Comparison of recent and historical surveys of frog populations in cloudforest habitat in Sierra de las Minas, Guatemala, indicated population declines and local extirpation of several species. Pathological exams of diseased tadpoles indicated infection by amphibian chytridiomycosis. The local habitat has been severely altered by recent establishment of large-scale leatherleaf fern production. Analysis of water chemistry at our study site suggested increased nitrogenation associated with the leatherleaf industry.  相似文献

Abstract .Theory predicts that sexual (or behavioral) isolation will be the first form of reproductive isolation to evolve in lineages characterized by sexual selection. Here I directly compare the rate of evolution of sexual isolation with that of hybrid inviability in a diverse and sexually dimorphic genus of freshwater fish. The magnitude of both sexual isolation and hybrid inviability were quantified for multiple pairs of allopatric species. Rates of evolution were inferred by comparing genetic distances of these species pairs with the magnitude of each form of reproductive isolation: the slope of the regression of genetic distance on the magnitude of reproductive isolation represents the rate of evolution. Of the two forms of isolation, the magnitude of sexual isolation exhibited the steeper slope of regression, indicating that sexual isolation will tend to evolve to completion earlier than hybrid inviability, strictly as a by-product of evolution in geographically isolated populations. Additional evidence from the literature is used to qualitatively compare rates of evolution of sexual isolation with that of other forms of reproductive isolation. Preliminary comparisons support the prediction that sexual isolation will evolve more rapidly than other forms. Because Etheostoma is characterized by striking sexual dimorphism, these results are consistent with the hypothesis that sexual selection for exaggerated mate-recognition characters causes the relatively rapid evolution of sexual isolation.  相似文献

White adipose tissue is an important endocrine organ involved in the control of whole-body metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and food intake. To better understand these functions, 3T3-L1 cell differentiation was studied by using combined proteomic and genomic strategies. The proteomics approach developed here exploits velocity gradient centrifugation as an alternative to isoelectric focusing for protein separation in the first dimension. A 20- to 30-fold increase in the concentration of numerous mitochondrial proteins was observed during adipogenesis, as determined by mass spectrometry and database correlation analysis. Light and electron microscopy confirmed a large increase in the number of mitochondrion profiles with differentiation. Furthermore, mRNA profiles obtained by using Affymetrix GeneChips revealed statistically significant increases in the expression of many nucleus-encoded mitochondrial genes during adipogenesis. Qualitative changes in mitochondrial composition also occur during adipose differentiation, as exemplified by increases in expression of proteins involved in fatty acid metabolism and of mitochondrial chaperones. Furthermore, the insulin sensitizer rosiglitazone caused striking changes in mitochondrial shape and expression of selective mitochondrial proteins. Thus, although mitochondrial biogenesis has classically been associated with brown adipocyte differentiation and thermogenesis, our results reveal that mitochondrial biogenesis and remodeling are inherent to adipose differentiation per se and are influenced by the actions of insulin sensitizers.  相似文献

Motile cells of Bacillus subtilis inadvertently escaped from the surface of an agar disk that was surrounded by a fluid growth medium and formed a migrating population in the fluid. When viewed from above, the population appeared as a cloud advancing unidirectionally into the fresh medium. The cell population became spontaneously organized into a series of stripes in a region behind the advancing cloud front. The number of stripes increased progressively until a saturation value of stripe density per unit area was reached. New stripes arose at a fixed distance behind the cloud front and also between stripes. The spacing between stripes underwent changes with time as stripes migrated towards and away from the cloud front. The global pattern appeared to be stretched by the advancing cloud front. At a time corresponding to approximately two cell doublings after pattern formation, the pattern decayed, suggesting that there is a maximum number of cells that can be maintained within the pattern. Stripes appear to consist of high concentrations of cells organized in sinking columns that are part of a bioconvection system. Their behavior reveals an interplay between bacterial swimming, bioconvection-driven fluid motion, and cell concentration. A mathematical model that reproduces the development and dynamics of the stripe pattern has been developed.  相似文献

Cocaine is a potent vasoconstrictor that hasbeen shown to alter hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell countsin both animals and humans. The present study evaluated whether cocaine administration induces splenic constriction in men and whether spleen-volume changes temporally correlate with altered hematologic parameters. Spleen volume was assessed at baseline and after cocaine administration (0.4 mg/kg) by using magnetic resonance imaging. A groupof five healthy men, aged 31 ± 2 (SE) yr and reporting occasionalcocaine use (13 ± 5 lifetime exposures), participated. Cocainereduced spleen volume by 20 ± 4%(P < 0.03) 10 min after drugadministration. Spleen volume returned to normal (101 ± 3% baseline) within 35 min after cocaine administration, indicating thatthe reduction is a transient phenomenon. In subjectsadministered cocaine from whom blood samples were obtained(n = 3), cocaine increased hemoglobinlevels, hematocrit, and red blood cell count to 104.5 ± 0.9, 105.6 ± 1.2, and 106.5 ± 1.0% of baseline levels, respectively(P < 0.03), but it did not alterwhite blood cell and platelet counts. Placebo administration(n = 5) did not alter hematologicparameters. These results suggest that cocaine induces splenicconstriction in humans, and this may contribute to temporally concordant hematologic parameter changes. These events may help topreserve or increase tissue oxygenation in periods of high oxygendemand and/or increased vascular resistance.

To explain differences in gut microbial communities we must determine how processes regulating microbial community assembly (colonization, persistence) differ among hosts and affect microbiota composition. We surveyed the gut microbiota of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from 10 geographically clustered populations and sequenced environmental samples to track potential colonizing microbes and quantify the effects of host environment and genotype. Gut microbiota composition and diversity varied among populations. These among-population differences were associated with multiple covarying ecological variables: habitat type (lake, stream, estuary), lake geomorphology and food- (but not water-) associated microbiota. Fish genotype also covaried with gut microbiota composition; more genetically divergent populations exhibited more divergent gut microbiota. Our results suggest that population level differences in stickleback gut microbiota may depend more on internal sorting processes (host genotype) than on colonization processes (transient environmental effects).  相似文献

The snubnose darters (Percidae: subgenus Ulocentra) are a group of small, brightly colored North American freshwater fish belonging to the genus Etheostoma. Phylogenetic relationships among snubnose species have been a challenge to resolve at all levels of divergence, from the monophyly of species to deeper relationships among subgenera. Here, we used amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) to estimate phylogenetic relationships among species from three closely related subgenera: Ulocentra, Etheostoma, and Nanostoma. With nearly complete sampling of recognized species, our analysis yielded a robust tree with statistical support at all nodes. Support was strongest for shallower relationships; support for internal nodes was either comparable to or greater than that of previous studies based on mitochondrial sequence data. Most recovered relationships were consistent with earlier hypotheses based on morphology or mtDNA sequences, with the exception of Etheostoma histrio, which was recovered as sister to Ulocentra. Our analysis indicates that careful use of AFLPs can yield statistically robust estimates of evolutionary relationships across multiple levels of divergence.  相似文献

An improved sewage surveillance algorithm (sample acquisition, processing, and molecular analysis) for wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses was developed and validated. It was based on plaque isolation with sensitive and high-throughput methods. The molecular analysis included sequencing; a comparison of the type, rate, and distribution of nucleotide substitutions with a profile for outbreaks evolving from a single progenitor; and phylogenetic analysis for relative similarity. The analyses revealed that two environmental wild type 1 isolates from the Gaza district in 2002 were imported separately, most likely from Egyptian southern governorates, and were not linked by endemic circulation. These findings illustrate the continuous spreading potential of wild-type poliovirus and underscore the value of extensive environmental surveillance employing advanced molecular analysis to monitor wild poliovirus in poliomyelitis-free regions.  相似文献
