Seeds and fruits of Early Cretaceous (Barremian-Aptian) angiosperms from the Famalic?o locality in Portugal were analyzed to establish seed and fruit size (volume) distributions and to infer the proportion of animal-dispersed fruits. On the basis of a sample of 106 angiosperm fruit and seed taxa, the average seed size was 0.78 mm3 (range 0.02-6.86 mm3), whereas the average fruit size was 2.06 mm3 (range 0.12-8.34 mm3). Variation in seed size among taxa is smaller than in modern plant communities, but within-taxon variation is similar to that known for extant plants. No significant difference in the size of "fleshy" versus other fruits was observed. The proportion of fleshy fruits was 24.5%. This high figure was surprising and indicates that the significance of animal dispersal during an early stage in angiosperm evolution has been underestimated. We suggest that reptiles and multituberculates, and perhaps other mammals and birds as well, were the likely seed dispersers and that the early angiosperms from Famalic?o probably were herbs or small shrubs that inhabited a semiopen coniferous woodland. 相似文献

Calmodulin (CaM) functions as a Ca2+ sensor for inactivation and, in some cases, facilitation of a variety of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. A crucial determinant for CaM binding to these channels is the IQ motif in the COOH-terminal tail of the channel-forming subunit. The binding of CaM to IQ peptides from Lc-, P/Q-, and R-type, but not N-type, voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels increases the Ca2+ affinity of both lobes of CaM, producing similar N- and C-lobe Ca2+ affinities. Ca2+ associates with and dissociates from the N-lobe much more rapidly than the C-lobe when CaM is bound to the IQ peptides. Compared with the other IQ peptides, CaM-bound Lc-IQ has the highest Ca2+ affinity and the most rapid rates of Ca2+ association at both lobes, which is likely to make Ca2+ binding to CaM, bound to this channel, less sensitive than other channels to intracellular Ca2+ buffers. These kinetic differences in Ca2+ binding to the lobes of CaM when bound to the different IQ motifs may explain both the ability of CaM to perform multiple functions in these channels and the differences in CaM regulation of the different voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. These are reported in the scientific literature and presented to the scientific community in various congresses and symposia as well as through direct contacts and collaborations. Conversion of these research results to industrially useful innovations is, however, considerably more complex than generally appreciated. The long and winding road from the research laboratory to industrial applications will be illustrated with two recent examples from Chr. To determine whether IL-6 increases lipolysis and fat oxidation in patients with type 2 diabetes and/or whether it exerts this effect independently of changes to the hormonal milieu, patients with type 2 diabetes (D) and healthy control subjects (CON) underwent recombinant human (rh)IL-6 infusion for 3 h. Rates of appearance (Ra) and disappearance (Rd) of [U-(13C)]palmitate and [6,6-(2H2)]glucose were determined. rhIL-6 infusion increased (P < 0.05) palmitate Ra and Rd in a similar fashion in both groups. Neither plasma glucose concentration nor glucose Ra/Rd was affected by rhIL-6 infusion in either group, whereas rhIL-6 infusion resulted in a reduction (P < 0.05) in circulating insulin in D. Plasma growth hormone (GH) was increased (P < 0.05) by IL-6 in CON, and cortisol increased (P < 0.05) in response to IL-6 in both groups. To determine whether IL-6 was exerting its effect directly or through activation of these hormones, we performed cell culture experiments. Fully differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes were treated with PBS (control) IL-6, or IL-6 plus dexamethasone and GH. IL-6 treatment alone increased (P < 0.05) lipolysis, but this effect was reduced by the addition of dexamethasone and GH such that IL-6 plus dexamethasone and GH had blunted (P < 0.05) lipolysis compared with IL-6 alone. To assess whether IL-6 increases fat oxidation, L6 myotubes were treated with PBS (Control), IL-6, or AICAR, a compound known to increase lipid oxidation. Both IL-6 and AICAR markedly increased (P < 0.05) oxidation of [(14)C]palmitate compared with Control. Acute IL-6 treatment increased fatty acid turnover in D patients as well as healthy CON subjects. Moreover, IL-6 appears to be activating lipolysis independently of elevations in GH and/or cortisol and appears to be a potent catalyst for fat oxidation in muscle cells. 相似文献

We describe a simple and effective procedure to isolate antifreeze proteins (AFPs) from the hemolymph of larvae of the longhorn beetle Rhagium inquisitor, and present some characteristics of their structures. Several AFPs were isolated from the hemolymph of this species by heat and acid extraction followed by cation exchange. The hemolymph contains at least six AFPs ranging in size from 12.5 to 12.8 kDa. Of these, three were separated to purity by the ion exchange step, as indicated by mass spectrometry. The remaining three forms were further separated by size exclusion chromatography, but could not be isolated to purity. All AFPs in the hemolymph of this species appears to have isoelectric points above 8.00. The dominant form, RiAFP(H4), was purified by the ion exchange step. Its amino acid composition reveals a lower level of cysteine and a higher level of threonine, arginine, alanine and glycine than seen in other insect AFPs. Its trypsin fingerprint does not match that of any known protein. It interacts with ice both in the anionic and cationic state. 相似文献

The nephric duct plays a central role in orchestrating the development of the mammalian urogenital system. Lim 1 is a homeobox gene required for head and urogenital development in the mouse but most Lim 1-deficient embryos die by embryonic day 10. To determine the role of Lim 1 in the development of the nephric duct, we conditionally removed Lim 1 in the nephric epithelium just after the nephric duct begins to form using a floxed allele of Lim 1 and Pax2-cre transgenic mice. We report that Lim 1 conditional knockout mice have renal hypoplasia and hydronephrosis. Developmental studies revealed that the caudal portion of the nephric duct did not reach the urogenital sinus at embryonic day 10.5, formation of the ureteric bud was delayed, the ureteric bud was smaller and branching of the ureteric bud reduced. We also found that the nephric duct was generally not maintained and extension of the Müllerian duct inhibited. Molecular analysis indicated that Pax2 was expressed normally but the expression of Wnt9b and E-cadherin in the nephric duct was markedly altered. These results suggest that Lim 1 influences nephric duct extension and ureteric bud outgrowth by regulating and or maintaining the differentiation of the nephric epithelium. 相似文献

Nkx family members are essential for normal development of many different tissues such as the heart, lungs, thyroid, prostate, and CNS. Here, we describe the endodermal expression pattern of three Nkx6 family genes of which two shows conserved expression in the early pancreatic epithelium. In chicken, Nkx6.1 expression is not restricted to the presumptive pancreatic area but is more broadly expressed in the endoderm. In mice, expression of Nkx6.1 is restricted to the pancreatic epithelium. In both mice and chicken, Nkx6.2 and Pdx1 are expressed in very similar domains, identifying Nkx6.2 as a novel marker of pancreas endoderm. Additionally, our results show that Nkx6.3 is expressed transiently in pancreatic endoderm in chicken but not mouse embryos. At later stages, Nkx6.3 is found in the caudal stomach and rostral duodenum in both species. Finally, we demonstrate that Pdx1 is required for Nkx6.1 but not Nkx6.2 expression in mice and that ectopic Pdx1 can induce Nkx6.1 but not Nkx6.2 or Nkx6.3 expression in anterior chicken endoderm. These results demonstrate that Nkx6.1 lies downstream of Pdx1 in a genetic pathway and that Pdx1 is required and sufficient for Nkx6.1 expression in the early foregut endoderm. 相似文献
