To what extent has the style of song development among songbirds coevolved with other life history strategies? Among Cistothorus wrens in North America, it seems that sedentary or site-faithful habits of marsh wrens, C. palustris, favour song imitation, but seminomadic habits of sedge wrens, C. platensis, favour song improvisation, whereby each male generates a large but unique song repertoire. In this study, we tested whether more sedentary populations of sedge wrens in the Neotropics would imitate songs. At our primary study site near Cartago, Costa Rica, breeding birds were colour-banded during 1995 and 1996, and follow-up surveys revealed that the birds remained at this site the year round. Extensive tape recording and analysis of songs showed that males had large song repertoires (200-300+ songs), and that many songs were shared among neighbouring males. In addition, males only 27 km distant, at La Pastora, used different songs. Furthermore, matched countersinging, in which two males answer each other with identical song types, was recorded near Brasilia, in Brazil. The sharing of songs among permanent neighbours, microgeographical variation in song, and matched countersinging can be achieved only through song imitation, thus revealing a striking difference in the style of song development among different populations of the sedge wren. In the Neotropics, having predictable neighbours throughout life appears to have favoured song imitation, so that individuals can interact using a common, learned code typical of the local population; among more mobile populations in North America, however, individuals improvise large repertoires of species-typical songs, thereby enabling singing males to communicate with any individual, no matter what the population of origin. Strategies of song development must correlate with life history features, and further surveys are needed to make sense of the great diversity of singing behaviours among songbirds. Decreased bile secretion into the intestine has been associated with low plasma concentrations of essential fatty acids (EFA) in humans. We studied the mechanism behind this relationship by determining the status and absorption of the major dietary EFA, linoleic acid (LA), in control and 1-week bile-diverted rats. The absorption of LA was quantified by a balance method and by measuring plasma concentrations of [13C]LA after its intraduodenal administration. Absolute and relative concentrations of LA in plasma were decreased in bile-diverted rats (P<0.01 and P<0.001, respectively). Fecal excretion of LA was increased at least 20-fold in bile-diverted rats (0.72+/-0.11 vs. 0.03+/-0.00 mmol/day; P<0.0001). Due to increased chow ingestion by bile-diverted rats, net intestinal absorption of LA was similar between bile-diverted and control rats (1.96+/-0.14 vs. 1.91+/-0.07 mmol/day, respectively; P>0.05). After intraduodenal administration of [13C]LA, plasma concentrations were approximately 3-4-fold lower in bile-diverted rats for at least 6 h (P<0.001). Plasma concentrations of both [12C]arachidonic acid and [13C]arachidonic acid were increased in bile-diverted rats (P<0.05). We conclude that decreased plasma concentrations of LA in 1-week bile-diverted rats are not due to decreased net intestinal absorption of LA, but may be related to increased metabolism of LA.  相似文献

Speech-sound disorder (SSD) is a complex behavioral disorder characterized by speech-sound production errors associated with deficits in articulation, phonological processes, and cognitive linguistic processes. SSD is prevalent in childhood and is comorbid with disorders of language, spelling, and reading disability, or dyslexia. Previous research suggests that developmental problems in domains associated with speech and language acquisition place a child at risk for dyslexia. Recent genetic studies have identified several candidate regions for dyslexia, including one on chromosome 3 segregating in a large Finnish pedigree. To explore common genetic influences on SSD and reading, we examined linkage for several quantitative traits to markers in the pericentrometric region of chromosome 3 in 77 families ascertained through a child with SSD. The quantitative scores measured several processes underlying speech-sound production, including phonological memory, phonological representation, articulation, receptive and expressive vocabulary, and reading decoding and comprehension skills. Model-free linkage analysis was followed by identification of sib pairs with linkage and construction of core shared haplotypes. In our multipoint analyses, measures of phonological memory demonstrated the strongest linkage (marker D3S2465, P=5.6 x 10(-5), and marker D3S3716, P=6.8 x 10(-4)). Tests for single-word decoding also demonstrated linkage (real word reading: marker D3S2465, P=.004; nonsense word reading: marker D3S1595, P=.005). The minimum shared haplotype in sib pairs with similar trait values spans 4.9 cM and is bounded by markers D3S3049 and D3S3045. Our results suggest that domains common to SSD and dyslexia are pleiotropically influenced by a putative quantitative trait locus on chromosome 3.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Seseli farrenyi (Apiaceae), a very narrow endemic to Cape Creus (Catalonia, Spain), including flowering timing patterns, quantity and quality of pollination services (type and frequency of pollinators, pollen carryover, pollen deposition on stigmas and reproductive success measured as fruit set), and breeding system was studied. Given the decline of population size detected in the last twenty years, we also analyzed the effects of fragmentation on pollination mechanisms. Protandry along with strong synchrony of floral development within umbels and sequential inflorescence emission within individual stalks, produces sexual phase alternation that promotes a strong outcrossing despite its non-specific pollination system and its (at least partial) self-compatibility. This pronounced xenogamy is supported by results of the insect exclusion test, hand-pollination experiments, and high P/O ratio. S. farrenyi flowers received visits from at least 28 species of insects, including wasps, small bees, ants, flies, syrphid flies, beetles and stink bugs, with different pollen carry-overs. Heterospecific pollen on stigmas decreased notably during the season (50% to 2.5%), averaging 12%. In the small population the stigmatic pollen loads and seed set decreased, but there was no effect of pollinator visitation rates. It was more affected by the composition of pollinators and their efficiency. The wind had a considerable effect on the plant. Some conservation measures are proposed.  相似文献

Intermediate filaments have been isolated from rabbit intradural spinal nerve roots by the axonal flotation method. This method was modified to avoid exposure of axons to low ionic strength medium. The purified filaments are morphologically 75-80 percent pure. The gel electrophoretogram shows four major bands migrating at 200,000, 145,000, 68,000, and 60,000 daltons, respectively. A similar preparation from rabbit brain shows four major polypeptides with mol wt of 200,000 145,000, 68,000, and 51,000 daltons. These results indicate that the neurofilament is composed of a triplet of polypepetides with mol wt of 200,000, 145,000, and 68,000 daltons. The 51,000-dalton band that appears in brain filament preparations as the major polypeptide seems to be of glial origin. The significance of the 60,000- dalton band in the nerve root filament preparation is unclear at this time. Antibodies raised against two of the triplet proteins isolated from calf brain localize by immunofluorescence to neurons in central and peripheral nerve. On the other hand, an antibody to the 51,000-dalton polypeptide gives only glial staining in the brain, and very weak peripheral nerve staining. Prolonged exposure of axons to low ionic strength medium solubilizes almost all of the triplet polypeptides, leaving behind only the 51,000- dalton component. This would indicate that the neurofilament is soluble at low ionic strength, whereas the glial filament is not. These results indicate that neurofilaments and glial filaments are composed of different polypeptides and have different solubility characteristics.  相似文献

A human malignant continuous cell line, named NG97, was recently established in our laboratory. This cell line has been serially subcultured over 100 times in standard culture media presenting no sign of cell senescence. The NG97 cell line has a doubling time of about 24 h. Immunocytochemical analysis of glial markers demonstrated that cells are positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S-100 protein, and negative for vimentin. Under phase-contrast microscope, cultures of NG97 showed cells with variable morphological features, such as small rounded cells, fusiform cells (fibroblastic-like cells), and dendritic-like cells. However, at confluence just small rounded and fusiform cells can be observed. At scanning electron microscopy (SEM) small rounded cells showed heterogeneous microextentions, including blebs and filopodia. Dendritic-like cells were flat and presented extensive prolongations, making several contacts with small rounded cells, while fusiform cells presented their surfaces dominated by microvilli.  相似文献

Previous kinetic studies (Tolkovsky, A.M., Braun, S., and Levitzki, A. (1982) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S.A. 79, 213-222) and biochemical studies (Arad, H., Rosenbusch, J., and Levitzki, A. (1984) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 81, 6579-6583) from our laboratory suggest that Gs or alpha s remain associated with the catalytic subunit of adenylyl cyclase (C) throughout the activation cycle of adenylyl cyclase by hormone receptors. In this study we have purified GppNHp-activated bovine brain adenylyl cyclase over 3000-fold under mild solution conditions. We demonstrate that although the enzyme is permanently activated it retains the beta subunit when bound to a forskolin-agarose affinity column as long as it is not exposed to high salt concentrations. The stoichiometry of alpha s to beta to C is close to unity, suggesting that beta gamma subunits do not dissociate from Gs upon its activation. The complex gamma beta alpha s (GppNHp). C dissociates partially when migrating on a Superose 12 fast protein liquid chromatography molecular-seiving column. This partial dissociation probably results from the relatively diluted state of the enzyme at a high degree of purity. Prolonged ultracentrifugation of the complex also causes partial dissociation of the beta gamma subunits from alpha s (GppNHp). C. The apparent contradiction between the results reported here and the observation that beta gamma subunits inhibit cyclase activity when added to platelet membranes (Katada, T., Bokoch, G. M., Northrup, J. K., Ui, M., and Gilman, A. G. (1984a) J. Biol. Chem. 259, 3568-3577) is discussed. We suggest an alternative model to account for this inhibitory effect of added beta gamma subunits.  相似文献

A cytogenetic analysis of Anopheles mosquitoes in the Astrakhan region was carried out. Three species of Anopheles were identified. An. messeae lives everywhere and prevails in all of the areas of research, An. hyrcanus is found in the southwest of the region, and An. maculipennis in the northern part of the region. The populations of An. messeae show a high level of inversion polymorphism for the sex chromosome and the third autosome. A clear clinal trend of an increase in chromosomal rearrangements XL1, 3R1, and 3L1 and a decrease in the frequency of evolutionary source alternatives was revealed in laraval hemipopulations of the species from south to north.  相似文献
