Styles of verbal expression of emotional and physical experiences: A study of depressed patients and normal controls in China

Sixty depressed patients and 52 normal controls completed three selfreport inventories: the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and a new Verbal Style Investigation Schedule (VESIS) developed by the first author. The VESIS uses 16 key emotional and physical terms from Western inventories and identified the words and phrases most commonly used by Chinese patients to express these feeling states. Chinese subjects commonly used the key term itself for only 3 or the 16 key terms; they usually preferred to use other words or phrases to express the feeling state. We categorized these Chinese expressions into four styles of verbal expression: Psychological, Somatic, Neutral (i.e., a mixture of psychological and somatic) and Deficient (i.e., lack of expression because of denial or suppression). Three of the 12 key emotional terms of the VESIS (depressed, fearful, and anxiousness) were more commonly expressed in a somatic or neutral mode than the other key emotional terms. The key terms suicidal interest and being punished were more commonly expressed in a deficient style than other key emotional terms. The somatic factor score of the SCL-90 was not correlated with increased somatic expression of emotional states; thus patients who have multiple somatic complaints are not more likely to express emotions somatically. The hypothesis of somatization is discussed in light of this study.     

Interferon affects intracellular calmodulin levels

Interferon lowers calmodulin levels in two cell lines sensitive to its antiproliferative effect. Further, in synchronized cells, interferon strongly inhibits the increase in calmodulin observed when control cells enter the S phase, and concomitantly inhibits DNA synthesis. Calmodulin has been implicated in the control of cell proliferation and an increase in this protein seems to be necessary for the progression of cells into the S phase of the cell cycle. Therefore, the effect of interferon on calmodulin content might constitute part of the molecular mechanism by which interferon inhibits DNA synthesis.     

大黄蒽醌衍生物与环核苷酸磷酸二酯酶、钙调素相互作用的研究

大黄蒽醌衍生物是中药大黄的主要成份。该类衍生物与钙调素(calmo-dulin,CaM)依赖的磷酸二酯酶(PDE)的相互作用表明:它们可作用子钙调素。其中,大黄酸结合CaM并抑制CaM依赖的磷酸二酯酶(CaM-PDE);而大黄素、大黄酚和芦荟大黄素既刺激CaM-PDE的活力,又刺激PDE的基础活力,其作用机制尚待阐明;当有Ca~(2+)或无Ca~(2+)条件下测定时,大黄酸对PDE基础活力均无影响。表明:象其它的CaM拮抗剂一样,大黄酸能抑制钙调素依赖的PDE的活力。     

In vitro capacitation and fertilizing ability of ejaculated rabbit sperm treated with lysophosphatidylcholine

Four experiments were replicated 1) to establish dose-response relationships between lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), sperm motility, and the acrosome reaction (AR), 2) to evaluate the influence of rabbit serum (RS) on these endpoints, 3) to compare buck differences in induction of the AR, and 4) to examine fertilizing ability in vitro of sperm tested under the first three objectives. Semen was collected from Dutch-belted rabbits, washed once by centrifugation, resuspended, and preincubated for 2 or 4 hr in a chemically defined medium (DM), DM plus 20% RS, or BSA-free DM plus 20% RS at 37°C. At the end of preincubation LPC was added to the preincubated sperm at concentrations of from 0 to 100 μg/ml. Sperm were examined .5–4 hr later for AR and sperm motility. For in vitro fertilization, sperm and ova were coincubated in DM up to 24 hr after insemination and in a more complex medium for another 24 hr. Addition of LPC to 4-hr-preincubated sperm was more effective for inducing the AR than addition to 2-hr-preincubated sperm. A significant increase (P < .05) in the AR occurred in 15 and 30 min following exposure to 100 and 80 μg of LPC per ml, respectively, but the higher concentration of LPC decreased sperm motility. Addition of 20% RS to DM with or without BSA surprisingly inhibited the AR but maintained sperm motility, as expected. Bucks differed (P < .05) in the initial percentage and the induced percentage of AR sperm. For the AR the optimal concentration of LPC per ml was 80 μg, but for in vitro fertilization 60 μg tended to be superior.     

聚乙二醇处理大豆种子子叶中几种酶活性和可溶性蛋白含量的变化

聚乙二醇处理的大豆种子的异柠檬酸裂解酶、苹果酸脱氢酶、过氧化氢酶、超氧物歧化酶、酸性磷酸酶、碱性磷酸酶的活性明显高于受低温吸胀冷害的种子子叶的活性,相关的酶活性协同地增长,而蛋白质的含量没有明显的变化。这些酶活性的提高可能是渗透调控处理对细胞膜系统修补的结果。     

小鼠精母细胞联会复合体RNA组分的电镜研究

本文运用常规染色和Bernhard染色方法对切片标本中小鼠粗线期精母细胞联会复合体(SC)的超微结构和电镜细胞化学特点进行了研究。经常规染色后,可见SC由侧生组分(LE)、中央组分(CE)和L-C纤维组成;SC宽约210nm,LE宽约60nm,中央间隔区宽约90nm。在Bernhard染色标本中,SC的LE、CE和L-C纤维着色较深,说明其中含有RNA;SC各结构组分的宽度和形态特点与常规染色标本中的基本一致。本文讨论了SC中存在有RNA等问题。     

受白粉菌诱导大麦抗感等基因系蛋白质变化的双向电泳分析

分别对接种与否的大麦抗—感白粉病等基因系—叶期幼苗取材进行蛋白质双向电泳分析。结果表明,病原的侵入使抗—感两系在30Kd以下的低分子量区域的蛋白质发生了明显变化。接种48小时之后,抗病系在pH5.5、6.0、6.8及8.8附近出现了对照中所没有的蛋白质,而在pH6.0和8.8附近的蛋白质则较对照有减小的趋势;感病系在pH6.0附近蛋白质明显增多,在pH8.8处不仅在量上有大幅度提高,而且种类也有增加。结果还表明,抗—感系间在未接种的情况下双向电泳图谱也有差异,接种之后由于感病系在pH8.8处蛋白质的特异性合成,使抗—感两系间的差异缩小。
