An agent’s beliefs usually depend on informational or cognitive factors such as observation or received communication or reasoning, but also affective factors may play a role. In this paper, by adopting neurological theories on the role of emotions and feelings, an agent model is introduced incorporating the interaction between cognitive and affective factors in believing. The model describes how the strength of a belief may not only depend on information obtained, but also on the emotional responses on the belief. For feeling emotions a recursive body loop between preparations for emotional responses and feelings is assumed. The model introduces a second feedback loop for the interaction between feeling and belief. The strength of a belief and of the feeling both result from the converging dynamic pattern modelled by the combination of the two loops. For some specific cases it is described, for example, how for certain personal characteristics an optimistic world view is generated in the agent’s beliefs, or, for other characteristics, a pessimistic world view. Moreover, the paper shows how such affective effects on beliefs can emerge and become stronger over time due to experiences obtained. It is shown how based on Hebbian learning a connection from feeling to belief can develop. As these connections affect the strenghts of future beliefs, in this way an effect of judgment ‘by experience built up in the past’ or ‘by gut feeling’ can be obtained. Some example simulation results and a mathematical analysis of the equilibria are presented.  相似文献

BackgroundGlaucoma is a neurodegenerative ophthalmic disorder and is considered among the leading causes of irreversible blindness. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type of glaucoma that affects after 30 years of life, progressing slowly, and manifests as decreased visual acuity leading to blindness if not treated. POAG is genetically heterogeneous, inherited most commonly in autosomal dominant mode. Several genes have been reported for POAG with myocilin (Myoc) being most common. The present study has been conducted to screen 25 POAG families with 2 or more affected members for their association with Myoc and CYP1B1 (the most common gene in primary congenital glaucoma).MethodsAfter approval from Institutional Ethical Review Committee (ERC), 25 POAG families were enrolled from the southern province (Sindh) of Pakistan. Written informed consent was obtained from all participating individuals and diagnosis was confirmed by consultant ophthalmologists using various instruments and means. Venous blood was obtained from affected individuals and their normal family members for DNA extraction and subsequent analysis.ResultsAll samples were initially screened for the Myoc gene followed by CYP1B1. Screening for Myoc revealed one previously reported variant c.144G>T in POAG-06 whereas screening for CYP1B1 in all 25 families showed a novel variant c.649G>A in POAG-02. The pathogenicity of the novel variant was confirmed using various bioinformatics tools.ConclusionThis is the first report of any POAG family found associated with a novel variant in CYP1B1 from the southern province of Pakistan whereas one family found associated with a reported variant in Myoc. The remaining 23 POAG families did not found to be associated with either Myoc or CYP1B1 indicating genetic heterogeneity of the population in this part of the world.  相似文献

Irradiation of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. Russian Mammoth) hypocotyls with white light resulted in a 51% decrease in plasma membrane phosphatidylinositol monophosphate (PIP) kinase activity. As little as 10 s of white light irradiation was sufficient to lower the phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PIP2) produced in the in vitro phosphorylation assay. This decrease was not caused by an increase in phospholipase C activity since analysis of the water-soluble products indicated no increase in inositol bisphosphate or inositol trisphosphate. Treatment of the plasma membrane with 200 microM vanadate prior to phosphorylation enhanced the PIP kinase and appeared to overcome the light inhibition. In addition to decreasing the PIP kinase activity, light irradiation resulted in a corresponding decrease in the H(+)-ATPase activity to 53% of the dark control values. The plasma membrane ATPase activity increased approximately 2-fold when PIP or PIP2 was added to the isolated membranes. Thus, effects of external stimuli on the level of plasma membrane PIP or PIP2 could affect plasma membrane ATPase activity directly and thereby provide an alternative mechanism for control of cell growth.  相似文献

A recent innovation in televised election debates is a continuous response measure (commonly referred to as the "worm") that allows viewers to track the response of a sample of undecided voters in real-time. A potential danger of presenting such data is that it may prevent people from making independent evaluations. We report an experiment with 150 participants in which we manipulated the worm and superimposed it on a live broadcast of a UK election debate. The majority of viewers were unaware that the worm had been manipulated, and yet we were able to influence their perception of who won the debate, their choice of preferred prime minister, and their voting intentions. We argue that there is an urgent need to reconsider the simultaneous broadcast of average response data with televised election debates.  相似文献

A complete breeding soundness evaluation is essential for assessment of the infertile male dog. Cryptorchidism, a sex-limited autosomal recessive trait, is more common as a unilateral condition. Azoospermia is an ejaculate consisting of seminal plasma but lacking sperm; repeated semen collections in the presence of an estrual bitch will rule out inadequate experience and lack of sexual stimulation. Both carnitine and alkaline phosphatase (AP) are produced in the epididymis; seminal plasma AP concentrations>5000 U/L indicate a normal ejaculate, whereas <5000 U/L is associated with incomplete ejaculation. Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), the most common age-related condition in intact male dogs, is characterized by a sanguineous urethral discharge, hematuria, or hemospermia; diagnosis is based on prostatic enlargement and confirmed by a transabdominal biopsy. Although castration is recommended, valuable breeding dogs can be given finasteride. Prostatitis is more common in older dogs with BPH. Culture of the third fraction of the ejaculate or urine obtained by cystocentesis is indicated. Bacterial prostatitis is treated with antibiotics with high lipid solubility. Some dogs with bacterial prostatitis may develop prostatic abscesses (a medical and surgical emergency). Prostatic cysts are often asymptomatic. Approximately, 5-7% of dogs with prostatic disease have prostatic neoplasia, most commonly adenocarcinoma (it occurs in both intact and castrated dogs), which often metastasizes and has a very poor prognosis. Although a specific diagnosis can be made in many cases of male dog infertility, not all causes are amenable to treatment.  相似文献

These days, the usage of the internet of Vehicle Things (IVoT) applications such as E-Business, E-Train, E-Ambulance has been growing progressively. These applications require mobility-aware delay-sensitive services to execute their tasks. With this motivation, the study has the following contribution. Initially, the study devises a novel cooperative vehicular fog cloud network (VFCN) based on container microservices which offers cost-efficient and mobility-aware services with rich resources for processing. This study devises the cost-efficient task offloading and scheduling (CEMOTS) algorithm framework, which consists of the mobility aware task offloading phase (MTOP) method, which determines the optimal offloading time to minimize the communication cost of applications. Furthermore, CEMOTS offers Cooperative Task Offloading Scheduling (CTOS), including task sequencing and scheduling. The goal is to reduce the application costs of communication cost and computational costs under a given deadline constraint. Performance evaluation shows the CTOS and MTOP outperform existing task offloading and scheduling methods in the VCFN in terms of costs and the deadline for IoT applications.

Probes with runs of four or more guanines (G-stacks) in their sequences can exhibit a level of hybridization that is unrelated to the expression levels of the mRNA that they are intended to measure. This is most likely caused by the formation of G-quadruplexes, where inter-probe guanines form Hoogsteen hydrogen bonds, which probes with G-stacks are capable of forming. We demonstrate that for a specific microarray data set using the Human HG_U133A Affymetrix GeneChip and RMA normalization there is significant bias in the expression levels, the fold change and the correlations between expression levels. These effects grow more pronounced as the number of G-stack probes in a probe set increases. Approximately 14% of the probe sets are directly affected. The analysis was repeated for a number of other normalization pipelines and two, FARMS and PLIER, minimized the bias to some extent. We estimate that ~15% of the data sets deposited in the GEO database are susceptible to the effect. The inclusion of G-stack probes in the affected data sets can bias key parameters used in the selection and clustering of genes. The elimination of these probes from any analysis in such affected data sets outweighs the increase of noise in the signal.  相似文献

Small GTP-binding genes play an essential regulatory role in a multitude of cellular processes such as vesicle-mediated intracellular trafficking, signal transduction, cytoskeletal organization, and cell division in plants and animals. Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus are important model plants for studying legume-specific biological processes such as nodulation. The publicly available online resources for these plants from websites such as http://www.ncbi.nih.gov, http://www.medicago.org, http://www.tigr.org, and related sites were searched to collect nucleotide sequences that encode GTP-binding protein homologues. A total of 460 small GTPase sequences from several legume species including Medicago and Lotus, Arabidopsis, human, and yeast were phyletically analysed to shed light on the evolution and functional characteristics of legume-specific homologues. One of the main emphases of this study was the elucidation of the possible involvement of some members of small GTPase homologues in the establishment and maintenance of symbiotic associations in root nodules of legumes. A high frequency of vesicle-mediated trafficking in nodules led to the idea of a probable subfunctionalization of some members of this family in legumes. As a result of the analyses, a group of 10 small GTPases that are likely to be mainly expressed in nodules was determined. The sequences determined as a result of this study could be used in more detailed molecular genetic analyses such as creation of RNA interference silencing mutants for further clarification of the role of GTPases in nodulation. This study will also assist in furthering our understanding of the evolutionary history of small GTPases in legume species.  相似文献
