Since publication of the first record of Eichhornia crassipes in Cameroon in 1997, the weed has become highly invasive in the Wouri River Basin. Between June and September 2014, a socio-economic survey using participatory and qualitative methods was undertaken in the riparian villages of the Wouri River Basin to assess the perception of respondents to the presence of water hyacinth. The survey revealed that water hyacinth was a significant threat to activities along the river, which included fishing, sand extraction and river transportation. The presence of water hyacinth mats reduced catch rates of several common fish species, river transportation by 75%, and significantly reduced the income for sand extraction. Cameroon employs manual clearing of water hyacinth; however, respondents indicated they would consider other control methods, provided they do not have any negative impacts.  相似文献

Rat hearts, extensively washed with cold 0.15 M NaCl solution, were perfused with 5 ml of 0.15 M NaCl containing 16 U of heparin and 10% glycerol to release endothelium-bound lipoprotein lipase. Approximately 100 mU of enzyme activity could be released from each heart (weighing about 1.7 g). Several hearts could be sequentially perfused with the same heparin solution to enrich it in lipase activity. When compared with other equally rapid and frequently used sources of rat lipoprotein lipase (such as heart acetone powder or postheparin plasma), our enzyme preparation had a much higher specific activity suggesting that a greater purification level had been already achieved in a single step. In addition, this lipoprotein lipase preparation contained only trace amounts of lipids, was stable for an hour at 37 degrees C and retained 75% of its activity after 10 days at 4 degrees C. The described procedure is a quick way to prepare a soluble, partially purified and relatively stable lipoprotein lipase that may be useful especially for the in vitro preparation of triacylglycerol-rich lipoprotein remnants.  相似文献

Plastic surgeons aim to correct velopharyngeal insufficiency manifest by hypernasal speech with a velopharyngoplasty. The functional outcome has been reported to be worse in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome than in patients without the syndrome. A possible explanation is the hypotonia that is often present as part of the syndrome. To confirm a myogenic component of the etiology of velopharyngeal insufficiency in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, specimens of the pharyngeal constrictor muscle were taken from children with and without the syndrome. Histologic properties were compared between the groups. Specimens from the two groups did not differ regarding the presence of increased perimysial or endomysial space, fiber grouping by size or type, internalized nuclei, the percentage type I fibers, or the diameters of type I and type II fibers. In conclusion, a myogenic component of the etiology of velopharyngeal insufficiency in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome could not be confirmed.  相似文献

Physiol. 82(2): 632-643, 1997.A canine model of unilobar papain-induced emphysema was used toexamine the extent to which differences in alveolar pressures(PA) would develop between anemphysematous right lower lobe (RLL) and normal left lower lobe (LLL)during forced vital capacity (FVC) deflation. RLL and LLLPA(PARLL and PALLL,respectively) were measured by the alveolar capsule technique. Duringforced deflation, PA and lobarflows were determined between 95 and 20% FVC. A choke point common toboth lower lobes was observed at >40% FVC. The results showed thatdeflation compliance (C) was altered for the RLL such that <90%lobar vital capacity, CRLL > CLLL, whereas >90% lobar vitalcapacity, CRLL < CLLL. At 95 and 90% FVC, theinitial RLL PA decline wasgreater than that for the LLL (P < 0.05). However, large differences inPA were prevented because of theeffect of interdependence of regional expiratory flow (IREF). IREFcaused a relative decrease in RLL flows and increase in LLL flows thatlimited PA differences. Between 80 and 50% FVC, as CRLL becamegreater than CLLL, and because ofthe initial effect of IREF,PARLL was~PALLL.At 40% FVC, without IREF, lobar differences inPA widened. These findings indicate that IREF may affect the dynamics of flow limitation inregional lung disease.
