Substratum specificity and temporal periodicity of the attached diatom flora upon three aquatic vascular plants and an artificial substratum were examined in three Lake Erie marshes. No qualitative or quantitative specificity for substrata was observed. Variability of diatom assemblage structure within replicate samples of a particular substratum type was as great as, or greater than, variability between substrata. Diatom assemblages upon dowel rod displayed a mid to late summer density maximum. Variability of density maxima upon natural substrata was attributed to different growth rates of the host macrophytes. Diatom assemblages within each sampling site possessed a distinct temporal periodicity indicating that factors affecting diatom growth are heterogeneous in distribution throughout Lake Erie's littoral zone.  相似文献

Blooms of the red-tide dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis , occur annually in coastal waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico (GOMx) and impact marine resources, public health, and community economics. Early forecasting of and subsequent mitigation for blooms are objectives of agency, academic, and private partnerships. The 5-year, NOAA-funded MERHAB 2002: Eastern GOMx Sentinel Program will develop and assess the utility of a networked system of autonomous sampling platforms. The goal of the program is to become a strategic, proactive hardware- and information-technology for operational GOMx coastal observatories and as such, facilitate model initializations and state-wide, adaptive field sampling. Monitoring platforms will utilize both existing and newly established buoys, and autonomous, water-column profiling vehicles incorporating physical, chemical, and biological sensors. The biological sensors, including a bio-optical phytoplankton discriminator and a processor containing a molecular-probe array, previously have provided consistent results in laboratory and field trials and show great promise for remote, autonomous discrimination of K. brevis . Generated data will initialize a coupled bio-physical forecast model and validate remote sensing algorithms for K. brevis blooms. Data acquisition and forecasting efforts will be integrated with a geographically-comprehensive, rapid response component that incorporates adaptive, field sampling and a volunteer sampling network. NOAA's National Coastal Data Development Center will manage instrument data streams and disseminate and integrate all data into existing (and future) coastal partnerships with their associated management and communication network.  相似文献

San Ambrosio Island, together with San Felix 17 miles to the NNW, and the smaller González Islet form the San Felix Group situated on Lat. 26° 20'S and Long. 80° W. These islands, like all the others scattered off the Chilean coast, are outcrops of volcanic origin which emerge from depths as great as 10,000–14,000 feet below sea level. They lie 500 miles west of the port of Chañaral and about the same distance due north of Juan Fernandez (Robinson Crusoe) Island. As they lack fresh water and lie off the regular navigation routes, civilization has passed them by and, except for occasional visits by lobster fishermen, has left them uninhabited.  相似文献

Stander's Similarity Index (SIMI) has become a popular measure for comparing algal assemblages. The interpretation of the value produced by this index, however, has been highly variable between studies. Using replicate sampling of natural algal assemblages and computer simulation techniques, a method by which confidence intervals could be applied to SIMI was developed. This paper presents that method and gives an example using hypothetical species counts of two algal assemblages. Since a more realistic range of the actual similarity between two assemblages is produced, the estimation of confidence intervals when using SIMI is recommended.  相似文献

Inversion heterozygosity has long been noted for its ability to suppress the transmission of recombinant chromosomes, as well as for altering the frequency and location of recombination events. In our search for meiotic situations with enrichment for nonexchange and/or single distal-exchange chromosome pairs, exchange configurations that are at higher risk for nondisjunction in humans and other organisms, we examined both exchange and segregation patterns in 2728 oocytes from mice heterozygous for paracentric inversions, as well as controls. We found dramatic alterations in exchange position in the heterozygotes, including an increased frequency of distal exchanges for two of the inversions studied. However, nondisjunction was not significantly increased in oocytes heterozygous for any inversion. When data from all inversion heterozygotes were pooled, meiotic nondisjunction was slightly but significantly higher in inversion heterozygotes (1.2%) than in controls (0%), although the frequency was still too low to justify the use of inversion heterozygotes as a model of human nondisjunction.  相似文献

The effects of the triazine herbicide, simazine, on photosynthetic oxygen evolution and growth rate in photoacclimated populations of Anabaena circinalis Rabenhorst were investigated. Chemostat populations were acclimated to photon flux densities (PFDs) of 50, 130, and 230 μmol·m?2·s?1 of photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), Decreases in chlorophyll a (Chl a). c-phycocyanin (CPC), and total carotenoid (TCar) contents and CPC: Chl a and CPC: TCar ratios of populations coincided with increasing PFD, Polynomial regression models that characterize inhibition of photosynthesis for populations acclimated to 50 and 130 μmol photons·m?2·s?1 PAR were distinct from the model for populations acclimated to 230 μmol photons·m?2·s?1 PAR. Simazine concentrations that, depressed oxygen evolution 50% compared to controls decreased with increasing PFD. Increases and decreases in both biomass and growth rate coincided with increasing PFD and simazine concentration, respectively. Simazine concentrations that depressed growth rate 50% compared to controls increased with decreasing PFD. The differences in photosynthetic and growth inhibition among photoacclimated populations indicate that sensitivity to photosystem II inhibitors is affected by alterations in pigment contents.  相似文献

Although several species of the Synurophyceae have been associated with taste and odor problems in potable water supplies, electron microscopic-based field studies linked problematic blooms only toSynura petersenii Korshikov. Eventually, the organic compoundtrans-2,cis-6-nonadienal was implicated to cause the associated cucumberlike odors. The objective of this study was to survey unialgal cultures of various Synurophycean species for the occurrence oftrans-2,cis-6-nonadienal. The compound was detected throughout a 24-day growth assay with aS. petersenii isolate, but was not detected in an identical assay withSynura sphagnicola (Korshikov) Korshikov. In separate 24-day cultures,trans-2,cis-6-nonadienal was detected in two isolates from theS. petersenii species complex, but was not detected in isolates of twoMallomonas or fourSynura taxa not from theS. petersenii complex. These results support the hypothesis that production oftrans-2,cis-6-nonadienal is unique to taxa within theS. petersenii complex. When contrast-enhancing optics and specific specimen preparation techniques are employed, light microscopy can be used to distinguish taxa in theS. petersenii complex from all other Synurophycean taxa. These methods are suggested as an efficient way to monitortrans-2,cis-6-nonadienal-producing taxa in potable water supplies.Author for correspondence  相似文献

Carotenoids produce most of the brilliant orange and yellow colours seen in animals, but animals cannot synthesize these pigments and must rely on dietary sources. The idea that carotenoids make good signals because they are a scarce limiting resource was proposed two decades ago and has become the leading hypothesis for the role of carotenoids in animal communication. To our knowledge, until now, however, there has been no direct evidence that carotenoids are a limiting resource in nature. We showed that carotenoid availability in the wild limits the expression of sexual coloration in guppies (Poecilia reticulata), a species in which females prefer males with brighter orange carotenoid-containing spots. Further, the degree of carotenoid limitation varies geographically along a replicated environmental gradient (rainforest canopy cover), which opens new avenues for testing signal evolution theory.  相似文献

Elevated levels of glucocorticoids caused by disease (Cushing's syndrome) or therapeutic treatment of asthma are known to cause osteoporosis. Space flight, an environmental condition, is known to cause a rise in endogenous cortisols accompanied by a significant loss of bone and calcium. Long-term space inhabitants have lost up to 18% of weight bearing bone during long-term flight. This study demonstrates that elevated concentrations of glucocorticoids lower the endogenous production of PGE2 and interfere with osteoblast proliferation. Osteoblasts grown with dexamethasone had significantly lower DNA synthesis and endogenous synthesis of PGE2. Addition of exogenous dmPGE2 to the dexamethasone growth-inhibited cells stimulated DNA synthesis over twofold. In synchronous control cultures, we found that endogenous prostaglandin synthesis increased in late G1, preceding S-phase DNA synthesis by several hours. The addition of exogenous dexamethasone to synchronous cultures resulted in a significant decrease in the prostaglandin synthesis followed by a significant decrease in DNA synthesis in parallel cultures. Further, dexamethasone caused the actin cytoskeleton to collapse and the cell morphology to become rounded and spindle shaped. Addition of exogenous PGE2 to the dexamethasone-treated osteoblasts caused recovery of the actin architecture and phenotype. These data support the hypothesis that the glucocorticoid-mediated decrease in prostaglandin synthesis may be a contributing factor in the reduced bone quality and trabecular bone formation seen in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.  相似文献
