Effect of lithium chloride on ethanol uptake by rats

A selective uptake of ethanol by presenting its 5% solution as the only source of fluid was elaborated in rats for 2 months. It was found that lithium chloride injected intravenously in a dose of 35 mg/kg twice per 24 hours for 14 days depressed the ethanol preference causing a motivation inversion whose mechanism was associated with the changes in the activity of the hypothalamic centres of the neuroendocrine regulation. A possibility of lithium salts in the therapy of chronic alcoholism is discussed.

The authors carried out serological typing of 98 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, isolated from patients of burn department of the Sklifosovsky First Aid Institute in January-July, 1974, and of 215 strains obtained from other sources; their sensitivity to 13 antibiotics was determined. Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultures isolated from the patients were typed with O-sera of 10 serological types. The presence of several hospital strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found by means of serological typing; along with these there were revealed cultures of this causative agent sporadically appearing in the department. Sensitivity to some antibiotics could serve as an additional criterion for differentiation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains of the same serological type.

A parallel histological and electron microscopic study of the capillary network of interalveolar septa has shown that in this microstructure there is only one two-dimensional capillary network, common for adjacent alveoles. In septal spaces of interalveolar septa the collagenic fibrils form an even thin network and additional collagenic bundles. The latter are mainly found in intercapillary septal spaces. The elastic fibres in interalveolar septa are found rarely, no interstitial cells being found at all.     

Prolongation of sleep following creation of a generator of pathologically enhanced excitation in the orbital cortex

Acute experiments on cats showed that injection of tetanus toxin into the orbital cortex (which destroys various types of inhibition) resulted in the formation of a local generator of pathologically enhanced excitation in this cortex area. Chronic experiments showed that cats with such a generator in the orbital cortex developed pathological changes of sleep, expressed in reduction of the duration of wakefulness and development of the slow-wave and paradoxical sleep phases being, retained. The results of this investigation confirm the view on the participation of the orbitofrontal cortex in sleep induction. They are in favour of the general conception on the role of the determinant structure in the nervous system activity and the theory of the generator mechanisms of the neuropathological syndromes characterized by the hyperactivity of the system.
