Calculation of effective diffusivities for biofilms and tissues.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In this study we describe a scheme for numerically calculating the effective diffusivity of cellular systems such as biofilms and tissues. This work extends previous studies in which we developed the macroscale representations of the transport equations for cellular systems based on the subcellular-scale transport and reaction processes. A finite-difference model is used to predict the effective diffusivity of a cellular system on the basis of the subcellular-scale geometry and transport parameters. The effective diffusivity is predicted for a complex three-dimensional structure that is based on laboratory observations of a biofilm, and these numerical predictions are compared with predictions from a simple analytical solution and with experimental data. Our results indicate that, under many practical circumstances, the simple analytical solution can be used to provide reasonable estimates of the effective diffusivity.  相似文献

Δ7-5-Desaturase catalyses one of the last steps in ergosterol biosynthesis in fungi. Moreover Δ5-unsaturation is necessary for the sparking function. Synthesis of three pairs of C-6 epimeric cholestanol derivatives are described as potential growth inhibitors. The effects on olfaction of N-ethylmaleimide (NEM), a specificreagent of free sulfhydryl groups, were studied in the mothMamestra brassicae. The antennae of male M.brassicae bear twotypes of specialist receptor neurons involved in pheromone communication.One type is tuned to (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:Ac),the main pheromone component; the second type is tuned to (Z)-9-tetradecenylacetate (Z9-14:Ac), an interspecific inhibitor not producedby the females of this species. Vapours of NEM irreversiblyinhibited the electro-antennographic (EAG) responses to Z11-16:Acand Z9-14:Ac. When Zll-16:Ac was applied before and during NEMtreatment, the responses to Z9-14:Ac were preserved and someprotection was observed in the responses to Zll-16:Ac. In return,Z9-14:Ac partially prevented the disappearance of responsesto Zll-16:Ac but not to Z9-14:Ac. A third compound, hexadecylacetate (16:Ac), found in the pheromone gland, but not detectedby the antennal receptors, did not prevent the inhibition causedby NEM.  相似文献

We isolated a Zea mays cDNA encoding the 40S subunit cytoplasmic ribosomal protein S11. The nucleotide sequence was determined and the derived amino acid sequence compared to the corresponding Arabidopsis thaliana protein showing an homology of 90%. This ribosomal protein is encoded by a small multigene family of at least two members. The mRNA steady-state level is about one order of magnitude higher in rapidly growing parts of the plant such as the roots and shoots of seedlings compared to fully expanded leaf tissue.  相似文献

Horseradish peroxidase was chemically conjugated on its carbohydrate moieties with short aliphatic chains (C8 and C16). An analytical method using FT.IR spectroscopy was developed to analyze this alteration in enzyme structure. This method is non-destructive, and can be applied directly to samples of the reaction mixture. More general applications of this technique are described and discussed.  相似文献

A field isolate of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans was grown in defined medium in a two-stage continuous culture apparatus with different concentrations of phosphate in the feed medium. The first state (V1) was operated as a conventional chemostat (D = 0.045 h−1) that was limited in energy source (lactate) or phosphate. The second stage (V2) received effluent from V1 but no additional nutrients, and contained a healthy population of transiently starved or resting cells. An increase in the concentration of phosphate in the medium fed to V1 resulted in increased corrosion rates of carbon steel in both V1 and V2. Despite the more rapid corrosion observed in growing cultures relative to that in resting cultures, corrosion products that were isolated under strictly anaerobic conditions from the two culture modes had similar bulk compositions which varied with the phosphate content of the medium. Crystalline mackinawite (Fe9S8), vivianite [Fe3(PO4)2 · 8H2O], and goethite [FeO(OH)] were detected in amounts which varied with the culture conditions. Chemical analyses indicated that the S in the corrosion product was almost exclusively in the form of sulfides, while the P was present both as phosphate and as unidentified components, possibly reduced P species. Some differential localization of S and P was observed in intact corrosion products. Cells from lactate-limited, but not from phosphate-limited, cultures contained intracellular granules that were enriched in P and Fe. The results are discussed in terms of several proposed mechanisms of microbiologically influenced corrosion.  相似文献

Electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis was performed in three human divers studied at 21 and 23.5 ATA while they breathed various gas mixtures containing H2 and/or He (COMEX HYDRA IX experiment) and in five dogs exposed to 91 ATA of He-O2 or He-N2-O2. In all cases, the O2 partial pressure was slightly higher than its physiological value. These human and animal studies reveal that elevated pressure of different inert gases did not change the resting heart rate or its respiratory fluctuation. However, the T wave amplitude increased in proportion to the gas density in the three divers; this was also found in four of the five dogs studied. Changes in peak T wave configurations were also observed in the dog experiments. Positional changes in QRS or T vectors cannot explain these T wave changes.  相似文献
