Evidence exists that Cd and certain nutrient elements, such as Fe and Mg, could share similar mechanisms of plant uptake and accumulation. Here we report that Mg and Fe deficiency in mature plants of Salix viminalis, grown in hydroponic solutions containing 5 µg ml?1 of Cd, caused a significant increase in Cd accumulation in roots, stems and leaves. Cd (µg g?1 dry weight) was determined following three treatments: 1) Cd treatment in complete nutrient solution; 2) Cd treatment with Fe deficiency; and 3) Cd treatment with Mg deficiency, yielding, respectively: in young leaves (65.3, 76.1, and 92.2), mature leaves (51.5 to 76.3 and 87.1), upper stems (80.6, 116.8, and 130.6) lower stems (67.2, 119, and 102.3), roots (377.1, 744.8, and 442,5). Our results suggest that Cd utilizes the same uptake and transport pathways as Mg and Fe. Evidence exists that Mg and Fe uptake and translocation could be further facilitated by plants as an adaptive response to deficiency of these elements. Such physiological reaction could additionally stimulate Cd accumulation. Although Cd uptake was mostly confined in roots, high Cd content in aerial plant parts (51.5–130.6 µg g?1) indicates that the analysed Salix viminalis genotype is suitable for phytoextraction.  相似文献

The hydroxyl radical (OH) has detrimental biological activity due to its very high reactivity. Our experiments were designed to determine the effects of equimolar concentrations of glucose, fructose and mannitol and three phosphorylated forms of fructose (fructose-1-phosphate (F1P); fructose-6-phosphate (F6P); and fructose-1,6-bis(phosphate) (F16BP)) on OH radical production via the Fenton reaction. EPR spectroscopy using spin-trap DEPMPO was applied to detect radical production. We found that the percentage inhibition of OH radical formation decreased in the order F16BP > F1P > F6P > fructose > mannitol = glucose. As ketoses can sequester redox-active iron thus preventing the Fenton reaction, the Haber-Weiss-like system was also employed to generate OH, so that the effect of iron sequestration could be distinguished from direct OH radical scavenging. In the latter system, the rank order of OH scavenging activity was F16BP > F1P > F6P > fructose = mannitol = glucose. Our results clearly demonstrate that intracellular phosphorylated forms of fructose have more scavenging properties than fructose or glucose, leading us to conclude that the acute administration of fructose could overcome the body’s reaction to exogenous antioxidants during appropriate therapy in certain pathophysiological conditions related to oxidative stress, such as sepsis, neurodegenerative diseases, atherosclerosis, malignancy, and some complications of pregnancy.  相似文献

Huchen Hucho hucho from the Drina River (Serbia) revealed recently the decrease in breakpoint values for both standard length (Sl) and weight (w) in relation to the values recorded in 1999 from 110 cm to 98.4 cm and from 16.5 kg to 10.5 kg, respectively. The ability of plant lectins to modify the interactions of the insulin receptor (IR) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) receptors (IGFRs) with their ligands was investigated. The lectins profoundly affected the competition-binding curves for (125)I-labelled IGF-I and insulin, causing an increase in the affinity of placental IGF1R and IR towards their ligands. This increment was of such a magnitude that it could affect the receptors' specificity towards these ligands. The lower the ligand concentration, the greater was the lectin-induced affinity shift, which suggests potential physiological significance of the effect. The affinity modulation occurred in a lectin-specific and dose-dependent manner. In contrast to IGF1R and IR, the binding of (125)I-labelled IGF-II to its receptors resisted lectin modulation. Here we provide evidence of the possibility of external modulation of the affinity of placental IGF1R and IR via interactions of the receptors' carbohydrate moieties with lectins. The existence of modulators that would selectively inhibit or enhance the binding of IGFs or insulin to their corresponding receptors may have important implications for placental cell responses to these molecules.  相似文献

Very frequently biological databases are used for analysing distribution of different taxa. These databases are usually the result of variable sampling effort and location uncertainty. The aim of this study was to test the influence of geographically biased sampling effort and spatial uncertainty of locations on models of species richness. For this purpose, we assessed the pattern of invasive alien plants in Croatia using the Flora Croatica Database. The procedure applied in testing of the sensitivity of models consisted of sample area sectioning into coherent ecological classes (hereinafter Gower classes). The quadrants were then ranked based on sampling effort per class. This resulted in creation of models using varying numbers of quadrants whose performance was tested with independent validation points. From this the best fitting model was determined, as well as a threshold of sampling effort. The data from quadrants with sampling effort below the threshold were considered too unreliable for modelling. Further, spatial uncertainty was simulated by adding a random term to each location and re-running the models using the simulated locations. Biased sampling effort and spatial uncertainty of locations had similar effects on model performance in terms of the magnitude of the affected area, as in both cases 7% of the quadrants showed statistically significant deviations in alien plant species richness. The model using only on the quandrants with the highest 35% quantile sampling effort best balanced the sampling effort per quadrant and overall geographical coverage. It predicted a mean number of 3.2 invasive alien plant species per quadrant for the Alpine region, 5.2 for the Continental, 6.1 for the Mediterranean and 5.3 for the Pannonian region of Croatia. Thus, the observational databases can be considered as a reliable source for species richness models and, most likely, for other types of species distribution models, given that their limitations are accounted for in the data selection process. In order to obtain precise estimates of species richness it is required to sample the whole range of ecological conditions of the study area.  相似文献

The composition of the essential oil of the twigs and needles of Taxus baccata L. from three natural populations in Serbia has been determined by GC/MS analysis. Of the 91 detected compounds, 87 were identified. The most abundant compound classes were aliphatic alcohols, terpenes, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and aliphatic aldehydes, which together comprised ca. 86.92% of the total oil composition. The dominant constituents were oct‐1‐en‐3‐ol (23.48%), (3Z)‐hex‐3‐en‐1‐ol (11.46%; aliphatic alcohols), and myrtenol (11.38%; oxygenated monoterpene). The PCA of 22 selected compounds revealed differentiations of populations based on geographic distribution. The CA showed that Populations I and II from the Dinaric Alps were similar, and that Population III from the Balkan mountain system was distinct. This was the first investigation of interpopulation variability of Tbaccata populations based on essential oil composition. The results of this study were compared with those of previous studies concerning volatile compounds produced by Taxus species. The results indicate that the essential oil content of Tbaccata populations from this study is unique, mostly resembling the population from southeast Serbia.  相似文献
