The lethal humidity (LH50) responses at 20°C of eggs of two strains of Neoseiulus fallacis (Garman) were 71.6 and 69.7%; of three strains of Amblyseius andersoni (Chant) were 62.9, 62.0 and 62.4% and of one strain each of Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten and Metaseiulus occidentalis Nesbitt were 55.0 and 28.4%, respectively. Eggs of three genetically distinct strains of A. andersoni from Oregon, the Netherlands and Italy did not respond differently from one another nor did eggs of freely hybridizing N. fallacis from Michigan and Oregon. Mortality of larvae through development to early protonymphs at 50% RH, 20°C. was 91.9, 82.3, 46.2 and 31.0% for fed mites and 98.1, 83.2, 67.0 and 89.7% for unfed mites of Oregon strains of N. fallacis, A. andersoni, T. pyri and M. occidentalis, repectively. Fed larvae-protonymphs of M. occidentalis and T. pyri were more tolerant of low humidity than fed larvae-protonymphs of N. fallacis and A. andersoni. Mortality was less for fed than unfed larvae-protonymphs of M. occidentalis and T. pyri, but there were no differences for A. andersoni and N. fallacis. Levels of feeding by predator larvae on T. urticae and cannibalism by phytoseiid protonymphs contributed to species differences. Responses to humidity are discussed in relation to geographic and host plant distributions and biological control by single or mixed species populations of phytoseiids.  相似文献

Fopius arisanus (Sonan) and Diachasmimorpha tryoni (Cameron) are two important solitary endoparasitoids of tephritid fruit flies. The former species attacks host eggs while the latter attacks host larvae, and both species emerge as adults from the host puparium. This study investigated intrinsic competition between these two parasitoids, as well as aspects of intraspecific competition within each species in the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Parasitization by F. arisanus resulted in direct mortality of host eggs and prolonged development of host eggs and larvae. Superparasitism by F. arisanus was uncommon when mean parasitism per host patch was <50%, but increased with rising rates of parasitism. Superparasitism by D. tryoni was more common. In superparasitized hosts, supernumerary individuals of F. arisanus were killed through physiological suppression, while supernumerary larvae of D. tryoni were killed mainly through physical attack. In multiparasitized hosts, dissections showed that 81.6% of D. tryoni eggs in the presence of F. arisanus larvae died within 3 days, indicating physiological inhibition of egg hatch. Rearing results further showed that F. arisanus won almost all competitions against D. tryoni. The ratio of D. tryoni stings to ovipositions was lower in hosts not previously parasitized by F. arisanus than in parasitized hosts, suggesting that D. tryoni can discriminate against parasitized hosts. The mechanism that F. arisanus employs to eliminate D. tryoni is similar to that it uses against all other larval fruit fly parasitoids so far reported. The results are discussed in relation to the competitive superiority of early acting species in fruit fly parasitoids, and to a possible competitive-mediated mechanism underlying host shift by D. tryoni to attack non-target flies following the successful introduction of F. arisanus in Hawaii.  相似文献

In dystrophic mice, a model of merosin-deficient congenital muscular dystrophy, laminin-2 mutations produce peripheral nerve dysmyelination and render Schwann cells unable to sort bundles of axons. The laminin receptor and the mechanism through which dysmyelination and impaired sorting occur are unknown. We describe mice in which Schwann cell-specific disruption of beta1 integrin, a component of laminin receptors, causes a severe neuropathy with impaired radial sorting of axons. beta 1-null Schwann cells populate nerves, proliferate, and survive normally, but do not extend or maintain normal processes around axons. Interestingly, some Schwann cells surpass this problem to form normal myelin, possibly due to the presence of other laminin receptors such as dystroglycan and alpha 6 beta 4 integrin. These data suggest that beta 1 integrin links laminin in the basal lamina to the cytoskeleton in order for Schwann cells to ensheath axons, and alteration of this linkage contributes to the peripheral neuropathy of congenital muscular dystrophy.  相似文献

Steady-state transposon mutagenesis in inbred maize   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
We implement a novel strategy for harnessing the power of high-copy transposons for functional analysis of the maize genome, and report behavioral features of the Mutator system in a uniform inbred background. The unique UniformMu population and database facilitate high-throughput molecular analysis of Mu-tagged mutants and gene knockouts. Key features of the population include: (i) high mutation frequencies (7% independent seed mutations) and moderation of copy number (approximately 57 total Mu elements; 1-2 MuDR copies per plant) were maintained by continuous back-crossing into a phenotypically uniform inbred background; (ii) a bz1-mum9 marker enabled selection of stable lines (loss of MuDR), inhibiting further transpositions in lines selected for molecular analysis; (iii) build-up of mutation load was prevented by screening Mu-active parents to exclude plants carrying pre-existing seed mutations. To create a database of genomic sequences flanking Mu insertions, selected mutant lines were analyzed by sequencing of MuTAIL PCR clone libraries. These sequences were annotated and clustered to facilitate bioinformatic subtraction of ancestral elements and identification of insertions unique to mutant lines. New insertions targeted low-copy, gene-rich sequences, and in silico mapping revealed a random distribution of insertions over the genome. Our results indicate that Mu populations differ markedly in the occurrence of Mu insertion hotspots and the frequency of suppressible mutations. We suggest that controlled MuDR copy number in UniformMu lines is a key determinant of these differences. The public database (http://uniformmu.org; http://endosperm.info) includes pedigree and phenotypic data for over 2000 independent seed mutants selected from a population of 31 548 F2 lines and integrated with analyses of 34 255 MuTAIL sequences.  相似文献

Competitive displacement of fruit fly parasitoids has been a serious issue in the history of fruit fly biological control in Hawaii. This concern regarding competitive risk of new parasitoids has led to an overall tightening of regulations against the use of classical biological control to manage fruit flies. Fopius arisanus (Sonan), an egg-larval parasitoid, is the most effective natural enemy of tephritid fruit flies in Hawaii. This study evaluated the competitive risk of two recently introduced larval parasitoids, Diachasmimorpha kraussii Fullaway and Psyttalia concolor (Szépligeti), to F. arisanus attacking the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Fopius arisanus won almost all intrinsic competitions against both larval parasitoids through physiological suppression of egg development. 83.3% of D. kraussii eggs and 80.2% of P. concolor eggs were killed within three days in the presence of F. arisanus larvae within the bodies of multi-parasitized hosts. The mechanism that F. arisanusemploys to eliminate both larval parasitoids is similar to that it uses against three other early established larval fruit fly parasitoids: F. vandenboschi (Fullaway), D. longicaudata (Ashmead) and D. tryoni (Cameron). It suggests that introduction of these larval parasitoids poses minimal competitive risk to F. arisanus in Hawaii.  相似文献
