The aim of this study was to examine the neurotoxicity of formaldehyde on prefrontal cortex and the protective effects of omega-3 essential fatty acids against these toxic effects. For this purpose, 21 male Wistar rats were divided into three groups. The rats in group I comprised the controls, while the rats in group II were injected every other day with formaldehyde (FA). The rats in group III received omega-3 fatty acids daily while exposed to formaldehyde. At the end of the 14-day experimental period, all rats were killed by decapitation. The brains of the rats were removed and the prefrontal cortex tissues were obtained from all brain specimens. Some of the prefrontal cortex tissue specimens were used for determination of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The remaining prefrontal cortex tissue specimens were used for light microscopic and immunohistochemical evaluation. The levels of SOD and GSH-Px were significantly decreased, and MDA levels were significantly increased in rats treated with formaldehyde compared with those of the controls. Furthermore, in the microscopic examination of this group, formation of apoptotic bodies, pycnotic cells, and apoptotic cells including nuclear fragmentation and membrane budding were observed. However, increased SOD and GSH-Px enzyme activities, and decreased MDA levels were detected in the rats administered omega-3 fatty acids while exposed to formaldehyde. Additionally, cellular damage caused by formaldehyde was decreased, and structural appearance was similar to that of the control rats in this group. The biochemical and histological findings observed in all groups were also confirmed by immunohistochemical evaluation. It was determined that formaldehyde-induced neuronal damage in prefrontal cortex was prevented by administration of omega-3 essential fatty acids. 相似文献

Heads of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were first biodegraded at 55 degrees C by their microflora. Biodegradation products of sunflower heads (BPSH) were analyzed. They were found to contain 9.77% dry matter, 3.98% total ash, 3.18% crude protein and 5.75% total organic matter. BOD load was determined as 4.80 g/100 g. Subsequently, the effects of BPSH at various concentrations (1.0%, 2.5%, 10% and 100%) on the seed germination and some growth parameters of Phaseolus vulgaris L., Cicer arietinum L. and Triticum vulgare L. were investigated. The percentages of seed germination and germination index of seeds were similar between the control and 1.0% and 2.5% BPSH groups, but these values decreased at higher concentrations. On the other hand, growth of the seedlings gradually increased up to a concentration of 10% BPSH and decreased at 100% concentration. As a result, at concentrations up to 10% the product was found to be beneficial for growth of plants. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to quantitatively determine the electrophysiologic changes occurring in the peripheral nerves and muscles in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) treated with haemodialysis (HD) or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), and to determine which electrophysiologic parameters are most commonly abnormal in uraemic patients. We investigated the relationship between the parameters of neurography and quantitative electromyography (QEMG) and clinical findings. The study included 42 patients with CRF (30 on HD and 12 on CAPD). Nerve conduction studies (NCSs) of the median, ulnar, tibial, peroneal, and sural nerves, and QEMG of the tibialis anterior and biceps brachii muscles were performed. We found axonal and/or demyelinating polyneuropathies in 97.6% of the patients (100% of HD and 91.7% of CAPD patients), but were not able to verify any significant differences between the HD and CAPD patients using NCS or QEMG. Median, ulnar, sural sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitudes, peroneal CV and F-latency were the most common abnormal parameters in sensory and motor NCSs, respectively. The clinical findings only correlated with the parameters of neurography, and not with the parameters of QEMG. Sural SNAP amplitudes, peroneal and tibial CVs, F-latencies also correlated with the severity of the clinical findings in these patients, suggesting that these parameters can be used in follow up studies in these patients. In this study, most of the uraemic patients were found to have already mild or moderate neuropathies in which the objective clinical signs might be absent, even if they have some clinical symptoms. NCS showed abnormality indicating polyneuropathy in 24 out of 25 patients with clinical neuropathy signs and in 17 out of 17 patients with no clinical signs. Thus, in subclinical conditions NCS is useful to detect the abnormalities in peripheral nerves of the ureamic patients under chronic dialysis. 相似文献

In the present study, the production of laccase (Lac) and manganese‐dependent peroxidase (MnP) by the white‐rot fungus Trametes versicolor grown in submerged cultures with different agricultural residues was investigated. The lignocellulosic materials studied were almond shells, hazelnut husks, sunflower stems, clover straw and hazelnut cobs, because they are common agricultural wastes in Turkey. Among the different lignocellulosic materials studied, hazelnut cobs provided the highest Lac and MnP activities (47.09 and 109.21 U/L, respectively). The optimum conditions were determined for Lac and MnP production in submerged cultures of T. versicolor by using hazelnut cobs as substrate. For Lac production, the optimum incubation time, hazelnut cob concentration, pH, and shaking rate were found as 4 days, 2% w/v, 6.0 and 130 rpm, respectively. For MnP production, the optimum incubation time, hazelnut cob concentration, pH and shaking rate were found as 5 days, 2% w/v, 6.0 and 90 rpm, respectively. 相似文献

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune blistering disease in which antibodies against the desmosomal cadherin, DSG3 (desmoglein-3), cause acantholysis. It has become increasingly clear that loss of cell-cell adhesion in PV is a complex and active process involving multiple signaling events such as activation of p38MAPK. It has also been demonstrated that incubating keratinocytes with PV IgG causes a redistribution of DSG3 from the cell surface to endosomes, which target these proteins for degradation. This study was undertaken to determine the relationship between p38MAPK and DSG3 endocytosis in pemphigus. In this work, we confirm that PV IgG causes internalization of cell-surface DSG3 into endosomes (as early as 4 h), which are then depleted from both detergent-soluble and detergent-insoluble pools. Cell-surface DSG3 internalization and depletion from both the detergent-soluble and detergent-insoluble fractions were blocked by the p38MAPK inhibitor SB202190. These data suggest that p38MAPK is capable of regulating PV IgG-mediated DSG3 internalization and that previously isolated mechanistic observations may be linked to a common pathway by which pemphigus autoantibodies lead to acantholysis. 相似文献

Drought-induced changes in nutrient concentrations and retention in two shallow Mediterranean lakes subjected to different degrees of management 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

While extensive knowledge exists on the relationship between nutrient loading and nutrient concentrations in lakes in the
cold temperate region, few studies have been conducted in warm lakes, not least in warm arid lakes. This is unfortunate as
a larger proportion of the world’s lakes will be situated in arid climates in the future due to climate change and a larger
proportion will suffer from a higher frequency of intensive drought. We conducted a comprehensive 11–13 year mass balance
study in two interconnected shallow Mediterranean lakes in Turkey, covering a period with substantial changes in climate conditions.
The upstream lake was only affected by natural changes in nutrient loading, while the downstream lake was additionally influenced
by sewage diversion and restoration by fish removal. Contrasting to experience from north temperate lakes we found an increase
in in-lake concentrations of total phosphorus and inorganic nitrogen (ammonia as well as nitrate) in dry years despite lower
external nutrient loading, and submerged macrophytes did not increase the nitrogen retention capacity of the lakes. In contrast,
fish removal modulated the nitrogen concentration as in north temperate lakes, but the effect was not long-lasting. Our results
suggest that climate warming reduces the nutrient retention capacity of shallow lakes in the Mediterranean and exacerbates
eutrophication. Lower thresholds of nutrient loading for shifting turbid shallow lakes to a clear water state are therefore
to be expected in arid zones in a future warmer climate, with important management implications. 相似文献
