Leaf litter breakdown rates in boreal streams: does shredder species richness matter? 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
1. Leaf litter breakdown rates were assessed in 23 boreal streams of varying size (first–seventh order) in central and northern Sweden. 2. Shredders were most abundant in small streams, while shredder species richness showed a hump-shaped relationship with stream order, with most species in fourth order streams. 3. In a partial least-squares regression analysis, year, water temperature, shredder species richness and shredder abundance were those factors correlating most strongly with leaf breakdown rates. Shredder species richness was more strongly correlated with leaf litter breakdown rates than shredder abundance, and shredder biomass showed no such correlation. 4. These data suggest that shredder species richness is an important variable in terms of leaf litter dynamics in streams. 相似文献

The reactivity of genistein toward reactive radical species has been investigated by means of pulse radiolysis. The values of rate constants, respectively 2.3 x 10(10) M(-1)s(-1) and 1.3 x 10(10) M(-1)s(-1) for the reaction with hydroxyl radical at pH 8.3 and 3.0, are close to diffusion limit indicating that genistein is a potent hydroxyl radical scavenger. The reactivity of genistein towards one-electron oxidants has also been investigated. The rate constants k = 4.6 x 10(9) M(-1)s(-1) (pH 8.3) and 6.7 x 10(8) M(-1)s(-1) (pH 7.6) have been determined for the reaction of genistein with *N3 and Br2*- radicals, respectively. For both oxidants the rate constants at pH 3 does not exceed 10(8) M(-1)s(-1). The differences in reactivity of genistein towards the oxidants at different acidity of the solution have been assumed to arise from the acid-base equilibria of genistein. The dissociation constants for genistein (pKa: 7.2, 10.0, and 13.1) have been evaluated spectroscopically. The influence of acid-base equilibria on bond dissociation energy and ionization potential for genistein has also been investigated by means of DFT calculations. It has been concluded on the basis of these calculations that monoanionic form of genistein existing at physiological pH is more powerful radical scavenger than the neutral molecule. 相似文献

Aim To compare the ability of island biogeography theory, niche theory and species–energy theory to explain patterns of species richness and density for breeding bird communities across islands with contrasting characteristics. Location Thirty forested islands in two freshwater lakes in the boreal forest zone of northern Sweden (65°55′ N to 66°09′ N; 17°43′ E to 17°55′ E). Methods We performed bird censuses on 30 lake islands that have each previously been well characterized in terms of size, isolation, habitat heterogeneity (plant diversity and forest age), net primary productivity (NPP), and invertebrate prey abundance. To test the relative abilities of island biogeography theory, niche theory and species–energy theory to describe bird community patterns, we used both traditional statistical approaches (linear and multiple regressions) and structural equation modelling (SEM; in which both direct and indirect influences can be quantified). Results Using regression‐based approaches, area and bird abundance were the two most important predictors of bird species richness. However, when the data were analysed by SEM, area was not found to exert a direct effect on bird species richness. Instead, terrestrial prey abundance was the strongest predictor of bird abundance, and bird abundance in combination with NPP was the best predictor of bird species richness. Area was only of indirect importance through its positive effect on terrestrial prey abundance, but habitat heterogeneity and spatial subsidies (emerging aquatic insects) also showed important indirect influences. Thus, our results provided the strongest support for species–energy theory. Main conclusions Our results suggest that, by using statistical approaches that allow for analyses of both direct and indirect influences, a seemingly direct influence of area on species richness can be explained by greater energy availability on larger islands. As such, animal community patterns that seem to be in line with island biogeography theory may be primarily driven by energy availability. Our results also point to the need to consider several aspects of habitat quality (e.g. heterogeneity, NPP, prey availability and spatial subsidies) for successful management of breeding bird diversity at local spatial scales and in fragmented or insular habitats. 相似文献

Question: Have past windstorm events influenced the structure and composition of mountain forests in the Tatra Mountains? Can severe and infrequent wind disturbances lead to dynamic coexistence of two tree species with different ecological requirements? Location: Subalpine mixed spruce‐larch forest at 1200‐1300 m a.s.l. in the Slovakian Tatra Mountains. A forested site affected by catastrophic large‐scale windthrow on 19 November 2004. Methods: Sixty‐seven spruce and 30 larch cross‐sections from the oldest cohorts were collected in a regular pattern in a 100‐ha plot. Tree‐ring series were analysed to reconstruct growth releases associated with past windthrows. A boundary‐line release criterion was applied to detect disturbance year. Spatial patterns of release signals were statistically detected with Mantel's test. We compared reconstructed years of disturbance events with historical records. Results: Releases in both species showed three main pulses. More than 85% showed major or moderate releases in 1865‐1879, 48% in 1915‐1924, and 25% in 1940‐1949. All of these disturbance events affected the whole 100‐ha area. Releases were spatially patterned in the first disturbances, but distributed randomly in the last. Releases co‐occurred in time with enhanced production of compression wood, suggesting disturbances were of wind origin. Reconstructed dates of windthrows were confirmed using historical data on storms. Conclusions: At least three windthrows of major and moderate severity took place in the last 150 years on southern slopes of the Tatra Mountains. This disturbance regime may contribute to coexistence of spruce and larch through differences in vulnerability and response to heavy windstorms. 相似文献

In this study, we present a multiparameter screening procedure for the identification of target-specific antibodies with prescribed properties. Based on B cell receptor gene repertoires from transgenic rats, yeast surface display libraries were generated, and high-affinity human antibodies were readily isolated. We demonstrate that specific desirable features, i.e., species’ cross-reactivity and a broad epitope coverage can be integrated into the screening procedure using high-throughput fluorescence-activated cell sorting. We show that the applied screening stringencies translate directly into binding properties of isolated human antibody variants. 相似文献

Most large rivers in northern Sweden are regulated to produce hydropower, with subsequent effects on flow dynamics and aquatic insect communities. Several studies have shown that aquatic and terrestrial systems are intimately connected via the export of emergent aquatic insects, but few have assessed how human modifications of aquatic habitats may influence this connection. We compared breeding success of the insectivorous Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca in near‐riparian upland forests along two regulated and two free‐flowing large rivers in northern Sweden over 3 years. The regulated rivers showed lower aquatic insect export to the surroundings, as a consequence of regulation‐induced loss of suitable aquatic insect habitats. Survival of Pied Flycatcher nestlings was 10–15% greater along the free‐flowing rivers. Females breeding near the free‐flowing rivers also started egg‐laying earlier and with greater synchrony than those at the regulated rivers, and showed a smaller decrease in weight during breeding than did females along the regulated rivers. However, there were no differences in occupation rate, clutch size or number of successfully hatched juveniles between regulated and free‐flowing rivers. As regulated rivers showed lower abundance of flying aquatic insects, which may also reduce the abundance of terrestrial invertebrate prey, regulation‐induced changes in the export of emergent aquatic insects may explain both directly and indirectly the observed reduction in Pied Flycatcher breeding success along regulated rivers. Large‐scale river regulation may therefore impair the breeding success of insectivorous birds through impacts on prey availability. 相似文献

There is evidence that nitric oxide (NO) formation in adult cardiomyocytes stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is not commensurate with iNOS levels. Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH(4)) is a key factor in the stabilization and NO production by iNOS homodimer. Thus we hypothesized that BH(4) is a limiting factor for NO production in adult cardiomyocytes in response to LPS and cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1, IFN-gamma alone, or mixed). It was verified that LPS and cytokines induced iNOS expression which did not translate into increased nitrite or [(14)C]citrulline production. This response coincided with defective BH(4) synthesis and low GTP cyclohydrolase activity. Furthermore, supplementation with BH(4) and ascorbate failed to increase iNOS activity. This effect was related to preferential accumulation of BH(2) rather than BH(4) in these cells. Uncoupled iNOS activity in stimulated cells was examined using mitochondrial aconitase activity as an endogenous marker of superoxide anion radical (O(2)(-)) formation, and found not to be significantly inhibited. 2-Hydroxyethidium also was not significantly increased. We conclude that adult cardiomyocytes are an unlikely source of NO and O(2)(-) in inflammatory conditions. This finding adds a new and unexpected layer of complexity to our understanding of the responses of the adult heart to inflammation. 相似文献

P-proteins are structural phloem proteins discussed to be involved in the rapid sealing of injured sieve elements. P-proteins are found in all dicotyledonous and some monocotyledonous plants, but additional crystalloid P-proteins, known as forisomes, have evolved solely in the Fabaceae. Both types are encoded by members of the sieve element occlusion (SEO) gene family, which comprises seven phylogenetic subgroups. The Fabaceae-specific subgroup 1 contains genes encoding forisome subunits in e.g. Medicago truncatula, Vicia faba, Dipteryx panamensis and Canavalia gladiata whereas basal subgroup 5 encodes P-proteins in Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) and Arabidopsis thaliana. The function of remaining subgroups is still unknown. We chose Glycine max (soybean) as a model to investigate SEO proteins representing different subgroups in one species. We isolated native P-proteins to determine the SEO protein composition and analyzed the expression pattern, localization and structure of the G. max SEO proteins representing five of the subgroups. We found that subgroup 1 GmSEO genes encode forisome subunits, a member of subgroup 5 encodes a non-forisome P-protein and subgroup 2 GmSEO genes encode the components of forisome tails, which are present in a restricted selection of Fabaceaen species. We therefore present the first molecular characterization of a Fabaceae non-forisome P-protein and the first evidence that forisome tails are encoded by a phylogenetically-distinct branch of the SEO gene family. 相似文献
