Outbreak of Mycobacterium marinum infection among captive snakes and bullfrogs

Since 1985 mycobacterial infection has been observed occasionally among snakes and bullfrogs housed in the Wisconsin exhibit at the Milwaukee Zoo. Prospective screening of animals was initiated in September 1990, after two cases occurred in March and June 1990. Overall, of 47 animals that were housed in the exhibit from 1981 through its closure in 1995, 15 (31.9%) were diagnosed with mycobacterial infection. That includes 10 cases (of 24 animals; 40% prevalence) that occurred during the final 5 years, when all animals were actively being screened for infection. Infection was documented by culture for seven animals, histology for four animals, and both histology and culture for four animals. Species determination of nine of the 10 isolates revealed Mycobacterium marinum. Genetic fingerprinting of the eight available isolates using pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) showed that six animals (five snakes and one bullfrog) were infected with the same strain of M. marinum (strain A) and two snakes were infected with a second strain (strain B). Deaths of animals infected with strain A spanned 1992–1995, and for strain B 1990–1992. It is postulated that possible routes of transmission were inhalation of infected aerosols or ingestion of contaminated food, water, or fomites. These data suggest that in closed systems the presence of mycobacterial infection in one animal significantly increases the risk of infection for all animals. Phylogenetic position of the Hawaiian geraniums based on rbcL Sequences

The seven currently recognized species of Geranium endemic to the Hawaiian Islands are unusual in their shrubby or arborescent habit and unlobed, parallel-veined leaves rather than the palmately cleft or lobed leaves and herbaceous habit typical of the genus. Their placement within the genus and their biogeographic source have been obscured by this morphological distictiveness and the limited resolution of relationships on the basis of morphology in the very speciose subgenus Geranium. Phylogenetic analysis of rbcL gene sequences provides strong support for the monophyly of the Hawaiian group, and indicates that the Hawaiian clade is deeply nested within section Geranium rather than comprising a separate section. The continental relatives studied to date with the greatest similarity in sequence to the Hawaiian group are native to the Americas rather than Asia or the Pacific. The Hawaiian species are extremely similar to one another in rbcL sequence, while the tree topology obtained is consistent with a basal position for Geranium arboreum within the group.     

Ribosome Maturation of Escherichia coli Growing at Different Growth Rates

The data reported here are consistent with the hypothesis that the rate of ribosome assembly in vivo approximates a constant fraction of the generation time for the four rates studied. This conclusion is indicated by the following. (i) There is an increased lag period before radioisotopically labeled uracil appears in 23 and 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid of 70S ribosomes as a function of growth rate. (ii) The time necessary for (3)H-uracil in the 43S ribonucleoprotein precursor to the 50S subunit to assume a position at 50S in sucrose gradients is greatly increased inversely to the growth rate.     

The ultrastructure of inclusions inVinca nuclei

Summary An electron microscopic study of leaf and petal mesophyll tissue ofVinca rosea revealed the presence of nuclear inclusions. The inclusions were found to be tubular with an outside diameter of about 100 Å. The tubular inclusions inVinca appear to be similar to those that have been described in nuclei of other plants.
