Shoot apical meristem (SAM) of plants harbors stem cells capable of generating the aerial tissues including reproductive organs. Therefore, it is very important for plants to control SAM proliferation and its density as a survival strategy. The SAM is regulated by the dynamics of a specific gene network, such as the WUS-CLV interaction of A. thaliana. By using a mathematical model, we previously proposed six possible SAM patterns in terms of the manner and frequency of stem cell proliferation. Two of these SAM patterns are predicted to generate either dichotomous or axillary shoot branch. Dichotomous shoot branches caused by this mechanism are characteristic of the earliest vascular plants, such as Cooksonia and Rhynia, but are observed in only a small minority of plant species of the present day. On the other hand, axillary branches are observed in the majority of plant species and are induced by a different dynamics of the feedback regulation between auxin and the asymmetric distribution of PIN auxin efflux carriers. During evolution, some plants may have adopted this auxin-PIN system to more strictly control SAM proliferation. 相似文献

Background
Despite being expensive, the standard combination of pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN)- α and ribavirin used to treat chronic hepatitis C (CH) results in a moderate clearance rate and a plethora of side effects. This makes it necessary to predict patient outcome so as to improve the accuracy of treatment. Although the antiviral mechanism of genetically altered IL28B is unknown, IL28B polymorphism is considered a good predictor of IFN combination treatment outcome.Methodology
Using microarray, we quantified the expression profile of 237 IFN related genes in 87 CH liver biopsy specimens to clarify the relationship between IFN pathway and viral elimination, and to predict patients'' clinical outcome. In 72 out of 87 patients we also analyzed IL28B polymorphism (rs8099917).Principal Findings
Five IFN related-genes (IFI27, IFI 44, ISG15, MX1, and OAS1) had expression levels significantly higher in nonresponders (NR) than in normal liver (NL) and sustained virological responders (SVR); this high expression was also frequently seen in cases with the minor (TG or GG) IL28B genotype. The expression pattern of 31 IFN related-genes also differed significantly between NR and NL. We predicted drug response in NR with 86.1% accuracy by diagonal linear discriminant analysis (DLDA).Conclusion
IFN system dysregulation before treatment was associated with poor IFN therapy response. Determining IFN related-gene expression pattern based on patients'' response to combination therapy, allowed us to predict drug response with high accuracy. Our aim was to investigate the significance of neck circumference (NC) on the presence and severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome independent of visceral fat (VF) obesity. A total of 219 subjects with suspected OSA underwent a complete polysomnography (PSG) study, along with the measurement of NC, and total body fat (TF) and VF levels (VFLs) measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. We proposed NC divided by height (NC/H) as the simple index for height‐corrected NC in Japanese subjects. NC/H exhibited a significantly stronger correlation than NC per se with BMI (r = 0.781 vs. 0.675, P = 0.0178), TF (r = 0.531 vs. 0.156, P < 0.0001), and VF (r = 0.819 vs. 0.731, P = 0.0203), indicating that NC/H is a better indicator of visceral obesity than NC per se. Interestingly, despite the strong correlation between NC/H and VFL, VFL was significantly associated with the apnea‐hypopnea index (AHI) ≥5, ≥15, and ≥30, but not with ≥40 or ≥50, whereas NC/H was significantly associated with higher AHI values, i.e., AHI ≥50 but not with lower AHI value. Furthermore, multiple regression analyses revealed that VFL and NC/H were independently associated with the square root of AHI (AHI0.5) levels in obese and nonobese patients, respectively. In conclusion, NC is associated with the severity of OSA independently of visceral obesity, especially in nonobese patients. 相似文献

Antarctic krill embryos and larvae were experimentally exposed to 380 (control), 1000 and 2000 µatm pCO2 in order to assess the possible impact of ocean acidification on early development of krill. No significant effects were detected on embryonic development or larval behaviour at 1000 µatm pCO2; however, at 2000 µatm pCO2 development was disrupted before gastrulation in 90 per cent of embryos, and no larvae hatched successfully. Our model projections demonstrated that Southern Ocean sea water pCO2 could rise up to 1400 µatm in krill''s depth range under the IPCC IS92a scenario by the year 2100 (atmospheric pCO2 788 µatm). These results point out the urgent need for understanding the pCO2-response relationship for krill developmental and later stages, in order to predict the possible fate of this key species in the Southern Ocean. 相似文献

Background
This study evaluates the outcome and complications of decompressive cervical Laminectomy and lateral mass screw fixation in 110 cases treated for variable cervical spine pathologies that included; degenerative disease, trauma, neoplasms, metabolic-inflammatory disorders and congenital anomalies.Methods
A retrospective review of total 785 lateral mass screws were placed in patients ages 16-68 years (40 females and 70 males). All cases were performed with a polyaxial screw-rod construct and screws were placed by using Anderson-Sekhon trajectory. Most patients had 12-14-mm length and 3.5 mm diameter screws placed for subaxial and 28-30 for C1 lateral mass. Screw location was assessed by post operative plain x-ray and computed tomography can (CT), besides that; the facet joint, nerve root foramen and foramen transversarium violation were also appraised.Results
No patients experienced neural or vascular injury as a result of screw position. Only one patient needed screw repositioning. Six patients experienced superficial wound infection. Fifteen patients had pain around the shoulder of C5 distribution that subsided over the time. No patients developed screw pullouts or symptomatic adjacent segment disease within the period of follow up.Conclusion
decompressive cervical spine laminectomy and Lateral mass screw stabilization is a technique that can be used for a variety of cervical spine pathologies with safety and efficiency. 相似文献136.

Background
Our previous study has shown that prenatal exposure to X-ray irradiation causes cerebral hypo-perfusion during the postnatal development of central nervous system (CNS). However, the source of the hypo-perfusion and its impact on the CNS development remains unclear. The present study developed an automatic analysis method to determine the mean red blood cell (RBC) speed through single microvessels imaged with two-photon microscopy in the cerebral cortex of rats prenatally exposed to X-ray irradiation (1.5 Gy).Methodology/Principal Findings
We obtained a mean RBC speed (0.9±0.6 mm/sec) that ranged from 0.2 to 4.4 mm/sec from 121 vessels in the radiation-exposed rats, which was about 40% lower than that of normal rats that were not exposed. These results were then compared with the conventional method for monitoring microvascular perfusion using the arteriovenous transit time (AVTT) determined by tracking fluorescent markers. A significant increase in the AVTT was observed in the exposed rats (1.9±0.6 sec) as compared to the age-matched non-exposed rats (1.2±0.3 sec). The results indicate that parenchyma capillary blood velocity in the exposed rats was approximately 37% lower than in non-exposed rats.Conclusions/Significance
The algorithm presented is simple and robust relative to monitoring individual RBC speeds, which is superior in terms of noise tolerance and computation time. The demonstrative results show that the method developed in this study for determining the mean RBC speed in the spatial frequency domain was consistent with the conventional transit time method. 相似文献138.

Background
Adiponectin is shown to be inversely associated with development and progression of various cancers. We evaluated whether adiponectin level was associated with the prevalence and histological grade of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and liver fibrosis in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.Methods
A case-control study was conducted on 97 HCC patients (cases) and 97 patients (controls) matched for sex, Child-Pugh grade and platelet count in patients with HCV infection. The serum total and high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and examined in their association with the prevalence of HCC. In addition, the relationship between these adiponectin levels and body mass index (BMI), progression of liver fibrosis, and histological grade of HCC was also evaluated. Liver fibrosis was assessed using the aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index (APRI).Results
There were no significant differences in the serum total and HMW adiponectin levels between cases and controls. Moreover, there were no inverse associations between serum total and HMW adiponectin levels and BMI in both cases and controls. On the other hand, serum total and HMW adiponectin levels are positively correlated with APRI in both cases (r = 0.491, P<0.001 and r = 0.485, P<0.001, respectively) and controls (r = 0.482, P<0.001 and r = 0.476, P<0.001, respectively). Interestingly, lower serum total (OR 11.76, 95% CI: 2.97–46.66 [P<0.001]) and HMW (OR 10.24, CI: 2.80–37.40 [P<0.001] adiponectin levels were independent risk factors of worse histological grade of HCC.Conclusions
Our results suggested that serum total and HMW adiponectin levels were predictors of liver fibrosis, but not prevalence of HCC in patients with HCV infection. Moreover, low these adiponectin levels were significantly associated with worse histological grades. 相似文献139.

Immunolocalization of nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptors, TrkA and p75 in the reproductive organs of adult male rats was investigated. Sections of the testis, efferent duct, epididymis, deferent duct, seminal vesicle, coagulating gland and prostate of adult male rats were immunostained by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex methods (ABC). NGF was expressed in Leydig cells, primary spermatocytes and pachytene spermatocytes in the testis. TrkA only immunoreacted to elongate spermatids and p75 showed positive immunostaining in the Sertoli cells, Leydig cells, the pachytene spermatocytes and elongate spermatids. Immunoreactions for NGF and its two receptors were detected in epithelial cells of efferent duct, deferent duct and epididymis. In addition, immunoreactions for NGF and its two receptors were also observed in columnar secretory epithelium lines of the seminal vesicles, prostate and coagulating gland. Synopsis We describe a total of 25 anadromous Sakhalin taimen Hucho perryi collected on the coast of Sarufutsu, northern Hokkaido, Japan in June 1997 and 1999. We examined morphology, stomach contents
and growth of three anadromous taimen (one male and two females) in detail, which were preserved in good condition. The three
taimen were aged and one female still had some eggs retained in her abdomen. The stomach contents of the three taimen consisted
of sand lance Ammodytes personatus Girard and sculpin Triglops sp. On the basis of scale analyses, the growth rate of the three taimen was estimated by using the back-calculation method,
and the highest rates were observed at young ages. Guanine pigmentation was present at the base of the caudal fin of each
taimen and is considered as a potential morphological trait to differentiate anadromous from fluvial specimens. Another anadromous
taimen, of which some individuals had reared for more than 3 years in seawater are also reported. For the conservation of
