BackgroundVector control strategies typically rely on pesticides to target mosquitoes involved in enzootic and zoonotic transmission of West Nile virus (WNV). Nevertheless, increasing insecticide resistance and a desire to reduce pesticide usage provide the impetus for developing alternative strategies. Ivermectin (IVM), an antiparasitic drug which is widely used in human and veterinary medicine, is a potential alternative for targeted control because Culex mosquitoes experience increased mortality following ingestion of IVM in bloodmeals.Methodology/Principal findingsWe conducted a randomized field trial to investigate the impact of treating backyard chicken flocks with IVM in urban neighborhoods across Davis, California on mosquito populations and WNV transmission dynamics. We observed a significant reduction in WNV seroconversions in treated vs. untreated chickens, suggesting a reduction in WNV transmission intensity around treated flocks. We also detected a reduction in parity rates of Cx. tarsalis near treated vs. untreated flocks and increased mortality in wild mosquitoes following a bloodmeal on treated chickens (IVM serum concentration > 5ng/mL) vs. chickens with IVM serum concentrations < 5 ng/mL. However, we did not find a significant difference in abundance or infection prevalence in mosquitoes between treatment groups associated with the reductions in seroconversions. Mosquito immigration from surrounding larval habitat, relatively low WNV activity in the study area, and variable IVM serum concentrations likely contributed to uncertainty about the impact.Conclusions/SignificanceTaken together, our results point to a reduction in WNV transmission due to the impact of IVM on Culex mosquito populations and support the ongoing investigation of oral administration of IVM to wild birds for local control of WNV transmission, although further work is needed to optimize dosing and understand effects on entomological endpoints.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to dosimetrically compare three total body irradiation (TBI) techniques which can be delivered by a standard linear accelerator, and to deduce which one is preferable. Specifically, Extended Source to Surface Distance (SSD) Field-in-Field (FiF), Extended SSD Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), and Standard SSD VMAT TBI techniques were dosimetrically evaluated. Percent depth dose and dose profile measurements were made under treatment conditions for each specified technique. After having generated treatment plans with a treatment planning system (TPS), dose homogeneity and critical organ doses were investigated on a Rando phantom using radiochromic films and optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLDs). TBI dose of 12 Gy in six fractions was prescribed for each technique. The gamma index (5%/5 mm) was used for the analysis of radiochromic films. Passing rates for Extended SSD FiF, Extended SSD VMAT and Standard SSD VMAT techniques were found to be 90%, 87% and 94%, respectively. OSLD measurements were within?±?5% agreement with TPS calculations for the first two techniques whereas the agreement was found to be within?±?3% for the Standard SSD VMAT technique. TPS calculations demonstrated that mean lung doses in the first two techniques were around 8.5 Gy while it was kept around 7 Gy in Standard SSD VMAT. It is concluded that Standard SSD VMAT is superior in sparing the lung tissue while all three TBI techniques are feasible in clinical practice with acceptable dose homogeneity. In the absence of VMAT-based treatment planning, Extended SSD FiF would be a reasonable choice compared to other conventional techniques.

Alterations of serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) concentrations are commonly found in patients suffering from gastrointestinal infections and with hepatic, renal, cardiovascular, and malignant diseases. In this study, the serum Zn and Cu levels in 20 children with giardiasis and in 40 children with amebiasis were evaluated. The serum Zn levels showed a significant decrease when compared to controls (p<0.001). After metronidazole therapy, a significant increase in Zn levels was observed (p<0.001). There was no significant difference in serum Cu levels between patients and controls before therapy. Before therapy, the serum Cu/Zn ratio in children with either giardiasis or amebiasis was significantly higher than that of the control group. After therapy, the Cu/Zn ratio was found to be back to normal. There were no significant differences in serum Zn levels and Cu/Zn ratios between children with and without diarrhea and there was no significant difference in children with or without failure to thrive. We concluded that Zn deficiency and elevated Cu/Zn ratio could be acute-phase responses to parasitic infections in children with giardiasis or amebiasis and that a successful treatment of the primary disorder will lead to complete recovery. Further studies are in progress to confirm the benefit of Zn supplementation during the acute phase of the disease, particularly in zinc-deficient regions of the world, such as in the case of Turkey.  相似文献

AimsAlthough hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment following spinal cord injury (SCI) have been studied in terms of neurological function and tissue histology, there is a limited number studies on spinal cord tissue enzyme levels.Main methodsThe effect of HBO treatment in SCI was investigated by measuring superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and nitric oxide (NO) activity in the injured tissue. SCI was induced by applying an aneurysm clip extradurally at the level of T9-T11 vertebrae. Preoperative HBO (preopHBO) treatment was applied for 5 days and postoperative HBO (postopHBO) for 7 days.Key findingsIn the preopHBO group, a significant decrease was observed in NOS and NO compared to the SCI group. There was a decrease in SOD, NOS and NO in the postopHBO group when compared to the SCI group. In the pre–postHBO group SOD, GPx, NOS and NO decreased significantly. There was a decrease in SOD in postopHBO compared to preopHBO. In the prepostopHBO, SOD decreased significantly compared to that in the preopHBO group. The prepostopHBO presented a significant decrease in GPx compared to postopHBO (p < 0.05 for all parameters). No significant difference was observed for catalase for all groups. Significant improvement was found in BBB scores for both postopHBO and prepostHBO groups when compared to the SCI group (p < 0.05).SignificanceHBO treatment was found to be beneficial following SCI in terms of biochemical parameters and functional recovery in the postoperative period.  相似文献

Single and double plasmonic interfaces consisting of silver nanoparticles embedded in media with different dielectric constants including SiO2, SiNx, and Al:ZnO have been fabricated by a self-assembled dewetting technique and integrated to amorphous silicon films. Single plasmonic interfaces exhibit plasmonic resonances whose frequency is red-shifted with increasing particle size and with the thickness of a dielectric spacer layer. Double plasmonic interfaces consisting of two different particle sizes exhibit resonances consisting of double minima in the transmittance spectra. The optical extinction of a-Si:H deposited on these interfaces is broadened into the red indicating higher absorption and/or scattering at wavelengths higher than those typically absorbed by a-Si:H without plasmonic interfaces. While the photocurrent shows an overall decrease for the samples with the interfaces, significant enhancement of photocurrent is observed near the low-energy edge of the bandgap (600–700 nm). These results correlate well with the broadened extinction spectra of the interfaces and are interpreted in terms of enhanced absorption in that region.  相似文献

In addition to its well-known effects on parturition and lactation, oxytocin (OT) plays an important role in modulation of pain and nociceptive transmission. But, the mechanism of this effect is unclear. To address the possible role of OT on pain modulation at the peripheral level, the effects of OT on intracellular calcium levels ([Ca2+]i) in rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons were investigated by using an in vitro calcium imaging system. DRG neurons were grown in primary culture following enzymatic and mechanical dissociation of ganglia from 1- or 2-day-old neonatal Wistar rats. Using the fura-2-based calcium imaging technique, the effects of OT on [Ca2+]i and role of the protein kinase C (PKC)-mediated pathway in OT effect were assessed. OT caused a significant increase in basal levels of [Ca2+]i after application at the doses of 30 nM (n?=?34, p?<?0.01), 100 nM (n?=?41, p?<?0.001) and 300 nM (n?=?46, p?<?0.001). The stimulatory effect of OT (300 nM) on [Ca2+]i was persistent in Ca2+-free conditions (n?=?56, p?<?0.01). Chelerythrine chloride, a PKC inhibitor, significantly reduced the OT-induced increase in [Ca2+]i (n?=?28, p?<?0.001). We demonstrated that OT activates intracellular calcium signaling in cultured rat primary sensory neurons in a dose- and PKC-dependent mechanism. The finding of the role of OT in peripheral pain modification may serve as a novel target for the development of new pharmacological strategies for the management of pain.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria, red algae, and cryptomonad algae utilize phycobilin chromophores that are attached to phycobiliproteins to harvest solar energy. Heme oxygenase (HO) in these organisms catalyzes the first step in phycobilin formation through the conversion of heme to biliverdin IXα, CO, and iron. The Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 genome contains two open reading frames, ho1 (sll1184) and ho2 (sll1875), whose products have in vitro HO activity. We report that HO2, the protein encoded by ho2, was induced in the cells growing under a microaerobic atmosphere [0.2% (v/v) O2], whereas HO1 was constitutively expressed under both aerobic and microaerobic atmospheres. Light intensity did not have an effect on the expression of both the HOs. Cells, in which ho2 was disrupted, were unable to grow microaerobically at a light intensity of 40 μmol m−2 s−1, but did grow microaerobically at 10 μmol m−2 s−1 light intensity. These cells grew normally aerobically at both light intensities. Comparative analysis of complete cyanobacterial genomes revealed that possession of two HOs is common in cyanobacteria. In phylogenetic analysis of their amino acid sequences, cyanobacterial HO1 and HO2 homologs formed distinct clades. HO sequences of cyanobacteria that have only one isoform were most similar to HO1 sequences. We propose that HO2 might be the more ancient HO homolog that functioned under low O2 tension, whereas the derived HO1 can better accommodate increased O2 tension in the environment.  相似文献

Abstract

Purpose: Our study aimed to determine the possible differences in linear measurements and linear indices values of intracranial fluid spaces (IFS) between right- and left-handed adults.

Methods: This work has been carried out on 148 subjects (72 men and 76 women). In the study, 88 right-handers and 60 left-handers were included. Forty of the right-handers were male, 48 were female, and 32 of the left-handers were male, and 28 were female. The ages were between 20 and 50?years. Linear measurements were obtained based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. A 1.5-T MRI scanner was used to obtain axial images. The ten parameters were estimated from MRI scans.

Results: There was no correlation between parameters and age. In our study, interestingly, as can be seen from the tables, most of the parameters with statistically significant differences were higher in favour of left-handed subjects. In most of the linear measurement results, IFS values of the right hemisphere in right-handers, and the left hemisphere in left-handers were higher. Similar results were found in favour of the left-handed in most of the linear ventricular indices.

Conclusion: Linear measurements and linear indices values of IFS were mostly higher in left-handers than in right-handed individuals.  相似文献
