The Falkland Islands wolf Dusicyon australis is an extinct canid that was once the only endemic terrestrial mammal to inhabit the Falkland Islands. There is still a puzzling picture of the morphological adaptations of this wolf that quickly evolved from its mainland fossil ancestor: Dusicyon avus. We employ a geometric morphometric approach to identify patterns of skull shape variation in extant canids and Dusicyon spp. The Falkland Islands wolf and its fossil ancestor show a more carnivorous feeding morphology than other South American foxes, and they cluster morphologically with jackals. This supports convergence in skull shape between Dusicyon and Old World canids, although the convergence is not as strong as that exhibited by their sister hyper‐ and hypocarnivorous taxa.  相似文献

Trypanosoma cruzi infection was studied in 1,298 sera samples of blood banks from 7 capital departments of Bolivia, using the immunofluorescence test (IFI) and Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The percentages of positivity in these 7 departments have an average of 28% and are distributed as follows: Sta. Cruz 51%, Tarija 45%, Cochabamba 28%, Sucre 39%, La Paz 4.9%, Oruro 6% and Potosi 24%. The prevalence is related with the altitude levels of the different departments. However in Potosi (3,945 m) we found a 24% of prevalence, probably due to the proximity of endemic valleys to the city. The authors suggest a strict control in blood donors since there exists a great risk of infection.  相似文献

Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 grew on 0.5% (v/v) hexadecane as a sole carbon source in a chemically defined medium which required the addition of Fe3+ and Ca2+. There was a variable and extended lag period before an active growth rate was attained. Visible light microscopic evidence revealed that the bacteria did not adhere to hexadecane droplets suggesting the absence of a bioemulsifier. When compared with glucose-grown cells, hexadecane-grown cells produced 75% less lipopolysaccharide (on a total protein basis); this lipopolysaccharide contained 30-40% less carbohydrate, yet 50-75% more 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate. These chemical changes made the cell surface appear more hydrophobic when tested in a biphasic hydrophobicity index system. Electron microscopy of thin sections and freeze etchings revealed hexadecane-grown cells contained granules which were judged to be polyphosphate by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. There was no apparent major morphological envelope alteration within the two cell types.  相似文献

Age‐related changes are usually overlooked in perennial grass research; when they are considered it is usually as a change in plant size (e.g., biomass). Whether other physiological or developmental aspects change as stands age, and how those aspects may impact long‐term stand dynamics, remains unclear. Conventional experimental designs study a single stand over multiple growing seasons and thereby confound age‐related changes with growing season conditions. Here we used a staggered‐start experimental design with three repeated planting years over two growing seasons to isolate growing season effects. We studied changes in Miscanthus × giganteus phenology during its yield‐building stage (first 3 years) and estimated age, growing season and nitrogen (N) effects on development using nonlinear regression parameters. Stand age clearly changed plant growth; faster developmental rates were usually seen in 1‐year‐old stands (young), but because 2‐ and 3‐year‐old stands (mature) emerged 3 months earlier than newly planted stands they produced 30% more stems with 30%–60% more leaves. Nitrogen fertilization modulated some age‐related phenological changes. Fertilized 2‐year‐old stands reached similar stem densities as unfertilized 3‐year‐old stands and had fewer number of senesced leaves like 1‐year‐old stands. In addition, N fertilization had no effect on young M. × giganteus, but extended mature stands’ growing season more than 2 weeks by hastening emergence and delaying senescence. It also delayed flowering regardless of stand age. Our results suggest that, along with changes in size, M. × giganteus stands showed shifts in developmental strategies: young stands emerged later and developed faster, while mature stands grew for longer but more slowly. In temperate regions, where hard frost events are likely to interrupt development in late autumn, rapid early development is critical to plant survival. Nonlinear regression parameter differences proved effective in identifying phenological shifts.  相似文献

This study describes the application of the multivariate curve resolution (MCR) analysis technique for real-time analysis of culture fluorescence during recombinant Pichia pastoris cultivation in a bioreactor. Fluorescence spectra were acquired with an on-line dual excitation wavelength fluorometer and then used to develop a real time MCR-based bioprocess monitoring and diagnostics tool. Initial bioreactor experiments using two similar recombinant antibody secreting P. pastoris cell lines showed significant differences in protein production. To distinguish between the contributions of operating conditions and the specific cell line's genetic composition to the observed differences in protein production, the bioreactor experiments were repeated and accompanied by real time MCR analysis. The tests demonstrated high sensitivity of MCR-derived “pure concentration” profiles to growth as well as to initial conditions, thus enabling real-time cultivation process trend diagnostics and fault detection. © 2018 Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol.
