Our aim is to identify ecomorphological adaptations in the skull shape of the South American howler monkeys (species of the genus Alouatta, Lacépède, 1799, Primates, Atelidae). Since Alouatta is relatively homogenous in feeding ecology, we expect skull shape variation to be relatively conservative across species. We used geometric morphometrics to quantify craniodental morphology in six species of Alouatta. Multivariate regression, two-block Partial Least Squares, and variation partitioning were used to test for the impact of taxonomy, sexual dimorphism, allometry, geography and climate on skull shape. We found morphological overlap among species and sexes, although some discrimination occurs between species living in seasonal environments as opposed to rain forest species. There was a negative latitudinal gradient in skull size across species, with size explaining 34% of total shape variance. Latitude and climate, though important, were secondary in explaining shape variance. Amazonian Alouatta are larger, have thinner molars, wide incisors, and proportionally larger neurocranium. Overall, the shape of southern species seem well adapted to cope with proportionally tougher food items, whereas Amazonian species seem better equipped to deal with a diet richer in fruits, as confirmed by independent field observations. The small size of Alouatta in the South is possibly linked to the effect of competition with the larger folivorous atelid Brachyteles.  相似文献

The fine structure of the nuclei of synchronously growing cell population of Amoeba proteus was studied at I-h intervals during the interphase. This study showed that the nuclear helices undergo increases in their number at certain stages during interphase. This study explores the in vitro modulation of the lipid-filled phenotype of the lipid interstitial cell (LIC) isolated from the developing rat lung. Isolated LIC lose their cytoplasmic lipid droplets when cultured in fetal bovine serum (FBS) but retain their potential for lipid storage, since they rapidly reaccumulate lipid when subcultured in neonatal rat serum (NRS) and to a lesser extent in adult rat serum (ARS). The return of LIC to a lipid-filled state may not represent cell differentiation, since it occurs in the presence of bromodeoxyuridine. NRS contains twice the free fatty acids (FFA) of FBS and ARS, and doubling the FFA concentration of FBS and ARS increases LIC storage lipids. Serum triglyceride (TG) is 10 times higher in ARS and 23 times higher in NRS than in FBS. Since LIC lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity is in the range of 3T3-L1 adipocytes (0.56 vs. 1.72 units/mg DNA), the LIC has the potential of incorporating serum lipoprotein-triglyceride. The LPL activity of LIC is 9-12 times that of fetal and adult rat lung fibroblasts and 50 times that of human lung, trachea, or skin fibroblasts; LIC are probably a source of endothelial LPL in the developing lung. The response of LIC and ARLF cyclic-AMP to hormones known to influence lipid synthesis or degradation showed that: only LIC responded to glucagon; prostaglandin E1 was a more potent stimulus to LIC; isoproterenol was a more potent stimulus to ARLF; and neither cell responded to ACTH. The unique nature of LIC tends to support further the concept of fibroblast heterogeneity within tissues.  相似文献

Light- and electron-microscope autoradiography have been used to follow the incorporation of [3H]thymidine at different stages during the interphase of synchronously growing populations of Amoeba proteus. Two main patterns were found for tritiated thymidine incorporation, i.e. DNA synthesis. The major incorporation was in the central region of the nucleus, but a lesser degree of incorporation occurred in the nucleolar region. The bulk of this nucleolar DNA was found to be late replicating, i.e. it replicated during the G2 phase.  相似文献

We have studied the role of Glc6Pase mRNA abundance in the time course of Glc6Pase activity in liver and kidney during long-term fasting in rat. Refered to the mRNA level in the fed state, Glc6Pase mRNA abundance was increased by 3.5 ± 0.5 and 3.7 ± 0.5 times (mean ± S.E.M., n = 5) in the 24 h and 48 h-fasted liver, respectively. Then, the liver Glc6Pase mRNA was decreased to the level of the fed liver after 72 and 96 h of fasting (1.0 ± 0.3 and 1.4 ± 0.3). In the kidney, Glc6Pase mRNA abundance was increased by 2.7 ± 1.0 and 5 ± 1.2 times at 24 and 48 h of fasting, respectively. Then, it plateaued at the level of the 48 h fasted kidney after 72 h and 96 h of fasting (4.5 ± 1.0 and 4.3 ± 1.0). After 24 and 48 h-refeeding, the abundance of Glc6Pase mRNA in 48 h-fasted rats was decreased to the level found in the liver and kidney of fed rats. The time course of the activity of Glc6Pase catalytic subunit during fasting and refeeding was strikingly parallel to the time course of Glc6Pase mRNA level in respective tissues. Radiation damping of surface plasmon oscillations in metallic nanoparticles is proportional to their volume. For relatively large particles, this canal dominates the other mechanisms of relaxation and becomes the main limiting factor for spectral sensitivity of nanoparticles. In this communication, we consider metallic nanoshell with the dielectric core and calculate the radiation damping rate of surface plasmon oscillations, depending on the geometry and dielectric constants of the surrounding environment and the core. It is shown that surface plasmon radiation damping in nanoshell is suppressed by several orders of magnitude as compared to the solid particle of the same outer radius. This effect is conditioned by strong redshift of surface plasmon frequencies with the decrease of shell thickness. It is also demonstrated that the radiation damping rate of core–shell particle is highly sensitive with respect to the refractive index of surrounding media.  相似文献

Aim Optimal body size theories predict that large clades have a single, optimal, body size that serves as an evolutionary attractor, with the full body size spectrum of a clade resulting from interspecific competition. Because interspecific competition is believed to be reduced on islands, such theories predict that insular animals should be closer to the optimal size than mainland animals. We test the resulting prediction that insular clade members should therefore have narrower body size ranges than their mainland relatives. Location World‐wide. Methods We used body sizes and a phylogenetic tree of 4004 mammal species, including more than 200 species that went extinct since the last ice age. We tested, in a phylogenetically explicit framework, whether insular taxa converge on an optimal size and whether insular clades have narrow size ranges. Results We found no support for any of the predictions of the optimal size theory. No specific size serves as an evolutionary attractor. We did find consistent evidence that large (> 10 kg) mammals grow smaller on islands. Smaller species, however, show no consistent tendency to either dwarf or grow larger on islands. Size ranges of insular taxa are not narrower than expected by chance given the number of species in their clades, nor are they narrower than the size ranges of their mainland sister clades – despite insular clade members showing strong phylogenetic clustering. Main conclusions The concept of a single optimal body size is not supported by the data that were thought most likely to show it. We reject the notion that inclusive clades evolve towards a body‐plan‐specific optimum.  相似文献

Alcohol dehydrogenase, EC 1.1.1.1 (ADH), from the thermophilic archaebacterium Sulfolobus solfataricus (SsADH) is a strictly NAD+-dependent enzyme with an amino acid sequence related to those of horse liver, yeast and Thermoanaerobium brockii ADHs. This enzyme is remarkably thermophilic and thermostable; protein stability is strictly dependent on the presence of structural zinc in the molecule. For its broad substrate specificity, product stereoselectivity and acceptance of NAD+-macromolecular derivatives, SsADH appears suitable for laboratory-scale chemoselective synthesis. Moreover, it represents a useful protein model for studying the structure-function-stability relationships in thermophilic enzymes.  相似文献

The rate of increase in species number with sampled area is one issue of major interest in ecology. Species number increases with sampled time as well, though this kind of analysis is much rarer in literature. Species-area and species-time relationships have been recently integrated in a single model, which allows studying how time and area interact with each other in determining the cumulative increase in species richness. Here we studied species-area, species-time, and species-time-area relationships in Plio-Holocene large mammals of Western Eurasia, by using an extensive database including 184 species distributed in 685 fossil sites. We found that the increase of species number with time is much higher than with area. When sampling inequality of fossil localities in time and space is accounted for, time and area interact with each other in a negative, though non-linear fashion. The intense climatic changes that characterized the Plio-Holocene period apparently affected both species-area and species-time relationships in large mammals, by increasing the slope of the former during the Pliocene and middle Pleistocene, and of the latter during younger, climatically harsher, late Pleistocene times. This study emphasizes the importance of accounting for time and space in tracing paleodiversity curves.  相似文献
