Objective
We aimed to study current practices in growth monitoring by European primary care paediatricians and to explore their perceived needs in this field.Methods
We developed a cross-sectional, anonymous on-line survey and contacted primary care paediatricians listed in national directories in the 18 European countries with a confederation of primary care paediatricians. Paediatricians participated in the survey between April and September 2011.Results
Of the 1,198 paediatricians from 11 European countries (response rate 13%) who participated, 29% used the 2006 World Health Organization Multicentre Growth Reference Study growth charts, 69% used national growth charts; 61% used software to draw growth charts and 79% did not use a formal algorithm to detect abnormal growth on growth charts. Among the 21% of paediatricians who used algorithms, many used non-algorithmic simple thresholds for height and weight and none used the algorithms published in the international literature. In all, 69% of paediatricians declared that a validated algorithm to monitor growth would be useful in daily practice. We found important between-country variations.Conclusion
The varied growth-monitoring practices declared by primary care paediatricians reveals the need for standardization and evidence-based algorithms to define abnormal growth and the development of software that would use such algorithms. 相似文献143.

In this paper, we performed phylogenetic analyses of Mesotriton alpestris populations from the entire range of species distribution, using fragments of two mtDNA genes, cytochrome b (309bp) and 16S rRNA ( approximately 500bp). Sequence diversity patterns and phylogenetic analyses reveal the existence of a relict lineage (Clade A) of late Miocene origin, comprising populations from south-eastern Serbia. This lineage is proposed to be ancestor to a western and an eastern lineage, which diverged during the middle Pliocene. The western lineage is further divided in two clades (Clades B, C) of middle Pliocene origin that represent populations from Italy (B) and populations from central Europe and Iberia (C). Further subdivision, dated back to the middle-late Pliocene, was found within the eastern lineage, representing southern (Clade D) and central-northern (Clade E) Balkan populations, respectively. Extensive sequence divergence, implying greater isolation in multiple refugia, is found within eastern clades, while the western clades seem to have been involved in the colonization of central, western and north-eastern Europe from a hypothetical refugium in central Europe. The extent of divergence does not support the current taxonomy indicating cryptic speciation in the Balkans, while paedomorphic lineages were found to have been evolved during early-middle Pleistocene probably as a response to the ongoing dramatic climatic oscillations. 相似文献

Considering the growing interest for mushrooms and the demand search of natural antioxidants sources, the aim of this study
was to investigate the antioxidant properties of two edible widely used Boletus species, Boletus edulis, and Boletus auranticus, collected from Istra region in Croatia in late summer 2007. To evaluate the antioxidant properties and content of antioxidant
compounds, scavenging capacity on DPPH˙, OH˙, and O2˙− radicals, reducing power and capacity to inhibit lipid peroxidation has been investigated. It is determined that content
of total phenols (41.82 ± 0.08 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram of dry extract) was higher for B. edulis. Using high performance liquid chromatography/diode array detector analysis, the main antioxidant compound, variegatic acid,
has been detected and quantified. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate assay was used as a preliminary free radical–scavenging
evaluation. By this assay, it has been found that B. edulis dry mushroom extract exhibits 50% of inhibition value at the extract concentration of 0.016 ± 0.0003 mg/ml. The extracts
were capable of reducing iron(III) and, thus, are capable of donating electrons. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spin-trapping
and spin-probing techniques, activity against relevant reactive species, ˙OH and O2˙− radical, was analyzed for both mushroom extracts. Both investigated extracts are determined as good inhibitors for ˙OH radical
reduction, and both exhibited significant capacity for scavenging O2˙− radical and for that could help to prevent or meliorate oxidative damage. Only B. edulis extract prevents lipid peroxidation. Investigated mushroom extracts could represent easily accessible natural antioxidant

BackgroundDengue fever is a public health problem in the tropical and sub-tropical world. Dengue cases have grown dramatically in recent years as well as dengue mortality. Colombia has experienced periodic dengue outbreaks with numerous dengue related-deaths, where the Santander department has been particularly affected. Although social determinants of health (SDH) shape health outcomes, including mortality, it is not yet understood how these affect dengue mortality. The aim of this pilot study was to develop and pre-test a social autopsy (SA) tool for dengue mortality.ConclusionsThe SA tool is based on the scientific literature, a validated conceptual framework, researchers’ and health professionals’ expertise, and a pilot study. It is the first time that a SA tool has been created for the dengue mortality context. Our work furthers the study on SDH and how these are applied to neglected tropical diseases, like dengue. This tool could be integrated in surveillance systems to provide complementary information on the modifiable and avoidable death-related factors and therefore, be able to formulate interventions for dengue mortality reduction. 相似文献

The cysteine carboxypeptidase cathepsin X has been recognized as an important player in degenerative processes during normal aging and in pathological conditions. In this study we identify isozymes alpha- and gamma-enolases as targets for cathepsin X. Cathepsin X sequentially cleaves C-terminal amino acids of both isozymes, abolishing their neurotrophic activity. Neuronal cell survival and neuritogenesis are, in this way, regulated, as shown on pheochromocytoma cell line PC12. Inhibition of cathepsin X activity increases generation of plasmin, essential for neuronal differentiation and changes the length distribution of neurites, especially in the early phase of neurite outgrowth. Moreover, cathepsin X inhibition increases neuronal survival and reduces serum deprivation induced apoptosis, particularly in the absence of nerve growth factor. On the other hand, the proliferation of cells is decreased, indicating induction of differentiation. Our study reveals enolase isozymes as crucial neurotrophic factors that are regulated by the proteolytic activity of cathepsin X. 相似文献

Background
NOL7 is a candidate tumor suppressor that localizes to a chromosomal region 6p23. This locus is frequently lost in a number of malignancies, and consistent loss of NOL7 through loss of heterozygosity and decreased mRNA and protein expression has been observed in tumors and cell lines. Reintroduction of NOL7 into cells resulted in significant suppression of in vivo tumor growth and modulation of the angiogenic phenotype. In the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, interphase microtubules (MTs) position the nucleus [1, 2], which in turn positions the cell-division plane [1, 3]. It is unclear how the spindle orients, with respect to the predetermined division plane, to ensure that the chromosomes are segregated across this plane. It has been proposed that, during prometaphase, the astral MT interaction with the cell cortex aligns the spindle with the cell axis [4] and also participates in a spindle orientation checkpoint (SOC), which delays entry into anaphase as long as the spindle is misaligned [5-7]. Here, we trace the position of the spindle throughout mitosis in a single-cell assay. We find no evidence for the SOC. We show that the spindle is remarkably well aligned with the cell longitudinal axis at the onset of mitosis, by growing along the axis of the adjacent interphase MT. Misalignment of nascent spindles can give rise to anucleate cells when spindle elongation is impaired. We propose a new role for interphase microtubules: through interaction with the spindle pole body, interphase microtubules determine the initial alignment of the spindle in the subsequent cell division. 相似文献
