Adaptation to divergent ecological niches can result in speciation. Traits subject to disruptive selection that also contribute to non-random mating will facilitate speciation with gene flow. Such ‘magic’ or ‘multiple-effect’ traits may be widespread and important for generating biodiversity, but strong empirical evidence is still lacking. Although there is evidence that putative ecological traits are indeed involved in assortative mating, evidence that these same traits are under divergent selection is considerably weaker. Heliconius butterfly wing patterns are subject to positive frequency-dependent selection by predators, owing to aposematism and Müllerian mimicry, and divergent colour patterns are used by closely related species to recognize potential mates. The amenability of colour patterns to experimental manipulation, independent of other traits, presents an excellent opportunity to test their role during speciation. We conducted field experiments with artificial butterflies, designed to match natural butterflies with respect to avian vision. These were complemented with enclosure trials with live birds and real butterflies. Our experiments showed that hybrid colour-pattern phenotypes are attacked more frequently than parental forms. For the first time, we demonstrate disruptive ecological selection on a trait that also acts as a mating cue.  相似文献

Summary Terminally differentiating mouse muscle cells were used to examine the relationship between mytogenic withdrawal from the cell cycle and the levels of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) mRNA and DHFR activity. Differentiation was induced by removal of fibroblast growth factor activity from the medium. DHFR mRNA was measured by a RNase protection assay. DHFR activity was measured by a spectrophotometric assay and by a [3H]methotrexate binding assay. Proliferative myoblasts contained four DHFR mRNA molecules and 1.8×105 DHFR enzyme molecules. By 12.5 h after induction, when [3H]thymidine labeling indices showed all cells had withdrawn from the cell cycle, DHFR mRNA levels had declined to 0.7 copies per cell. In contrast, myogenic withdrawal did not result in reduced DHFR activity. Qualitatively similar results, i.e. down-regulation of mRNA and constitutive expression of activity, were observed in a methotrexate-selected muscle cell line with >50-fold amplification of the DHFR gene. Enzyme synthesis rate and stability measurements indicated that persistence of DHFR activity in postreplicative cells was due to a long enzyme lifetime rather than to continued synthesis from residual normal DHFR mRNA or an alternative mRNA species not detected by the RNase protection assay. Unlike DHFR, thymidine kinase (TK) activity disappeared rapidly as muscle cells differentiated. Both DHFR mRNA and TK mRNA are expressed in a replication-dependent manner; however, the enzymes encoded by these messages are subject to different fates in postreplicative cells. Airway lengthening after pneumonectomy (PNX) may increase diffusive resistance to gas mixing (1/D(G)); the effect is accentuated by increasing acinar gas density but is difficult to detect from lung CO-diffusing capacity (Dl(CO)). Because lung NO-diffusing capacity (Dl(NO)) is three- to fivefold that of Dl(CO), whereas 1/D(G) for NO and CO are similar, we hypothesized that a density-dependent fractional reduction would be greater for Dl(NO) than for Dl(CO). We measured Dl(NO) and Dl(CO) at two tidal volumes (Vt) and with three background gases [helium (He), nitrogen (N(2)), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF(6))] in immature dogs 3 and 9 mo after right PNX (5 and 11 mo of age). At maturity (11 mo), background gas density had no effect on Dl(NO), Dl(CO), or Dl(NO)-to-Dl(CO) ratio in sham controls. In PNX animals, Dl(NO) declined 25-50% in SF(6) relative to He and N(2), and Dl(NO)/Dl(CO) declined approximately 50% in SF(6) relative to He at a Vt of 15 ml/kg, consistent with a significant 1/D(G). At 5 mo of age, Dl(NO)/Dl(CO) declined 25-45% in SF(6) relative to He and N(2) in both groups, but Dl(CO) increased paradoxically in SF(6) relative to N(2) or He by 20-60%. Findings suggest that SF(6), besides increasing 1/D(G), may redistribute ventilation and/or enhance acinar penetration of the convective front.  相似文献

Fifteen mongrel dogs weighing 22-34 kg were instrumented to investigate the antiarrhythmic effects of ammonia (0.1-0.2 mmol/min ammonium hydroxide), adenosine (1.87 mumol/min), and saline (0.9% NaCl) during norepinephrine-driven ventricular tachycardia, under conditions of controlled and natural coronary blood flow. Under natural flow conditions, the severe ectopy caused by norepinephrine (100-800 ng.kg-1.min-1) was reduced by 42 +/- 4% after 30 s of ammonia infusion. Adenosine infusion reduced percent ectopy by 97 +/- 2% at 30 s. Ammonia also significantly increased coronary blood flow by 26 +/- 4%, while adenosine increased blood flow by 72 +/- 14%. Saline infusion had no significant effect on either the severity of ventricular tachycardia or coronary blood flow. Norepinephrine consistently caused coronary functional hyperemia as previously reported. When coronary blood flow was controlled by a peristaltic pump to match natural coronary blood flow and to prevent norepinephrine-induced coronary functional hyperemia, the antiarrhythmic effects of ammonia were lost while those of adenosine were unaffected. Additionally, increasing coronary blood flow manually during norepinephrine-induced ventricular tachycardia, to a level seen with combined norepinephrine and ammonia under natural flow conditions, appeared to worsen the ventricular arrhythmias. We conclude that the antiarrhythmic properties of ammonia against norepinephrine-driven ventricular tachycardia might be dependent on coronary blood flow, while those of adenosine are independent of coronary blood flow.  相似文献
