Effects of Shortened Alkyl Chains on Solution‐Processable Small Molecules with Oxo‐Alkylated Nitrile End‐Capped Acceptors for High‐Performance Organic Solar Cells 下载免费PDF全文
Solution‐processable small molecules are significant for producing high‐performance bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (OSCs). Shortening alkyl chains, while ensuring proper miscibility with fullerene, enables modulation of molecular stacking, which is an effective method for improving device performance. Here, the design and synthesis of two solution‐processable small molecules based on a conjugated backbone with a novel end‐capped acceptor (oxo–alkylated nitrile) using octyl and hexyl chains attached to π–bridge, and octyl and pentyl chains attached to the acceptor is reported. Shortening the length of the widely used octyl chains improves self‐assembly and device performance. Differential scanning calorimetry and grazing incidence X‐ray diffraction results demonstrated that the molecule substituted by shorter chains shows tighter molecular stacking and higher crystallinity in the mixture with 6,6‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) and that the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the OSC is as high as 5.6% with an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.87 V, a current density (Jsc) of 9.94 mA cm‐2, and an impressive filled factor (FF) of 65% in optimized devices. Pluripotent stem cells are hugely attractive in the tissue engineering research field as they can self‐renew and be selectively differentiated into various cell types. For stem cell and tissue engineering research it is important to develop new, biocompatible scaffold materials and graphene has emerged as a promising material in this area as it does not compromise cell proliferation and accelerates specific cell differentiation. Previous studies have shown a non‐invasive optical technique for mouse embryonic stem (mES) cell differentiation and transfection using femtosecond (fs) laser pulses. To investigate cellular responses to the influence of graphene and laser irradiation, here we present for the first time a study of mES cell fs laser transfection on graphene coated substrates. First we studied the impact of graphene on Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO‐K1) cell viability and cell cytotoxicity in the absence of laser exposure. These were tested via evaluating the mitochondrial activity through adenosine triphosphates (ATP) luminescence and breakages on the cell plasma membrane assessed using cytosolic lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) screening. Secondly, the effects of fs laser irradiation on cell viability and cytotoxicity at 1064 and 532 nm for cells plated and grown on graphene and pure glass were assessed. Finally, optical transfection of CHO‐K1 and mES cells was performed on graphene coated versus plain glass substrates. Our results show graphene stimulated cell viability whilst triggering a mild release of intracellular LDH. We also observed that compared to pure glass substrates; laser irradiation at 1064 nm on graphene plates was less cytotoxic. Finally, in mES cells efficient optical transfection at 1064 (82%) and 532 (25%) nm was obtained due to the presence of a graphene support as compared to pristine glass. Here we hypothesize an up‐regulation of cell adhesion promoting peptides or laminin‐related receptors of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in cell samples grown and irradiated on graphene substrates. Background
Intercropping systems could increase crop diversity and avoid vulnerability to biotic stresses. Most studies have shown that intercropping can provide relief to crops against wind-dispersed pathogens. However, there was limited data on how the practice of intercropping help crops against soil-borne Phytophthora disease.Principal Findings
Compared to pepper monoculture, a large scale intercropping study of maize grown between pepper rows reduced disease levels of the soil-borne pepper Phytophthora blight. These reduced disease levels of Phytophthora in the intercropping system were correlated with the ability of maize plants to form a “root wall” that restricted the movement of Phytophthora capsici across rows. Experimentally, it was found that maize roots attracted the zoospores of P. capsici and then inhibited their growth. When maize plants were grown in close proximity to each other, the roots produced and secreted larger quantities of 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (DIMBOA) and 6-methoxy-2-benzoxazolinone (MBOA). Furthermore, MBOA, benzothiazole (BZO), and 2-(methylthio)-benzothiazole (MBZO) were identified in root exudates of maize and showed antimicrobial activity against P. capsici.Conclusions
Maize could form a “root wall” to restrict the spread of P. capsici across rows in maize and pepper intercropping systems. Antimicrobe compounds secreted by maize root were one of the factors that resulted in the inhibition of P. capsici. Alterations of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) have been associated with the risk of a number of human cancers; however, the relationship between mtDNA copy number in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) and the risk of prostate cancer (PCa) has not been investigated. In a case-control study of 196 PCa patients and 196 age-paired healthy controls in a Chinese Han population, the association between mtDNA copy number in PBLs and PCa risk was evaluated. The relative mtDNA copy number was measured using quantitative real-time PCR; samples from three cases and two controls could not be assayed, leaving 193 cases and 194 controls for analysis. PCa patients had significantly higher mtDNA copy numbers than controls (medians 0.91 and 0.82, respectively; P<0.001). Dichotomized at the median value of mtDNA copy number in the controls, high mtDNA copy number was significantly associated with an increased risk of PCa (adjusted odds ratio = 1.85, 95% confidence interval: 1.21–2.83). A significant dose-response relationship was observed between mtDNA copy number and risk of PCa in quartile analysis (Ptrend = 0.011). Clinicopathological analysis showed that high mtDNA copy numbers in PCa patients were significantly associated with high Gleason score and advanced tumor stage, but not serum prostate-specific antigen level (P = 0.002, 0.012 and 0.544, respectively). These findings of the present study indicate that increased mtDNA copy number in PBLs is significantly associated with an increased risk of PCa and may be a reflection of tumor burden. 相似文献

This paper presents a fully enclosed duck‐shaped triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for effectively scavenging energy from random and low‐frequency water waves. The design of the TENG incorporates the freestanding rolling mode and the pitch motion of a duck‐shaped structure generated by incident waves. By investigating the material and structural features, a unit of the TENG device is successfully designed. Furthermore, a hybrid system is constructed using three units of the TENG device. The hybrid system achieves an instantaneous peak current of 65.5 µA with an instantaneous output power density of up to 1.366 W m?2. Following the design, a fluid–solid interaction analysis is carried out on one duck‐shaped TENG to understand the dynamic behavior, mechanical efficiency, and stability of the device under various water wave conditions. In addition, the hybrid system is experimentally tested to enable a commercial wireless temperature sensor node. In summary, the unique duck‐shaped TENG shows a simple, cost‐effective, environmentally friendly, light‐weight, and highly stable system. The newly designed TENG is promising for building a network of generators to harvest existing blue energy in oceans, lakes, and rivers. 相似文献

The importance of plant–soil feedback (PSF) has long been recognized, but the current knowledge on PSF patterns and the related mechanisms mainly stems from laboratory experiments. We aimed at addressing PSF effects on community performance and their determinants using an invasive forb Solidago canadensis. To do so, we surveyed 81 pairs of invaded versus uninvaded plots, collected soil samples from these pairwise plots, and performed an experiment with microcosm plant communities. The magnitudes of conditioning soil abiotic properties and soil biotic properties by S. canadensis were similar, but the direction was opposite; altered abiotic and biotic properties influenced the production of subsequent S. canadensis communities and its abundance similarly. These processes shaped neutral S. canadensis–soil feedback effects at the community level. Additionally, the relative dominance of S. canadensis increased with its ability of competitive suppression in the absence and presence of S. canadensis–soil feedbacks, and S. canadensis‐induced decreases in native plant species did not alter soil properties directly. These findings provide a basis for understanding PSF effects and the related mechanisms in the field conditions and also highlight the importance of considering PSFs holistically. 相似文献

A workflow of massive identification and application of intron markers using snakes as a model 下载免费PDF全文
Relative to the commonly used mitochondrial and nuclear protein‐coding genes, the noncoding intron sequences are a promising source of informative markers that have the potential to resolve difficult phylogenetic nodes such as rapid radiations and recent divergences. Yet many issues exist in the use of intron markers, which prevent their extensive application as conventional markers. We used the diverse group of snakes as an example to try paving the way for massive identification and application of intron markers. We performed a series of bioinformatics screenings which identified appropriate introns between single‐copy and conserved exons from two snake genomes, adding particular constraints on sequence length variability and sequence variability. A total of 1,273 candidate intron loci were retrieved. Primers for nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were designed for over a hundred candidates and tested in 16 snake representatives. 96 intron markers were developed that could be amplified across a broad range of snake taxa with high PCR successful rates. The markers were then applied to 49 snake samples. The large number of amplicons was subjected to next‐generation sequencing (NGS). An analytic strategy was developed to accurately recover the amplicon sequences, and approximately, 76% of the marker sequences were recovered. The average p‐distances of the intron markers at interfamily, intergenus, interspecies, and intraspecies levels were .168, .052, .015, and .004, respectively, suggesting that they were useful to study snake relationships of different evolutionary depths. A snake phylogeny was constructed with the intron markers, which produced concordant results with robust support at both interfamily and intragenus levels. The intron markers provide a convenient way to explore the signals in the noncoding regions to address the controversies on the snake tree. Our improved strategy of genome screening is effective and can be applied to other animal groups. NGS coupled with appropriate sequence processing can greatly facilitate the extensive application of molecular markers. 相似文献

DNA-binding proteins are crucial for various cellular processes and hence have become an important target for both basic research and drug development. With the avalanche of protein sequences generated in the postgenomic age, it is highly desired to establish an automated method for rapidly and accurately identifying DNA-binding proteins based on their sequence information alone. Owing to the fact that all biological species have developed beginning from a very limited number of ancestral species, it is important to take into account the evolutionary information in developing such a high-throughput tool. In view of this, a new predictor was proposed by incorporating the evolutionary information into the general form of pseudo amino acid composition via the top-n-gram approach. It was observed by comparing the new predictor with the existing methods via both jackknife test and independent data-set test that the new predictor outperformed its counterparts. It is anticipated that the new predictor may become a useful vehicle for identifying DNA-binding proteins. It has not escaped our notice that the novel approach to extract evolutionary information into the formulation of statistical samples can be used to identify many other protein attributes as well. 相似文献
