Since their first discovery, Neandertals have served as an out-group for interpreting human variation. Their out-group role has changed over the years because in spite of the fact that Neandertals are the most abundant of all fossil remains (or perhaps because of this) their interpretation is the most controversial of all human fossils. Many believe them to be a different, albeit human-like species, but recent genetic evidence supports anatomical interpretations indicating that interbreeding with other humans was an important aspect of human evolution. The combination of anatomical difference and restricted gene flow between populations suggests the possibility that Neandertals may have been a true human race. Objective

To evaluate T2-signal of high-resolution MRI in distal ulnar nerve branches at the wrist as diagnostic sign of guyon’s-canal-syndrome (GCS).

Materials and Methods

11 GCS patients confirmed by clinical/electrophysiological findings, and 20 wrists from 11 asymptomatic volunteers were prospectively included to undergo the following protocol: axial T2-weighted-fat-suppressed and T1-weighted-turbo-spin-echo-sequences (3T-MR-scanner, Magnetom/Verio/Siemens). Patients were examined in prone position with the arm extended and wrist placed in an 8-channel surface-array-coil. Nerve T2-signal was evaluated as contrast-to-noise-ratios (CNR) from proximal-to-distal in ulnar nerve trunk, its superficial/sensory and deep/motor branch. Distal motor-nerve-conduction (distal-motor-latency (dml)) to first dorsal-interosseus (IOD I) and abductor digiti minimi muscles was correlated with T2-signal. Approval by the institutional review-board and written informed consent was given by all participants.

Results

In GCS, mean nerve T2-signal was strongly increased within the deep/motor branch (11.7±4.8 vs.controls:−5.3±2.4;p = 0.001) but clearly less and not significantly increased in ulnar nerve trunk (6.8±6.4vs.−7.4±2.5;p = 0.07) and superficial/sensory branch (−2.1±4.9vs.−9.7±2.9;p = 0.08). Median nerve T2-signal did not differ between patients and controls (−9.8±2.5vs.−6.7±4.2;p = 0.45). T2-signal of deep/motor branch correlated strongly with motor-conduction-velocity to IOD I in non-linear fashion (R2 = −0.8;p<0.001). ROC-analysis revealed increased nerve T2-signal of the deep/motor branch to be a sign of excellent diagnostic performance (area-under-the-curve 0.94, 95% CI: 0.85–1.00; specificity 90%, sensitivity 89.5%).

Conclusions

Nerve T2-signal increase of distal ulnar nerve branches and in particular of the deep/motor branch is highly accurate for the diagnostic determination of GCS. Furthermore, for the first time it was found in nerve entrapment injury that T2-signal strongly correlates with electrical-conduction-velocity.  相似文献

Levulinic acid has potential as an important basic chemical material. This study proposed a method of making levulinic acid using abundant and low cost whole kernel sorghum grain as the raw material. Flour made from grinding whole kernel sorghum grains was blended with 2%, 5% and 8% aqueous solutions of sulfuric acid. Mixtures were heated to 160 or 200 degrees C in a pressurized reactor. A stepwise heating scheme helped improve the yield of levulinic acid. Levulinic acid yield was determined based on sorghum flour content, as opposed to total sorghum mass. Levulinic acid yield increased as reaction temperature increased. Higher sulfuric acid concentration also significantly increased the levulinic acid yield. However, flour loading had an adverse effect on levulinic acid yield. A maximum yield of 32.6% levulinic acid was achieved at 200 degrees C, 8% sulfuric acid concentration and 10% flour loading. A linear regression model was capable of predicting the levulinic acid yield with respect to effects of reaction temperature, mineral acid concentration and flour loading (R2 = 0.88).  相似文献

The net ecosystem carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange (NEE) of nine European mountain grassland ecosystems was measured during 2002–2004 using the eddy covariance method. Overall, the availability of photosynthetically active radiation (PPFD) was the single most important abiotic influence factor for NEE. Its role changed markedly during the course of the season, PPFD being a better predictor for NEE during periods favorable for CO2 uptake, which was spring and autumn for the sites characterized by summer droughts (southern sites) and (peak) summer for the Alpine and northern study sites. This general pattern was interrupted by grassland management practices, that is, mowing and grazing, when the variability in NEE explained by PPFD decreased in concert with the amount of aboveground biomass (BMag). Temperature was the abiotic influence factor that explained most of the variability in ecosystem respiration at the Alpine and northern study sites, but not at the southern sites characterized by a pronounced summer drought, where soil water availability and the amount of aboveground biomass were more or equally important. The amount of assimilating plant area was the single most important biotic variable determining the maximum ecosystem carbon uptake potential, that is, the NEE at saturating PPFD. Good correspondence, in terms of the magnitude of NEE, was observed with many (semi-) natural grasslands around the world, but not with grasslands sown on fertile soils in lowland locations, which exhibited higher maximum carbon gains at lower respiratory costs. It is concluded that, through triggering rapid changes in the amount and area of the aboveground plant matter, the timing and frequency of land management practices is crucial for the short-term sensitivity of the NEE of the investigated mountain grassland ecosystems to climatic drivers.  相似文献

A new study to address the biosphere-atmosphere exchange of ammonia (NH3) with grasslands is applying a European transect to interpret NH3 fluxes in relation to atmospheric conditions, grassland management and soil chemistry. Micrometeorological measurements using the aerodynamic gradient method (AGM) with continuous NH3 detectors are supported by bioassays of the NH3 `stomatal compensation point' (s). Relaxed eddy accumulation (REA) is also applied to enable flux measurements at one height; this is relevant to help address flux divergence due to gas-particle inter-conversion or the presence of local sources in a landscape.Continuous measurements that contrast intensively managed grasslands with semi-natural grasslands allow a scaling up from 15 min values to seasonal means. The measurements demonstrate the bi-directional nature of NH3 fluxes, with typically daytime emission and small nocturnal deposition. They confirm the existence of enhanced NH3 emissions (e.g. 30 g N ha–1 d–1) following cutting of intensively managed swards. Further increased emissions follow fertilization with NH4NO3 (typically 70 g N ha–1 d–1). Measurements using REA support these patterns, but require a greater analytical precision than with the AGM.The results are being used to develop models of NH3 exchange. `Canopy compensation point' resistance models reproduce bi-directional diurnal patterns, but currently lack a mechanistic basis to predict changes in relation to grassland phenology. An advance proposal here is the coupling of s to dynamic models of grassland C–N cycling, and a relationship with modelled plant substrate-N is shown. Applications of the work include incorporation of the resistance models in NH3 dispersion modelling and assessment of global change scenarios.  相似文献

From enrichment cultures established for purple nonsulfur bacteria using water and sediment samples from Lake Bogoria and Crater Lake, two soda lakes in the African Rift Valley, three strains of purple nonsulfur bacteria were isolated; strain LBB1 was studied in detail. Cells of strain LBB1 were motile and spherical to rod-shaped, suggesting a relationship to Rhodobacter or Rhodovulum species, and the organism was capable of both phototrophic and chemotrophic growth on a wide variety of organic compounds. Phototrophically grown cultures were yellow to yellow-brown in color and grew optimally at pH 9 (pH range 7.5-10) and 1% NaCl (range 0-10%). In physiological studies of strain LBB1, neither photoautotrophy (H2- or sulfide-dependent) nor nitrogen fixation was observed. Absorption spectra revealed that all three strains contained bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the spheroidene pathway and synthesized only a light-harvesting (LH) I-type photosynthetic antenna complex. Electron microscopy of cells of strain LBB1 revealed a vesicular intracytoplasmic membrane system, although only a few vesicles were observed per cell. The G+C content of strain LBB1 DNA was 59 mol%, significantly lower than that of known Rhodobacter and Rhodovulum species, and its phylogeny as determined by ribosomal RNA gene sequencing placed it within the Rhodobacter/Rhodovulum clade yet distinct from all described species of either of these genera. The unique assemblage of properties observed in strain LBB1 warrants its inclusion in a new genus of purple nonsulfur bacteria and the name Rhodobaca bogoriensis is proposed herein, the genus name reflecting morphological characteristics and the species epithet referring to the habitat.  相似文献

We documented that the NF-kappaB signaling pathway was rapidly induced following human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection of human fibroblasts and that this induced NF-kappaB activity promoted efficient transactivation of the major immediate-early promoter (MIEP). Previously, we showed that the major HCMV envelope glycoproteins, gB and gH, initiated this NF-kappaB signaling event. However, we also hypothesized that there were additional mechanisms utilized by the virus to rapidly upregulate NF-kappaB. In this light, we specifically hypothesized that the HCMV virion contained IkappaBalpha kinase activity, allowing for direct phosphorylation of IkappaBalpha following virion entry into infected cells. In vitro kinase assays performed on purified HCMV virion extract identified bona fide IkappaBalpha kinase activity in the virion. The enzyme responsible for this kinase activity was identified as casein kinase II (CKII), a cellular serine-threonine protein kinase. CKII activity was necessary for efficient transactivation of the MIEP and IE gene expression. CKII is generally considered to be a constitutively active kinase. We suggest that this molecular characteristic of CKII represents the biologic rationale for the viral capture and utilization of this kinase early after infection. The packaging of CKII into the HCMV virion identifies that diverse molecular mechanisms are utilized by HCMV for rapid NF-kappaB activation. We propose that HCMV possesses multiple pathways to increase NF-kappaB activity to ensure that the correct temporal regulation of NF-kappaB occurs following infection and that sufficient threshold levels of NF-kappaB are reached in the diverse array of cells, including monocytes and endothelial cells, infected in vivo.  相似文献
