Animal communication involves the transfer of information between a sender and one or more receivers. However, such interactions do not happen in a social vacuum; third parties are typically present, who can potentially eavesdrop upon or intervene in the interaction. The importance of such bystanders in shaping the outcome of communicative interactions has been widely studied in humans, but has only recently received attention in other animal species. Here, we studied bouts of infant crying among rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in order to investigate how the presence of bystanders may affect the outcome of this signalling interaction between infants and mothers. It was hypothesized that, as crying is acoustically aversive, bystanders may be aggressive to the mother or the infant in order to bring the crying bout to a close. Consequently, it was predicted that mothers should acquiesce more often to crying if in the presence of potentially aggressive animals. In line with this prediction, it was found that mothers gave infants access to the nipple significantly more often when crying occurred in the presence of animals that posed a high risk of aggression towards them. Both mothers and infants tended to receive more aggression from bystanders during crying bouts than outside of this time, although such aggression was extremely rare and was received by less than half of the mothers and infants in the study. Mothers were also found to be significantly more aggressive to their infants while the latter were crying than outside of crying bouts. These results provide new insight into the complex dynamics of mother–offspring conflict, and indicate that bystanders may play an important role in shaping the outcome of signalling interactions between infants and their mothers. 相似文献

The data presented herein support the North American orthopoxviruses (NA OPXV) in a sister relationship to all other currently described Orthopoxvirus (OPXV) species. This phylogenetic analysis reaffirms the identification of the NA OPXV as close relatives of “Old World” (Eurasian and African) OPXV and presents high support for deeper nodes within the Chordopoxvirinae family. The natural reservoir host(s) for many of the described OPXV species remains unknown although a clear virus-host association exists between the genus OPXV and several mammalian taxa. The hypothesized host associations and the deep divergence of the OPXV/NA OPXV clades depicted in this study may reflect the divergence patterns of the mammalian faunas of the Old and New World and reflect a more ancient presence of OPXV on what are now the American continents. Genes from the central region of the poxvirus genome are generally more conserved than genes from either end of the linear genome due to functional constraints imposed on viral replication abilities. The relatively slower evolution of these genes may more accurately reflect the deeper history among the poxvirus group, allowing for robust placement of the NA OPXV within Chordopoxvirinae. Sequence data for nine genes were compiled from three NA OPXV strains plus an additional 50 genomes collected from Genbank. The current, gene sequence based phylogenetic analysis reaffirms the identification of the NA OPXV as the nearest relatives of “Old World” OPXV and presents high support for deeper nodes within the Chordopoxvirinae family. Additionally, the substantial genetic distances that separate the currently described NA OPXV species indicate that it is likely that many more undescribed OPXV/NA OPXV species may be circulating among wild animals in North America. 相似文献

The process of fertilization is critically dependent on the mutual recognition of gametes and in Plasmodium, the male gamete surface protein P48/45 is vital to this process. This protein belongs to a family of 10 structurally related proteins, the so called 6-cys family. To identify the role of additional members of this family in Plasmodium fertilisation, we performed genetic and functional analysis on the five members of the 6-cys family that are transcribed during the gametocyte stage of P. berghei. This analysis revealed that in addition to P48/45, two members (P230 and P47) also play an essential role in the process of parasite fertilization. Mating studies between parasites lacking P230, P48/45 or P47 demonstrate that P230, like P48/45, is a male fertility factor, consistent with the previous demonstration of a protein complex containing both P48/45 and P230. In contrast, disruption of P47 results in a strong reduction of female fertility, while males remain unaffected. Further analysis revealed that gametes of mutants lacking expression of p48/45 or p230 or p47 are unable to either recognise or attach to each other. Disruption of the paralog of p230, p230p, also specifically expressed in gametocytes, had no observable effect on fertilization. These results indicate that the P. berghei 6-cys family contains a number of proteins that are either male or female specific ligands that play an important role in gamete recognition and/or attachment. The implications of low levels of fertilisation that exist even in the absence of these proteins, indicating alternative pathways of fertilisation, as well as positive selection acting on these proteins, are discussed in the context of targeting these proteins as transmission blocking vaccine candidates. 相似文献

The ability of the gamma(1)34.5 protein to suppress the PKR response plays a crucial role in herpes simplex virus pathogenesis. In this process, the gamma(1)34.5 protein associates with protein phosphatase 1 to form a large complex that dephosphorylates eIF-2alpha and thereby prevents translation shutoff mediated by PKR. Accordingly, gamma(1)34.5 null mutants are virulent in PKR-knockout mice but not in wild-type mice. However, gamma(1)34.5 deletion mutants, with an extragenic compensatory mutation, inhibit PKR activity but remain avirulent, suggesting that the gamma(1)34.5 protein has additional functions. Here, we show that a substitution of the gamma(1)34.5 gene with the NS1 gene from influenza A virus renders viral resistance to interferon involving PKR. The virus replicates as efficiently as wild-type virus in SK-N-SH and CV-1 cells. However, in mouse 3T6 cells, the virus expressing the NS1 protein grows at an intermediate level between the wild-type virus and the gamma(1)34.5 deletion mutant. This decrease in growth, compared to that of the wild-type virus, is due not to an inhibition of viral protein synthesis but rather to a block in virus release or egress. Virus particles are predominantly present in the nucleus and cytoplasm. Notably, deletions in the amino terminus of the gamma(1)34.5 protein lead to a significant decrease in virus growth in mouse 3T6 cells, which is independent of eIF-2alpha dephosphorylation. In correlation, a series of deletions in the amino-terminal domain impair nuclear as well as cytoplasmic egress. These results indicate that efficient viral replication depends on the gamma(1)34.5 functions required to prevent the PKR response and to facilitate virus egress in the different stages during virus infection. 相似文献

The efficacy of toxic baits should be judged by their ability to kill entire ant colonies, including the colony queen or queens. We studied the efficacy of four toxic baits to the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). These baits were Xstinguish that has the toxicant fipronil, Exterm-an-Ant that contains both boric acid and sodium borate, and Advion ant gel and Advion ant bait arena that both have indoxacarb. Experimental nests contained 300 workers and 10 queen ants that were starved for either 24 or 48 h before toxic bait exposure. The efficacy of the toxic baits was strongly influenced by starvation. In no treatment with 24-h starvation did we observe 100% worker death. After 24-h starvation three of the baits did not result in any queen deaths, with only Exterm-an-Ant producing an average of 25% mortality. In contrast, 100% queen and worker mortality was observed in colonies starved for 48 h and given Xstinguish or Exterm-an-Ant. The baits Advion ant gel and Advion ant bait arena were not effective against Argentine ants in these trials, resulting in <60% mortality in all treatments. Because of the strong influence of starvation on bait uptake, control efficacy may be maximized by applying bait when ants are likely to be starved. Our results suggest queen mortality must be assessed in tests for toxic bait efficacy. Our data indicate that of these four baits, Xstinguish and Exterm-an-Ant are the best options for control of Argentine ants in New Zealand. 相似文献

The basal body is a microtubule-organizing center responsible for organizing the cilium, a structure important for cell locomotion and sensing of the surrounding environment. A widely conserved basal body component is the Ca(2+)-binding protein centrin. Analyses of centrin function suggest a role in basal body assembly and stability; however, its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here we describe a mutagenic strategy to study the function and essential nature of the various structural features of Cen1 in the ciliate Tetrahymena. We find that the two domains of Cen1 are both essential, and examination of strains containing mutant CEN1 alleles indicates that there are two predominant basal body phenotypes: misorientation of newly assembled basal bodies and stability defects. The results also show that the two domains of Cen1 are able to bind Ca(2+) and that perturbation of Ca(2+) binding affects Cen1 function. Exposure to environmental contaminants is complicated by factors related to socioeconomic status, diet, and other culturally
conditioned risk behaviors. Determination of a trace element profile in toenails can be used as a tool in biomonitoring the
exposure history or assessing the deficiency of a particular element in a study population, which can lead to a better understanding
of environmental and disease risks. Toenail clippings from 259 Arab Americans (163 adults, 96 children) residing in a highly
industrialized area were analyzed for Al, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, As, Se, Mo, Cd, Ba, Tl, and Pb using an inductively coupled
plasma-mass spectrometer. Mean concentrations were compared with published values, and the influence of age, gender, and other
demographic factors were explored. Elevated levels of Ni in this population warrant further investigation. Significant differences
in the mean concentration of Al, V, Cr, Mn, Cd, Pb, and Se exist between toenails of adults and children. Pearson correlation
coefficients reveal strong significant associations among Cd, Cr, and Tl (p<0.05), in addition to other elements. These investigations provide insight into exposures and factors influencing exposures
in this population while adding to the growing fund of knowledge surrounding use of toenails as a marker of exposure. 相似文献
