Behavioral strategies of aphid hyperparasitoids to escape aggression by honeydew-collecting ants 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We analyzed the behavioral interactions between two species of honeydew-collecting ants (Lasius niger, Myrmica laevinodis) and foraging females of four species of aphid hyperparasitoids (Aphidencyrtus aphidivorus, Dendrocerus carpenteri, Pachyneuron aphidis, Asaphes vulgaris) usingAphis fabae ssp.cirsiiacanthoidis andLysiphlebus cardui on thistles as aphid and primary parasitoid, respectively. The observed interaction patterns and foraging parameters varied within hyperparasitoid species and revealed different strategies based upon behavioral and morphological constraints.D. carpenteri generally tried to avoid ant encounters. This avoidance strategy was successful in interactions withM. laevinodis but failed when encountering the more aggressiveL. niger, which caused about 26% adult mortality. In contrast,A. aphidivorus, P. aphidis, andA. vulgaris possess jumping ability and were hardly exposed to mortality risks. The escape reaction jump off was used as soon as ants made physical contact with foraging females. While the flight strategy ofP. aphidis is connected with cryptic movement patterns without avoidance behavior,A. aphidivorus first avoided ants and jumped off only as a last resort. Similar patterns, but less expressive, are displayed byA. vulgaris. We suggest that these different strategies are responsible for different foraging success in ant-attended resources in field. 相似文献

Uptake and biliary excretion of metals were studied in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, exposed through spiked sediment to a mixture of seven heavy metals. Metal concentrations and toxicity of bile and blood plasma were used as indicators of exposure. Among the seven metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) only three (Cu, Hg, and Pb) were concentrated in the bile (bile-plasma ratio >1). Bile-plasma ratios in the rainbow trout were similar to those found in rats for Cu and Hg. Daphnia magna bioassays were used to determine toxicity of bile and blood plasma in the same trout. Toxicity of bile and blood plasma increased after treatment with acid. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that toxicity of bile and blood plasma to D. magna in metal-exposed trout was significantly correlated with (1) bile and blood plasma test concentration, (2) acid treatment of bile and blood plasma (hydrolysis of metal-plasma and metal-bile complexes) and (3) sediment concentration of metals during exposure of trout. In order to significantly detect the magnitude of the exposure to a xenobiotic the biomarker must respond in a dose- or time-dependent manner. Therefore, the potential use of bile toxicity as a biomarker of heavy metal exposure in fish is probably limited by the low bioconcentration of many of these toxicants in bile. 相似文献

In the present investigation we studied the carbonic anhydrase (CA) in various tissues of Chinese crabEriocheir sinensis which were acclimated to different salinities (0, 10, 20, 30‰). We found only negligible CA activity in haemolymph, heart,
hypodermis, antennal gland, leg muscle and digestive gland, irrespective of the acclimation medium. However, high amounts
of CA activity were found in the gills. In the case of the posterior gills, a strong dependence on the acclimatization of
the animals was demonstrated; the highest activities were found in those adapted to tap water. To investigate the cellular
distribution of the CA in the posterior gills, the additional enzyme activities were measured in all fractions of a differential
centrifugation of the gill homogenate: Na+/K+-ATP'ase (a marker for the plasmamembrane); lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; as marker for the cytosol); and succinate dehydrogenase
(SDH; as marker for mitochondria). Independent of the acclimation salinity (0 or 36‰ salinity), we found about 70% of CA associated
with the highest level of the Na+/K+-ATP'ase in the second 100 000 g pellet (membrane fraction), while only 15% were found in the cytosolic fractions (associated
with highest levels of LDH). We conclude that the carbonic anhydrase of posterior gills of the Chinese crab is mainly membrane-bound.
Furthermore, the activity of CA shows a strong dependence on the salinity of the water in which the crabs were kept. 相似文献

Neospora caninum is a recently recognized protozoan organism that causes fatal neuromuscular disease in dogs and abortions and stillbirths in cattle and other animals (Dubey & Lindsay 1993). The parasite is morphologically similar and phylogenetically very closely related to the cyst-forming coccidium Toxoplasma gondii (Ellis et al. 1994, Holmdahl et al. 1994). This group of parasites has a two-host life cycle principally involving a carnivorous definitive host and a herbivorous or omnivorous intermediate host. However, with N. caninum, there is as yet no knowledge of any definitive host harbouring sexual stages of the parasite. A HPLC method has been developed to measure phosphatidylcholine (PC) containing reactive carbonyl functions in the sn-acyl residue in order to study processes in which such reactive carbonyls can be formed due to e.g. oxidative fragmentation. The method has been applied to determine PC-bound carbonyls as 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazones (DNPH) in plasma of burn patients. Plasma from healthy volunteers served as controls. Additionally, in vitro oxidation experiments (A: plasma, buffer diluted; B: plasma + iron-EDTA complex and C: plasma + iron-EDTA complex + H2O2) have been performed to obtain and to identify 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatizable carbonyl functions in plasma PC. Both, the PC-aldehydes and PC-aldehyde DNPH derivatives were cleavable with phospholipase C. Quantification was based on thin-layer chromatography purified soybean phosphatidylcholine, which was identically oxidized and derivatized as the plasma lipids in vitro. 相似文献

The energetic adaptations of non-breeding Tengmalm's owls (Aegolius funereus) to temperature and fasting were studied during the birds' autumnal irruptions in western Finland. Allometric analysis (including literature data and two larger owl species measured in this study) indicates that the basal metabolic rate of owls is below the mean level of non-passerine birds. However, the basal metabolic rate of the 130-g Tengmalm's owl (1.13 W) is higher than in other owls of similar size. This is probably related to its northern distribution and nomadic life history. Relative to its size, Tengmalm's owl has excellent cold resistance due to effective insulation (lower critical temperature +10°C, minimum conductance 0.19 mW·cm-2·°C-1). Radiotelemetric measurements of body temperature showed that the level of body temperature is lower than for birds in general (39.4°C at zero activity) and that the amplitude of the diurnal cycle is also low (0.2–0.6°C). In contrast to many other small birds, Tengmalm's owls do not enter hypothermia during a 5-day fast at thermoneutrality or in cold. Moreover, while the metabolic rate per bird shows the expected mass-dependent decrease, the mass-specific rate decreases only slightly during the fast. In line with this, there was no decrease in the plasma triiodothyronine concentration during the fast in the owl, whereas a dramtic drop was observed in the pigeon and Japanese quail that were used as a reference. Despite this, the owl has an excellent capacity for fasting because of its ability to accumulate extensive fat depots and its low overall metabolic rate. Fasting reduced evaporative water loss to 50% of that in the fed state. Calculations show that the oxygen consumption observed in fasting birds would involve a production of metabolic water barely sufficient to compensate for evaporative water loss. The threat of dehydration may thus set a limit to the decrease in metabolic rate in fasting owls (owls rely totally on water either ingested with food or produced metabolically). We conclude that the metabolic strategy in Tengmalm's owl is largely dictated by an evolutionary pressure for fasting endurance. With the restrictions set by small body size and water economy, this bird has apparently taken these adaptations to an extreme. The constraints that preclude hypothermia, which could increase the capacity for fasting even more, remain unknown.Abbreviations BM

The bilateral lobe of interscapular brown adipose tissue of the Djungarian hamster was unilaterally denervated in order to study the role of the sympathetic innervation for maintenance and cold-induced increase of non-shivering thermogenesis. Denervation decreased the noradrenaline content of brown adipose tissue to less than 9% of the intact contralateral pad. This low noradrenaline level was maintained for 1–14 days after denervation. First, to study the role of the sympathetic innervation of brown adipose tissue in the maintenance of the high thermogenic capacity characteristic of the cold acclimated state, brown adipose tissue was denervated in hamsters either kept at thermoneutrality or acclimated to 5°C ambient temperature for 4 weeks. Cold-acclimated hamsters had elevated levels of uncoupling protein messenger ribonucleic acid (8.1-fold) and cytochrom-c oxidase-activity (3-fold). Denervation of brown adipose tissue decreased uncoupling protein-messenger ribonucleic acid level and cytochrom-c-oxidase-activity as compared to the intact pad in thermoneutral and in cold-acclimated hamsters. However, in cold-acclimated hamsters uncoupling protein-messenger ribonucleic acid level and cytochrom-c-oxidase-activity in denervated brown adipose tissue both were maintained on an elevated 6-fold higher levels as compared to thermoneutral controls. Second, to study the role of the sympathetic innervation of brown adipose tissue in the cold-induced increase in thermogenic capacity, hamsters were denervated prior to cold acclimation and responses were measured after 3 and 14 days of cold exposure. Uncoupling protein-messenger ribonucleic acid level and cytochrom-c-oxidase-activity of intact brown adipose tissue increased after 14 days cold acclimation. Denervation did not completely prevent a cold-induced 1.5-fold increase of cytochrom-c-oxidase-activity and a 3.2-fold increase of the uncoupling protein-messenger ribonucleic acid level in denervated brown adipose tissue after 14 days of cold acclimation. In conclusion, high levels of uncoupling protein-messenger ribonucleic acid and cytochrom-c-oxidase activity in brown adipose tissue of cold-acclimated hamsters can partially be maintained without intact sympathetic innervation, suggesting a considerable contribution of trophic factors not requiring sympathetic innervation for maintenance. The cold-induced increase of cytochrom-c-oxidase activity and expression of uncoupling protein-messenger ribonucleic acid largely depends upon sympathetic innervation of brown adipose tissue.Abbreviations ANOVA
