Craniometric data of nine characters from 260 skulls of Oryctolagus cuniculus from western Europe and northern Africa were gathered to examine phenotypic variation in size, using both univariate and multivariate analyses. Although animals from the northern part of Europe were found to be larger than those from southern Europe, variation in size occurred in a continuous cline. Skull size was positively correlated with latitude and negatively correlated with ambient temperature. On the basis of skull morphology, there is no evidence for separation of O. cuniculus into the two or more subspecies commonly described. Further data, particularly from genetic material, are required to clarify the taxonomic status of the rabbit in Europe.  相似文献

We analyzed the susceptibility of Arabidopsis mutants with defects in salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA)/ethylene (ET) signaling to infection by Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV). Mutants cpr1-1 and cpr5-2, in which SA-dependent defense signaling is activated constitutively, were substantially more resistant than the wild type to systemic infection, implicating SA signaling in defense against CaMV. However, SA-deficient NahG, sid2-2, eds5-1, and pad4-1 did not show enhanced susceptibility. A cpr5 eds5 double mutant also was resistant, suggesting that resistance in cpr5 may function partially independently of SA. Treatment of cpr5 and cpr5 eds5, but not cpr1, with salicyl-hydroxamic acid, an inhibitor of alternative oxidase, partially restored susceptibility to wild-type levels. Mutants etr1-1, etr1-3, and ein2-1, and two mutants with lesions in ET/JA-mediated defense, eds4 and eds8, also showed reduced virus susceptibility, demonstrating that ET-dependent responses also play a role in susceptibility. We used a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-expressing CaMV recombinant to monitor virus movement. In mutants with reduced susceptibility, cpr1-1, cpr5-2, and etr1-1, CaMV-GFP formed local lesions similar to the wild type, but systemic spread was almost completely absent in cpr1 and cpr5 and was substantially reduced in etr1-1. Thus, mutations with enhanced systemic acquired resistance or compromised ET signaling show diminished long-distance virus movement.  相似文献

BackgroundMentorship in medical education is important for students’ professional development career planning. Orthopedic Surgery Interest Groups (OSIG) exist as formal organizations and serve as a conduit for undergraduate mentorship, though the role of mentorship via OSIGs within orthopedic medicine has not been thoroughly evaluated. Similarly, OSIGs within institutions are not standardized nor well defined. We sought to answer: (1) What offerings does OSIG provide for students interested in orthopaedic surgery? (2) How does OSIG involvement impact the orthopaedic surgery residency applicant? (3) Does OSIG involvement increase match rates for orthopaedic surgery residency applicants?MethodsAn online survey was distributed to faculty advisors at all allopathic US medical schools with available contact information. Results were analyzed using SPSS.ResultsOf the 28 respondent organizations, the majority (53.6%) have between 1-25 student members. On average, OSIGS offer 3.64 + 1.59 (mode = 4) executive positions. The most important initiative for OSIG groups was clinical/surgical shadowing, followed by faculty mentorship, and guidance for the residency application. OSIG involvement does impact the applicant, as all faculty mentors believed this to be an important component of the residency application. Leadership positions within OSIG was not perceived as being equally important. OSIG involvement did increase match rates; the match rate for all students at the schools surveyed (n=17) was 81.21% while the match rate for students within OSIG (n=17) was 82.39% (p<0.05). Of all students who applied to orthopedic surgery residency programs, 98.9% were members of OSIG, and of all students who successfully matched into orthopedic surgery residency programs in the 2019-2020 cycle, 100% (p<0.05) of students (n=17) were involved in OSIG.ConclusionThis study indicates the importance of involvement in OSIG as a conduit for clinical exposure and mentorship throughout medical education, and is especially relevant for applicants given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the residency application process. Data suggests that participation in an OSIG is a valuable experience for the medical student interested in orthopedics and that students involved in OSIGs are more likely to match into orthopedic residency programs. Accumulating evidence has revealed that livin gene and BCL-2 modifying factor (BMF) gene are closely associated with the initiation and progression of colon carcinoma by activating or suppressing multiple malignant processes. Those genes that can detect colon - cancer are a promising approach for cancer screening and diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate correlation between livin, BMF and p53 genes expression in colon cancer tissues of patients included in the study, and their relationship with clinicopathological features and survival outcome in those patients. In this study, 50 pathologically diagnosed early cancer colon patients included and their tissue biopsy with 50 matched adjacent normal tissue, and 50 adenoma tissue specimens were analyzed for livin gene and BMF gene expressions using real time PCR. The relationship of those genes expressions with clinicopathological features, tumor markers, Time to Progression and overall survival for those patients were correlated in cancer colon group. In this study, there was a significant a reciprocal relationship between over expression of livin gene and down regulation of BMF and p53 genes in colon cancer cells. Livin mRNA was significantly higher, while BMF and p53 mRNA were significantly lower in colorectal cancer tissue compared to benign and normal colon tissue specimens (P < 0.001), however, this finding was absent between colon adenomas and normal mucosa. There was a significant association between up regulation of livin and down regulation of BMF and p53 expressions with more aggressive tumor (advanced TNM stage), rapid progression with metastasis and decreased overall survival in cancer colon patients, hence these genes can serve as significant prognostic markers of poor outcome in colon cancer patients. This work highlights the role of livin, BMF and p53 genes in colorectal tumorigenesis and the applicability of using those genes as a diagnostic and prognostic markers in patients with colon carcinoma and as a good target for cancer colon treatment in the future.  相似文献

The sarcolemma of fast-twitch muscle is organized into "costameres," structures that are oriented transversely, over the Z and M lines of nearby myofibrils, and longitudinally, to form a rectilinear lattice. Here we examine the role of desmin, the major intermediate filament protein of muscle in organizing costameres. In control mouse muscle, desmin is enriched at the sarcolemmal domains that lie over nearby Z lines and that also contain beta-spectrin. In tibialis anterior muscle from mice lacking desmin due to homologous recombination, most costameres are lost. In myofibers from desmin -/- quadriceps, by contrast, most costameric structures are stable. Alternatively, Z line domains may be lost, whereas domains oriented longitudinally or lying over M lines are retained. Experiments with pan-specific antibodies to intermediate filament proteins and to cytokeratins suggest that control and desmin -/- muscles express similar levels of cytokeratins. Cytokeratins concentrate at the sarcolemma at all three domains of costameres when the latter are retained in desmin -/- muscle and redistribute with beta-spectrin at the sarcolemma when costameres are lost. Our results suggest that desmin associates with and selectively stabilizes the Z line domains of costameres, but that cytokeratins associate with all three domains of costameres, even in the absence of desmin.  相似文献

Summary

The protandric limpet, Patella ferruginea G., is the most endangered marine species in the Western Mediterranean and is at serious risk of extinction. Nevertheless, its biology and ecology are little known. In the present work, several reproductive aspects are studied. Recruitment take place in June and the largest individuals are the most scarce. The sex ratio is slanted towards the largest sizes, and the species seems to show sex change at sizes from 60 mm upwards, although males can be observed up to 80 mm. There is no correlation between size of oocytes and shell length; however, the larger females contribute greatly to the reproductive event, with high fecundity and GSI values. The mean diameter of oocytes was observed to be 149.78 μm, whereas the heads of spermatozoa were 3.78 μm long. The results of the present study increase the maximum length for males by double that cited in previous literature and highlight the importance of strictly protecting females (i.e., most of the largest individuals, >60 mm), since their population percentage is very low, in order to develop adequate strategies to preserve the species.  相似文献

Target-dependent survival of newly differentiated cells is an important part of neural development. In the case of myelin-forming oligodendrocytes, it matches the number of oligodendrocytes to the available axons [1]. In addition to growth factors, an axonal signal regulates this survival: when axons are transected, oligodendrocytes die and, conversely, when the number of axons is increased by genetic manipulation, oligodendrocyte numbers increase [2] [3]. Newly formed oligodendrocytes that fail to contact axons undergo apoptosis, and co-culture experiments that model axon-glial interactions in vitro reveal a neuronal survival effect not present in neuron-conditioned medium [4] [5], suggesting that the signal is non-diffusible and present on the surface of axons. The nature of these neuronal signals is unknown, as are the mechanisms by which they interact with growth-factor-mediated survival signals. As integrins can regulate survival in other cell types [6] [7] [8], we determined whether integrins are involved in the neuronal survival effect. We found that the laminin receptor alpha6beta1 integrin, which is expressed on oligodendrocytes, enhances the sensitivity of oligodendrocytes to the survival effect of growth factors. On the basis of this interaction between integrin and growth-factor-mediated signalling, we propose a simple model by which signals from axons and other cell types might interact to regulate oligodendrocyte cell numbers.  相似文献
