To determine if high-fat (HF) diet-induced changes in adipose tissue cellularity are associated with the presence of paracrine growth factor(s) that alter preadipocyte proliferation, Osborne-Mendel rats were fed either a HF (76% energy) or a low-fat (LF, 12% energy) diet for 85 days. HF-fed rats had greater (P < 0.05) fat pad size, total fat cell number, number of small (30-70 microm) and large (80-140 microm) adipocytes, and percentage of 100- to 140-microm adipocytes compared with LF-fed rats. Preadipocytes in primary cell culture treated with inguinal adipose tissue conditioned medium (ATCM) prepared from HF-fed rats had greater (P < 0.05) proliferation compared with cultures treated with ATCM from LF-fed rats. Proliferative capacity of ATCM prepared from HF-fed rats was attenuated after the stripping of the medium of insulin-like growth factor I using an immunomagnetic bead separation system. These data are consistent with the concept that insulin-like growth factor I is involved in the paracrine regulation of adipogenesis. 相似文献

A correspondence is established between the basic elements of logic reasoning systems (knowledge bases, rules, inference and queries) and the structure and dynamical evolution laws of neural networks. The correspondence is pictured as a translation dictionary which might allow to go back and forth between symbolic and network formulations, a desirable step in learning-oriented systems and multicomputer networks. In the framework of Horn clause logics, it is found that atomic propositions with n arguments correspond to nodes with nth order synapses, rules to synaptic intensity constraints, forward chaining to synaptic dynamics and queries either to simple node activation or to a query tensor dynamics. 相似文献

The dichloromethane extract of Calea uniflora afforded a mixture of two novel chromanones, uniflorol-A (1) and uniflorol-B (2), and one known chromanone, 2,2-dimethyl-6-(1-hydroxyethyl)-chroman-4-one (3). The structures of these compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods. Biological activity of the compounds against Leishmania major promastigotes was evaluated. Mixture of the novel chromanones 1 and 2 showed significant growth inhibition of the parasite in the micrograms per milliliter range. 相似文献

Identification of beta-lactam antibiotics that have negligible effects on plant regeneration is a critical step towards the
establishment of a reliable Agrobacterium-mediated transformation protocol for perennial trees. In the present report, we have evaluated the effects of the novel beta-lactam
antibiotics meropenem and timentin on plant regeneration of a perennial woody fruit plant, Citrus sinensis, in comparison with the commonly used beta-lactam cefotaxime. It was observed that, in contrast to cefotaxime, meropenem
and timentin had a positive or no detrimental effect on the shoot regeneration from epicotyl explants. Residual effects of
the beta-lactams from shoot regeneration medium also affected the subsequent ability of the roots to elongate. The addition
of meropenem and/or timentin in the rooting medium mostly improved or did not affect the rooting ability of the adventitious

The role of cytochrome c (Cyt c) in caspase activation has largely been established from mammalian cell-culture studies, but much remains to be learned about its physiological relevance in situ. The role of Cyt c in invertebrates has been subject to considerable controversy. The Drosophila genome contains distinct cyt c genes: cyt c-p and cyt c-d. Loss of cyt c-p function causes embryonic lethality owing to a requirement of the gene for mitochondrial respiration. By contrast, cyt c-d mutants are viable but male sterile. Here, we show that cyt c-d regulates developmental apoptosis in the pupal eye. cyt c-d mutant retinas show a profound delay in the apoptosis of superfluous interommatidial cells and perimeter ommatidial cells. Furthermore, there is no apoptosis in mutant retinal tissues for the Drosophila homologues of apoptotic protease-activating factor 1 (Ark) and caspase 9 (Dronc). In addition, we found that cyt c-d--as with ark and dronc-regulates scutellar bristle number, which is known to depend on caspase activity. Collectively, our results indicate a role of Cyt c in caspase regulation of Drosophila somatic cells. 相似文献

Animals have adapted behavioral and physiological strategies to conserve energy during periods of adverse conditions. Heterothermy is one such adaptation used by endotherms. While heterothermy—fluctuations in body temperature and metabolic rate—has been shown in large vertebrates, little is known of the costs and benefits of this strategy, both in terms of energy and in terms of fitness. Hence, our objective was to model the energetics of seasonal heterothermy in the largest Arctic ungulate, the muskox (Ovibos moschatus), using an individual‐based energy budget model of metabolic physiology. We found that the empirically based drop in body temperature (winter max ~−0.8°C) overwinter in adult females resulted in substantial fitness benefits in terms of reduced daily energy expenditure and body mass loss. Body mass and energy reserves were 8.98% and 14.46% greater in modeled heterotherms compared to normotherms by end of winter. Based on environmental simulations, we show that seasonal heterothermy can, to some extent, buffer the negative consequences of poor prewinter body condition or reduced winter food accessibility, leading to greater winter survival (+20%–30%) and spring energy reserves (+10%–30%), and thus increased probability of future reproductive success. These results indicate substantial adaptive short‐term benefits of seasonal heterothermy at the individual level, with potential implications for long‐term population dynamics in highly seasonal environments. 相似文献
