Postural instability is one of the most incapacitating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and appears to be related to cognitive deficits. This study aims to determine the cognitive factors that can predict deficits in static and dynamic balance in individuals with PD. A sociodemographic questionnaire characterized 52 individuals with PD for this work. The Trail Making Test, Rule Shift Cards Test, and Digit Span Test assessed the executive functions. The static balance was assessed using a plantar pressure platform, and dynamic balance was based on the Timed Up and Go Test. The results were statistically analysed using SPSS Statistics software through linear regression analysis. The results show that a statistically significant model based on cognitive outcomes was able to explain the variance of motor variables. Also, the explanatory value of the model tended to increase with the addition of individual and clinical variables, although the resulting model was not statistically significant The model explained 25–29% of the variability of the Timed Up and Go Test, while for the anteroposterior displacement it was 23–34%, and for the mediolateral displacement it was 24–39%. From the findings, we conclude that the cognitive performance, especially the executive functions, is a predictor of balance deficit in individuals with PD. 相似文献
Studies of the floral biology of the buriti palm, Mauritia flexuosa, have presented conflicting results with respect to the mechanism of pollination, indicating either cantharophily or anemophily. To resolve this question, the floral biology of M. flexuosa was studied in a coastal restinga environment in northeastern Brazil. The reproductive system was studied experimentally, and floral visitors were collected by bagging inflorescences. In this environment, M. flexuosa, a dioecious species, has several gender-specific floral features that function to attract pollinators, especially beetles. The male flowers produce large amounts of pollen as a reward, and male and female inflorescences produce similar odors that attract pollinators to female flowers, which offer only a nectar secretion as a reward. When feeding on the female flowers, the visitors frequently come into contact with the stigmata. To increase the chances of pollination, the female flowers persist longer than the male ones, and the viability of the pollen grain is very high. A curculionid beetle species of the genus Grasidius was found to be an effective pollinator. We suspect that wind also contributes to the pollination of M. flexuosa in the study area, but in a relatively minor way. 相似文献
The New World screwworm (NWS) Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) is one of the major myiasis-causing flies that injures livestock and leads to losses of ~US$ 2.7 billions/year in the Neotropics. Ivermectin (IVM), a macrocyclic lactone (ML), is the most used preventive insecticide for this parasite and targets the glutamate-gated chloride (GLUCLα) channels. Several authors have associated altered GluClα homologues to MLs resistance in invertebrates, although studies about resistance in NWS are limited to other genes. Here, we aimed to characterise the NWS GluClα (ChGluClα) cDNA and to search for alterations associated with IVM resistance in NWS larvae from a bioassay. The open reading frame of the ChGluClα comprised 1,359 bp and encoded a sequence of 452 amino acids. The ChGluClα cDNAs of the bioassay larvae showed different sequences that could be splice variants, which agree with the occurrence of alternative splicing in GluClα homologues. In addition, we found cDNAs with premature stop codons and the K242R SNP, which occurred more frequently in the surviving larvae and was located close to mutation (L256F) involved in ML resistance. Although these alterations were in low frequency, the ChGluClα sequencing will allow further studies to find alterations in the gene of resistant natural populations. 相似文献
Gerbode defect is a rare type of left ventricle to right atrium shunt. It is usually congenital in origin, but acquired cases are also described, mainly following infective endocarditis, valve replacement, trauma or acute myocardial infarction. We report a case of a 50-year-old man who suffered an extensive and complex infective endocarditis involving a bicuspid aortic valve, the mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa and the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve. After dual valve replacement and annular reconstruction, a shunt between the left ventricle and the right atrium - Gerbode defect, and a severe leak of the mitral prosthesis were detected. Reintervention was performed with successful shunt closure with an autologous pericardial patch and paravalvular leak correction. No major complications occurred denying the immediate post-surgery period and the follow-up at the first year was uneventful. 相似文献
Despite the fact that coffee rust was first investigated scientifically more than a century ago, and that the disease is one of the major constraints to coffee production - constantly changing the socio-economic and historical landscape of the crop - critical aspects of the life cycle of the pathogen, Hemileia vastatrix, remain unclear. The asexual urediniospores are regarded as the only functional propagule: theoretically, making H. vastatrix a clonal species. However, the well-documented emergence of new rust pathotypes and the breakdown in genetic resistance of coffee cultivars, present a paradox.
Methods and Results
Here, using computer-assisted DNA image cytometry, following a modified nuclear stoichiometric staining technique with Feulgen, we show that meiosis occurs within the urediniospores. Stages of spore development were categorised based on morphology, from the spore-mother cell through to the germinating spore, and the relative nuclear DNA content was quantified statistically at each stage.
Conclusions
Hidden sexual reproduction disguised within the asexual spore (cryptosexuality) could explain why new physiological races have arisen so often and so quickly in Hemileia vastatrix. This could have considerable implications for coffee breeding strategies and may be a common event in rust fungi, especially in related genera occupying the same basal phylogenetic lineages. 相似文献
1. In this article we review the studies of memory disabilities in a rat model o Parkinson's disease (PD).2. Intranigral administration of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) to rats causes a partial lesion in the substantia nigra, compact part (SNc) and a specific loss of dopamine and its metabolites in the striatum of rats.3. These animals present learning and memory deficits but no sensorimotor impairments, thus modeling the early phase of PD when cognitive impairments are observed but the motor symptoms of the disease are barely present.4. The cognitive deficits observed in these animals affect memory tasks proposed to model habit learning (the cued version of the water maze task and the two-way active avoidance task) and working memory (a working memory version of the water maze), but spare long-term spatial memory (the spatial reference version of the Morris water maze).5. The treatment of these animals with levodopa in a dose that restores the striatal level of dopamine does not reverse these memory impairments, probably because this treatment promotes a high level of dopamine in extrastriatal brain regions, such as the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus.6. On the other hand, the adenosine receptor antagonist, caffeine, partly reverse the memory impairment effect of SNc lesion in these rats. This effect may be due to caffeine action on nigrostriatal neurons, since it induces dopamine release and modulates the interaction between adenosine and dopamine receptor activity.7. These results suggest that the MPTP SNc-lesioned rats are a good model to study memory disabilities related to PD and that caffeine and other selective A(2A) adenosine receptor antagonists are promising drugs to treat this symptoms in PD patients. 相似文献
The use of phosphate-solubilizing fungi is a promising biotechnological strategy in the management of phosphorus (P) fertilization, as it enables the utilization of rock phosphates (RP) or the recovery of P fixed in soil particles. The objective of our study was to evaluate fungal isolates for mechanisms of solubilization of P-bearing compounds, such as AlPO4, FePO4, Ca3(PO4)2, Araxá RP, and Catalão RP. Four fungal isolates obtained from Brazilian soils were characterized in liquid media: Aspergillus niger FS1, Penicillium canescens FS23, Eupenicillium ludwigii FS27, and Penicillium islandicum FS30. A. niger FS1 was the only isolate able to solubilize all of the P sources, solubilizing 71, 36, 100, and 14 % of the P from AlPO4, FePO4, Ca3(PO4)2, and RPs, respectively. Medium acidification was an effective solubilization mechanism, particularly for Ca3(PO4)2. The other P sources were mainly solubilized through organic acids produced by the fungi. Oxalic acid, produced exclusively by A. niger FS1, and citric acid were decisive factors in the solubilization of AlPO4 and FePO4. Penicillium isolates produced more gluconic acid than A. niger FS1 in all treatments. However, this higher production did not result in higher solubilization for any of the P sources, showing that gluconic acid contributes little to the solubilization of the P sources evaluated. The higher capacity of medium acidification and the production of organic acids with stronger metal-complexation activity are characteristics that confer to A. niger FS1 a wider action on insoluble P sources. Consequently, this isolate qualifies as a promising candidate for application in the management of P fertilization. 相似文献
During fungal rock phosphate (RP) solubilization, a significant quantity of fluoride (F−) is released together with phosphorus (P), strongly inhibiting the process. In the present study, the effect of two F− adsorbents [activated alumina (Al2O3) and biochar] on RP solubilization by Aspergillus niger was examined. Al2O3 adsorbed part of the F− released but also adsorbed soluble P, which makes it inappropriate for microbial RP solubilization systems. In contrast, biochar adsorbed only F− while enhancing phosphate solubilization 3-fold, leading to the accumulation of up to 160 mg of P per liter. By comparing the values of F− measured in solution at the end of incubation and those from a predictive model, it was estimated that up to 19 mg of F− per liter can be removed from solution by biochar when added at 3 g liter−1 to the culture medium. Thus, biochar acted as an F− sink during RP solubilization and led to an F− concentration in solution that was less inhibitory to the process. In the presence of biochar, A. niger produced larger amounts of citric, gluconic, and oxalic acids, whether RP was present or not. Our results show that biochar enhances RP solubilization through two interrelated processes: partial removal of the released F− and increased organic acid production. Given the importance of organic acids for P solubilization and that most of the RPs contain high concentrations of F−, the proposed solubilization system offers an important technological improvement for the microbial production of soluble P fertilizers from RP. 相似文献
The present study aimed to investigate the role of four non-native invertebrates in supporting fish biomass as well as their influence on the carbon flow into the Volta Grande reservoir food web. The fish samples were carried out quarterly between October 2015 and July 2016 using gillnets. At the sampled sites, four non-native invertebrates (golden mussel, Asian clam, trumpet snail and Amazonian prawn), which are potential prey for fish in the Volta Grande reservoir, were collected by targeted sampling using a Petersen-type bottom dredger and semi-circular sieves. The gut contents of the fish were collected and analyzed under stereoscope, and samples of muscle tissue of these fish, as well as the four non-native invertebrate species sampled, were submitted for isotopic analysis. Results obtained by the present study, by both gut content and stable isotopic analyses, pointed to a trophic structure where non-native species represent not only a strong component of the fish community, but also their main carbon source. Based on gut contents and isotopic mixing models, we found that together, non-native prey are essential carbon sources for the fish fauna, fuelling more than 40.0% of the biomass in four dominant fish species. The consumption rate of non-native bivalves by the native omnivorous fish Leporinus friderici suggested these filter-feeding organisms potentially constitute an important trophic connection between littoral consumers and pelagic energy sources. In addition, non-native prey were also prominent carbon sources for non-native fish, fuelling more than half of the biomass in peacock bass and silver croaker, suggesting these prey have a fundamental role in maintaining non-native fish populations in this system. Our results may help to understand fundamental ecological issues bringing to light the extent to which these new combinations of species influence the energy flow and ecosystem properties of the Volta Grande reservoir.
