This review examines possible role of progesterone receptor (PR) and androgen receptor (AR) "cross-talk" in the expression of courtship behaviour in the ring dove (Streptopelia risoria). In doves, although androgen has been mostly associated with aggressive courtship behaviour and progesterone with the initiation of incubation, progesterone administration to courting birds terminates the aggressive component of courtship whilst having no effect on nesting behaviour. Recent results in doves have identified a high density of androgen receptor and progesterone receptor immunoreactivity (AR-ir and PR-ir) in the hypothalamus of both sexes in regions known to be directly involved in courtship and incubation behaviour. Nuclear AR-ir in courting birds is widespread throughout the brain. Nuclear PR-ir is only localized in discrete regions of the preoptic hypothalamus of both sexes. In the anterior and posterior hypothalamus of courting birds an increase number of AR-ir and PR-ir neurons colocalizes (70-90%) in the nucleus preopticus anterior (POA), nucleus preopticus medialis (POM), nucleus preopticus paraventricularis magnocellularis (PPM), nucleus hypothalami lateralis posterioris (PLH), and tuberal hypothalamus (Tu). A lower percentage of colocalization is seen in birds at other stages of the breeding cycle. The high percentage of AR-ir and PR-ir colocalization in the preoptic hypothalamus of courting doves supports previous reports involving progesterone acting in these brain regions to terminate the androgen-dependent aggressive courtship behaviour in male doves. The increase in PR-ir staining intensity in AR-ir neurons in courting birds suggests that this progesterone-dependent termination of aggressive courtship display in males occurs at the receptor level and may be orchestrated by central oestrogen.  相似文献

The effects of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) blockade on the vascular biology of human tumors are not known. Here we show here that a single infusion of the VEGF-specific antibody bevacizumab decreases tumor perfusion, vascular volume, microvascular density, interstitial fluid pressure and the number of viable, circulating endothelial and progenitor cells, and increases the fraction of vessels with pericyte coverage in rectal carcinoma patients. These data indicate that VEGF blockade has a direct and rapid antivascular effect in human tumors.  相似文献

The Y(Z)-tyrosine radical was trapped by freezing immediately after illumination in Ca(2+)-depleted Photosystem II (PS II) membranes and the pH-dependent characteristics of the radical were investigated using CW-EPR and pulsed ENDOR. The spectrum of the Y*(Z) radical trapped in the Y*(Z)S(1) state at pH 5.5 was cation-like as reported in Mn-depleted PS II (H. Mino et al., Spectrochim. Acta A 53 (1997) 1465-1483). By illuminating the PS II-retaining S(2) state, the Y*(Z) radical and a broad doublet signal formed in the g approximately 2 region were trapped concomitantly. The spectrum of the trapped Y*(Z) radical in the Y*(Z)S(2) state was cation-like at pH 5.5 but the pulsed ENDOR measurements reveals the involvement of the neutral Y*(Z) radical in the doublet signal. At pH 7.0, the resulting Y*(Z) signal was the mixture of the cation-like and neutral radical spectra, and considerably different from the neutral radical found in Mn-depleted PS II. pH-Dependent changes in the properties of the Y*(Z) radical are discussed in relation to the redox events occurring in Ca(2+)-depleted PS II.  相似文献

Doublet signal and singlet-like signal induced in Ca(2+)-depleted PS II were investigated by pulsed EPR in one-dimensionally oriented photosystem (PS) II membranes. The doublet signal showed marked angular dependent change in its spectrum in term of the applied magnetic field, indicating that the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction is mainly responsible for the doublet signal. The singlet-like signal also showed angular dependence, which was less pronounced than that of the doublet signal. The parameters of dipole and exchange interactions used to simulate the doublet signal indicate that the signal arises from a magnetically coupled organic radical pair. Angular dependence of the doublet signal indicates that the radius vector of the radical pair (r) and the normal of the thylakoid membrane is at an angle of 65 degrees. Pulsed ELDOR studies in the oriented membranes indicate that the vector (R) connecting the doublet-signal center with the Y(D)(*) radical and the plane of the thylakoid membrane are at an angle of 8 degrees. Furthermore, the angle between the projections of the R and r vectors on the plane of the thylakoid membrane was determined to be 64 degrees. The location of the doublet-signal species in PS II is discussed.  相似文献

Activated sludge processes with alternating anaerobic and aerobic conditions (the anaerobic-aerobic process) have been successfully used for enhanced biological phosphate removal (EBPR) from wastewater. It is known that polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria (PAB) play an essential role for EBPR in the anaerobic-aerobic process. The present paper reviews limited information available on the metabolism and the microbial community structure of EBPR, highlighting the microbial ecological selection of PAB in EBPR processes. Exposure of microorganisms to alternate carbon-rich anaerobic environments and carbon-poor aerobic environments in the anaerobic-aerobic process induces the key metabolic characteristics of PAB, which include organic substrate uptake followed by its conversion to stored polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and hydrolysis of intracellular polyphosphate accompanied by subsequent Pi release under anaerobic conditions. Intracellular glycogen is assumed to function as a regulator of the redox balance in the cell. Storage of glycogen is a key strategy for PAB to maintain the redox balance in the anaerobic uptake of various organic substrates, and hence to win in the microbial selection. Acinetobacter spp., Microlunatus phosphovorus, Lampropedia spp., and the Rhodocyclus group have been reported as candidates of PAB. PAB may not be composed of a few limited genospecies, but involve phylogenetically and taxonomically diverse groups of bacteria. To define microbial community structure of EBPR processes, it is needed to look more closely into the occurrence and behavior of each species of PAB in various EBPR processes mainly by molecular methods because many of PAB seem to be impossible to culture.  相似文献

Effects of adding monovalent alkali metal cations to Ca(2+)-depleted photosystem (PS)II membranes on the biochemical and spectroscopic properties of the oxygen-evolving complex were studied. The Ca(2+)-dependent oxygen evolution was competitively inhibited by K(+), Rb(+), and Cs(+), the ionic radii of which are larger than the radius of Ca(2+) but not inhibited significantly by Li(+) and Na(+), the ionic radii of which are smaller than that of Ca(2+). Ca(2+)-depleted membranes without metal cation supplementation showed normal S(2) multiline electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signal and an S(2)Q(A)(-) thermoluminescence (TL) band with a normal peak temperature after illumination under conditions for single turnover of PSII. Membranes supplemented with Li(+) or Na(+) showed properties similar to those of the Ca(2+)-depleted membranes, except for a small difference in the TL peak temperatures. The peak temperature of the TL band of membranes supplemented with K(+), Rb(+), or Cs(+) was elevated to approximately 38 degrees C which coincided with that of Y(D)(+)Q(A)(-) TL band, and no S(2) EPR signals were detected. The K(+)-induced high-temperature TL band and the S(2)Q(A)(-) TL band were interconvertible by the addition of K(+) or Ca(2+) in the dark. Both the Ca(2+)-depleted and the K(+)-substituted membranes showed the narrow EPR signal corresponding to the S(2)Y(Z)(+) state at g = 2 by illuminating the membranes under multiple turnover conditions. These results indicate that the ionic radii of the cations occupying Ca(2+)-binding site crucially affect the properties of the manganese cluster.  相似文献

AIMS: To isolate and characterize lytic-bacteriophages specific to Microlunatus phosphovorus, and prepare fluorescently labelled phages (FLPs) for the rapid detection of the host bacterium in activated sludge. METHODS AND RESULTS: Isolation of bacteriophages lytic to M. phosphovorus was attempted by applying supernatants of activated sludge processes on the lawn of M. phosphovorus JCM9379 for plaque formation. Thirteen bacteriophage isolates were obtained. The restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis distinguished them into two different bacteriophages designated as phiMP1 and phiMP2. They were found to possess double-stranded DNA and host specificity. Morphological observations were done by electron microscopy. The bacteriophage particles stained by SYBR Green I was shown to be applicable to detect their host bacterial cells mixed with activated sludge. CONCLUSIONS: Two M. phosphovorus-specific bacteriophages were isolated and classified as Siphoviridae. FLPs of them were prepared, and successfully applied to detect the host bacterium added into the activated sludge. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: At least some of bacteria in activated sludge are susceptible to their related bacteriophages. Bacteriophages lytic to activated sludge bacteria could be affecting the bacterial population in activated sludge. The FLPs could be used for the easy-rapid detection of their host bacterium in activated sludge.  相似文献

The racemic title host compound (1) formed homochiral inclusion crystals (conglomerate) of 1 with acetone, while heterochiral inclusion crystals (racemate) were obtained when complexed with ethyl acetate.
