1. Territoriality is commonly associated with resource defence polygyny, where males are expected to gain access to females by anticipating how resources will influence female distribution and competing for resource-rich sites to establish their zone of dominance. 2. We tested this hypothesis in European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) by simultaneously assessing the influence of resources on female distribution and the influence of female distribution on male distribution and breeding success using paternity analyses. 3. Females did not fully distribute themselves among male territories in relation to resources. As a result, relative female abundance in a male's territory depended on territory size, but not on its habitat quality. In turn, relative female abundance in a male's territory determined, at least partially, his breeding success. 4. Interestingly, male territory size, and hence access to females, was partly determined by male body mass (all males) and by residual antler size (subadults only). The latter result suggests that large antlers may be important to young males for establishing their first territory, which is then usually retained for all subsequent reproductive seasons. 5. To conclude, although territoriality of male roe deer has certainly evolved as a tactic for ensuring access to mates, our results suggest that it does not really conform to a conventional resource defence polygyny strategy, as males seem to gain no obvious benefit from defending a territory in an area of high habitat quality in terms of enhanced access to mates. 6. This may explain the stability of male territories between years, suggesting that male territoriality conforms to an 'always stay' and 'low risk-low gain' mating strategy in roe deer. 相似文献

Circoviruses are highly prevalent porcine and avian pathogens. In recent years, novel circular ssDNA genomes have recently been detected in a variety of fecal and environmental samples using deep sequencing approaches. In this study the identification of genomes of novel circoviruses and cycloviruses in feces of insectivorous bats is reported. Pan-reactive primers were used targeting the conserved rep region of circoviruses and cycloviruses to screen DNA bat fecal samples. Using this approach, partial rep sequences were detected which formed five phylogenetic groups distributed among the Circovirus and the recently proposed Cyclovirus genera of the Circoviridae. Further analysis using inverse PCR and Sanger sequencing led to the characterization of four new putative members of the family Circoviridae with genome size ranging from 1,608 to 1,790 nt, two inversely arranged ORFs, and canonical nonamer sequences atop a stem loop. 相似文献

Though predation, productivity (nutrient richness), spatial heterogeneity, and disturbance regimes are known to influence species diversity, interactions between these factors remain largely unknown. Predation has been shown to interact with productivity and with spatial heterogeneity, but few experimental studies have focused on how predation and disturbance interact to influence prey diversity. We used theory and experiments to investigate how these factors influence diversification of Pseudomonas fluorescens by manipulating both predation (presence or absence of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus) and disturbance (frequency and intensity of disturbance). Our results show that in a homogeneous environment, predation is essential to promote prey species diversity. However, in most but not all treatments, elevated diversity was transitory, implying that the effect of predation on diversity was strongly influenced by disturbance. Both our experimental and theoretical results suggest that disturbance interacts with predation by modifying the interplay of resource and apparent competition among prey. 相似文献

In a previous report, we described a PCR protocol for the differentiation of the various species of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) on the basis of genomic deletions (R. C. Huard, L. C. de Oliveira Lazzarini, W. R. Butler, D. van Soolingen, and J. L. Ho, J. Clin. Microbiol. 41:1637-1650, 2003). That report also provided a broad cross-comparison of several previously identified, phylogenetically relevant, long-sequence and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (LSPs and SNPs, respectively). In the present companion report, we expand upon the previous work (i) by continuing the evaluation of known MTC phylogenetic markers in a larger collection of tubercle bacilli (n = 125), (ii) by evaluating additional recently reported MTC species-specific and interspecific polymorphisms, and (iii) by describing the identification and distribution of a number of novel LSPs and SNPs. Notably, new genomic deletions were found in various Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains, new species-specific SNPs were identified for "Mycobacterium canettii," Mycobacterium microti, and Mycobacterium pinnipedii, and, for the first time, intraspecific single-nucleotide DNA differences were discovered for the dassie bacillus, the oryx bacillus, and the two Mycobacterium africanum subtype I variants. Surprisingly, coincident polymorphisms linked one M. africanum subtype I genotype with the dassie bacillus and M. microti with M. pinnipedii, thereby suggesting closer evolutionary ties within each pair of species than had been previously thought. Through a still unclear mechanism, pemphigus vulgaris autoantibodies (PV-IgG) induce intra-epidermal acantholytic lesions responsible for severe to fatal skin wounding. We present evidence that PV lesions contain apoptotic keratinocytes, and that cell death is induced in the lesional tissue apparently before cell separation. These data suggest that apoptosis could be the cause of the acantholytic phenomenon. We show that PV-IgG and an antibody against Fas receptor (anti-FasR) induce lesions in vitro in a similar way, causing: (1) secretion of soluble FasL; (2) elevated cellular amounts of FasR, FasL (soluble and membranal), Bax and p53 proteins; (3) reduction in levels of cellular Bcl-2; (4) enrichment in caspase 8, and activation of caspases 1 and 3; (5) co-aggregation of FasL and FasR with caspase 8 in membranal death-inducing signaling complex (DISC). Hence, the Fas-mediated death signaling pathway seems to be involved in lesion formation. Moreover, we have shown that in skin organ cultures and in keratinocyte cultures, PV-IgG can induce caspase activation and DNA fragmentation, and caspase inhibitors can prevent the formation of PV-IgG-induced epidermal lesions. Altogether, these results suggest that PV-IgG-induced acantholysis may proceed through the death-signaling pathway. They highlight new perspectives on mechanisms of tissue damage in autoimmune diseases. 相似文献

7-Oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane analogs of prostaglandin (PG) H2 can act as thromboxane (Tx) A2 receptor antagonists or agonists, PGI2 and/or PGD2 receptor agonists, or exhibit a mixture of the above activities. SQ 28,852, a new analog with a hexyloxymethyl omega side chain, is a potent inhibitor of PG synthesis. SQ 28,852 inhibited collagen and arachidonic acid (AA)-induced platelet aggregation and TxB2 and PGE2 formation, but did not block platelet aggregation induced by ADP or the TxA2 mimics, 9,11-azo PGH2, SQ 26,655, and U-46,619. It also blocked conversion of AA to TxB2, PGE2, and 6-keto PGF1 alpha by microsomal preparations of human platelets, bovine seminal vesicles, and bovine aortas, respectively, but did not inhibit the conversion of PGH2 to TxA2 by the platelet microsomal preparation. SQ 28,852 (p.o.) protected mice against the lethal effects of AA (75 mg/kg, i.v.). The I50 values for SQ 28,852, indomethacin and aspirin were 0.025, 0.05 and 15 mg/kg, respectively. Neither SQ 28,852 nor indomethacin protected mice from death caused by 9,11-azo PGH2. SQ 28,852 (0.01 to 1 mg/kg, i.v.) inhibited AA-induced bronchoconstriction in anesthetized guinea pigs for at least 60 min. As an inhibitor of AA-induced bronchoconstriction, SQ 28,852 was 16- and 45-times more potent than indomethacin at 3 and 60 min after i.v. administration, respectively. SQ 28,852 did not inhibit bronchoconstriction induced by histamine or 9,11-azo PGH2, indicating its specificity of action in vivo. SQ 28,852 is the first example of a new class of cyclooxygenase inhibitors whose structure is similar to that of the naturally occurring endoperoxide, PGH2. 相似文献

Optimized plant-microbe bioremediation processes in which the plant initiates the metabolism of xenobiotics and releases the metabolites in the rhizosphere to be further degraded by the rhizobacteria is a promising alternative to restore contaminated sites in situ. However, such processes require that plants produce the metabolites that bacteria can readily oxidize. The biphenyl dioxygenase is the first enzyme of the bacterial catabolic pathway involved in the degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls. This enzyme consists of three components: the two sub-unit oxygenase (BphAE) containing a Rieske-type iron-sulfur cluster and a mononuclear iron center, the Rieske-type ferredoxin (BphF), and the FAD-containing ferredoxin reductase (BphG). In this work, based on analyses with Nicotiana benthamiana plants transiently expressing the biphenyl dioxygenase genes from Burkholderia xenovorans LB400 and transgenic Nicotiana tabacum plants transformed with each of these four genes, we have shown that each of the three biphenyl dioxygenase components can be produced individually as active protein in tobacco plants. Therefore, when BphAE, BphF, and BphG purified from plant were used to catalyze the oxygenation of 4-chlorobiphenyl, detectable amounts of 2,3-dihydro-2, 3-dihydroxy-4'-chlorobiphenyl were produced. This suggests that creating transgenic plants expressing simultaneously all four genes required to produce active biphenyl dioxygenase is feasible. 相似文献

Cell corpses generated during CNS development are eliminated through phagocytosis performed by a variety of cells, including mesenchyme-derived macrophages and microglia, or glial cells originating in the neurogenic ectoderm. Mounting evidence indicates that in different species, phagocytes not only clear cell corpses but also engulf still-living neural cells or axons, and thereby promote cell death or axon pruning. Knowledge of the mechanisms of corpse recognition by engulfing cells provides molecular signals to this new role for phagocytes. These observations support a conserved and instructive role for phagocytosis in the execution of regressive events during neurogenesis. 相似文献
