M. pigra. Adult feeding on test plant species other than M. pigra was minimal. Endothelial cells play a major role in immunologic reactions, in which cellular adhesion molecules P-selectin, ICAM-1, VCAM-1,
and ELAM-1 are important mediators in the recruitment of leukocytes in pulmonary inflammation. Selenium (Se) is known to modulate
immunological mechanisms of asthma. The aim of our investigation was to examine whether Se supplementation in cortico-dependent
asthmatic patients may modulate adhesion molecule expression in cultured endothelium. Our findings indicated that P-selectin,
VCAM-1, and ELAM-1 expression on human umbilical vein endothelial cells stimulated with peripheral blood mononuclear cells
obtained from asthmatics before supplementation with Se was significantly higher than from healthy donors (p < 0.05). The production of ICAM-1 showed only slight augmentation. The levels of VCAM-1 and ELAM-1 expression were significantly
decreased after 3 mo of Se supplementation (p < 0.05). After 6 mo of intervention period the intensity of P-selectin and ICAM-1 expression was also significantly reduced
(p < 0.05 andp < 0.01, respectively). The inhibitory effect of Se on the adhesion molecule expression was studied in cultured endothelial
cells after interferon-γ stimulation. Our data suggest that Se affects the expression of P-selectin, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and ELAM-1
in a dosedependent manner and the half-maximal inhibitory concentrations were 3.4, 0.5, 4, and 3.8 μg/mL, respectively. The
maximal inhibitions (greater than 80%) were observed in vitro with 10 μg/mL Se (p < 0.01). Regulation of adhesion molecule expression may be an important mechanism through which the inflammation may be controlled. 相似文献

Wnt signaling plays key roles in development and disease. The tumor suppressor adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) is an essential negative regulator of Wnt signaling. Its best-characterized role is as part of the destruction complex, targeting the Wnt effector β-catenin (βcat) for phosphorylation and ultimate destruction, but several studies suggested APC also may act in the nucleus at promoters of Wnt-responsive genes or to shuttle βcat out for destruction. Even in its role in the destruction complex, APC's mechanism of action remains mysterious. We have suggested APC positions the destruction complex at the appropriate subcellular location, facilitating βcat destruction. In this study, we directly tested APC's proposed roles in the nucleus or in precisely localizing the destruction complex by generating a series of APC2 variants to which we added tags relocalizing otherwise wild-type APC to different cytoplasmic locations. We tested these for function in human colon cancer cells and Drosophila embryos. Strikingly, all rescue Wnt regulation and down-regulate Wnt target genes in colon cancer cells, and most restore Wnt regulation in Drosophila embryos null for both fly APCs. These data suggest that APC2 does not have to shuttle into the nucleus or localize to a particular subcellular location to regulate Wnt signaling. 相似文献

For safe biosolid-land-applying, sludge should be contaminant-free. However, it may contain important amounts of micropollutants, not removed in the wastewater-treatment-processes. An alternative treatment with the fungus Trametes versicolor was applied in sterile solid-phase systems consisting of sludge and a lignocellulosic substrate. Fungal colonization and activity were demonstrated during the process, according to monitoring of ergosterol, laccase activity and the naproxen-degradation test (ND24). Fourteen out of 43 analyzed pharmaceuticals were found in the raw sludge. After treatment, phenazone, bezafibrate, fenofibrate, cimetidine, clarithromycin, sulfamethazine and atenolol were completely removed, while removals between 42% and 80% were obtained for the remaining pharmaceuticals. Toxicological analyses (Daphnia magna, Vibrio fischeri and seed germination) showed an important reduction in sludge toxicity after treatment. Results suggest that a solid-phase treatment with T. versicolor may reduce the ecotoxicological impact of micropollutants present in sewage sludge. This is the first report of a fungal-approach for elimination of emerging pollutants from biosolids. 相似文献

A comprehensive mutant population is a basic resource for exploring gene function. We developed an isogenic tomato 'mutation library' in the genetic background of the inbred variety M82. A total of 13 000 M(2) families, derived from EMS (ethyl methane sulfonate) and fast-neutron mutagenesis, were visually phenotyped in the field and categorized into a morphological catalog that includes 15 primary and 48 secondary categories. Currently, 3417 mutations have been cataloged; among them are most of the previously described phenotypes from the monogenic mutant collection of The Tomato Genetics Resource Center, and over a thousand new mutants, with multiple alleles per locus. The phenotypic database indicates that most mutations fall into more than a single category (pleiotropic), with some organs such as leaves more prone to alterations than others. The purpose of the present study was to identify kinetic responses to running on mediolaterally elevated (cross-sloped) running surfaces. Ground reaction forces (GRFs), GRF lever arms and joint moment characteristics of 19 male runners were analyzed when running at 3.5 m/s on a custom-made, tiltable runway. Tilt angles of 3° and 6° for medial and lateral elevation were analyzed using a 10 camera Vicon Nexus system and a force platform. The point of force application of the GRF showed a systematic shift in the order of 1–1.5 cm to either the lateral or medial aspect of the foot for lateral or medial inclinations, respectively. Consequently, the strongest significant effects of tilt orientation and level on joint kinetics and ground reaction force lever arms were identified at the ankle, knee and hip joint in the frontal plane of movement. External eversion moments at the ankle were significantly increased by 35% for 6° of lateral elevation and decreased by 16% for 6° of medial elevation. Altering the cross-slope of the running surface changed the pattern of ankle joint moments in the transversal plane. Effect sizes were on average larger for laterally elevated conditions, indicating a higher sensitivity of kinetic parameters to this kind of surface tilt. These alterations in joint kinetics should be considered in the choice of the running environment, especially for specific risk groups, like runners in rehabilitation processes. 相似文献

IntroductionDespite the advocacy that diet may be a significant contributor to cancer prevention, there is a lack of direct evidence from epidemiological and experimental studies to substantiate such claims. Experimental studies suggest that n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) from marine oils may reduce breast cancer risk, however, findings are equivocal. Thus, in this study, novel transgenic mouse models were employed to provide, for the first time, direct evidence for an anti-cancer role of n-3 PUFA in mammary tumorigenesis.Methodsfat-1 Mice, which are capable of endogenous n-3 PUFA synthesis, were bred with mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV)-neu(ndl)-YD5 mice, an aggressive breast cancer model. The resultant offspring, including novel hybrid progeny, were assessed for tumor onset, size and multiplicity as well as n-3 PUFA composition in mammary gland and tumor tissue. A complementary group of MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5 mice were fed n-3 PUFA in the diet.ResultsMice expressing MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5 and fat-1 displayed significant (P<.05) reductions in tumor volume (~30%) and multiplicity (~33%), as well as reduced n-6 PUFA and enriched n-3 PUFA in tumor phospholipids relative to MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5 control mice. The effect observed in hybrid progeny was similarly observed in n-3 PUFA diet fed mice.ConclusionUsing complementary genetic and conventional dietary approaches we provide, for the first time, unequivocal experimental evidence that n-3 PUFA is causally linked to tumor prevention. 相似文献
