Host-microorganism interactions in the intestinal tract are complex, and little is known about specific nonpathogenic microbial factors triggering host responses in the gut. In this study, mannose-specific interactions of Lactobacillus plantarum 299v with jejunal epithelium were investigated using an in situ pig Small Intestinal Segment Perfusion model. The effects of L. plantarum 299v wild-type strain were compared with those of two corresponding mutant strains either lacking the gene encoding for the mannose-specific adhesin (msa) or sortase (srtA; responsible for anchoring of cell surface proteins like Msa to the cell wall). A slight enrichment of the wild-type strain associated with the intestinal surface could be observed after 8 h of perfusion when a mixture of wild-type and msa-mutant strain had been applied. In contrast to the mutant strains, the L. plantarum wild-type strain tended to induce a decrease in jejunal net fluid absorption compared with control conditions. Furthermore, after 8 h of perfusion expression of the host gene encoding pancreatitis-associated protein, a protein with proposed bactericidal properties, was found to be upregulated by the wild-type strain only. The consequences of uncertainties in land use, climate and vegetation responses on the terrestrial carbon 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The IPCC SRES narratives were implemented in IMAGE 2.2 to evaluate thefuture condition of the climate system (including the biosphere). A series of scenario experiments was used to assess possible ranges in emissions and concentrations of greenhouse gases, climate change and impacts. These experiments focussed on the role of the terrestrial carbon cycle. The experiments show that the SRES narratives dominate human emissions and not natural processes. In contrary, atmospheric CO2 concentration strongly differs between the experiments. Atmospheric CO2 concentrations range for A1B from 714 to 1009 ppmv CO2 in 2100. The spread of this range is comparable with the full SRES range as implemented in IMAGE 2.2 (515-895 μmol/mol CO2). The most important negative and positive feedback processes in IMAGE 2.2 on the build-up of CO2 concentrations are CO2 fertilisation and soil respiration respectively. Indirect effects of these processes furtherchange land-use patterns, deforestation rates and alter the natural C fluxes. The cumulative effects of these changes have a pronounced influence on the final CO2 concentrations. Our scenario experiments highlight the importance of a proper parameterisation of feedback processes, C-cycle and land use in determining the future states of the climate system. 相似文献

The micropylar exudate of Gasteria verrucosa (Mill.) H. Duval was studied using light and electron microscopic techniques. Ovules may contain micropylar exudate before stigma receptivity. During successive phases of stigma receptivity, the number of ovules with micropylar exudate and the amount of micropylar exudate per ovule increases. At the late phase of stigma receptivity, large amounts of micropylar exudate with a smooth to cauliflowerlike appearance were observed. Micropylar exudate is viscous and contains, among other components, proteins and carbohydrates. At all stages of the stigma investigated, ovules situated at the base of the ovary contain a larger quantity of micropylar exudate than those at the top. The appearance of micropylar exudate is related to the degree of development of the embryo sac and it originates primarily from the filiform apparatus. It is assumed that an uptake of water by the ovule initiates the outflow of micropylar exudate from the filiform apparatus into the micropyle. Both ovular pollen tube ingrowth and seed set mark the optimum pollination stage of the stigma, which for both events lies around the onset of stigma receptivity. When pollen tubes have reached the ovary, young micropylar exudate stimulates their growth rate. The presence of micropylar exudate seems to be a requirement for pollen tube penetration, and an interaction between the pollen tube and the micropylar exudate has been proposed. Possibly, the micropylar exudate serves as a nutritional source and, in an optimum condition, as an attractant for approaching pollen tubes. 相似文献

Flowers, the reproductive structures of the approximately 400 000 extant species of flowering plants, exist in a tremendous range of forms and sizes, mainly due to developmental differences involving the number, arrangement, size and form of the floral organs of which they consist. However, this tremendous diversity is underpinned by a surprisingly robust basic floral structure in which a central group of carpels forms on an axis of determinate growth, almost invariably surrounded by two successive zones containing stamens and perianth organs, respectively. Over the last 25 years, remarkable progress has been achieved in describing the molecular mechanisms that control almost all aspects of flower development, from the phase change that initiates flowering to the final production of fruits and seeds. However, this work has been performed almost exclusively in a small number of eudicot model species, chief among which is Arabidopsis thaliana. Studies of flower development must now be extended to a much wider phylogenetic range of flowering plants and, indeed, to their closest living relatives, the gymnosperms. Studies of further, more wide-ranging models should provide insights that, for various reasons, cannot be obtained by studying the major existing models alone. The use of further models should also help to explain how the first flowering plants evolved from an unknown, although presumably gymnosperm-like ancestor, and rapidly diversified to become the largest major plant group and to dominate the terrestrial flora. The benefits for society of a thorough understanding of flower development are self-evident, as human life depends to a large extent on flowering plants and on the fruits and seeds they produce. In this preface to the Special Issue, we introduce eleven articles on flower development, representing work in both established and further models, including gymnosperms. We also present some of our own views on current trends and future directions of the flower development field. 相似文献
