In order to examine the likely impacts of climate change on fish stocks, it is necessary to couple the output from large‐scale climate models to fisheries population simulations. Using projections of future North Sea surface temperatures for the period 2000–2050 from the Hadley General Circulation Model, we estimate the likely effects of climate change on the North Sea cod population. Output from the model suggests that increasing temperatures will lead to an increased rate of decline in the North Sea cod population compared with simulations that ignore environmental change. Although the simulation developed here is relatively simplistic, we demonstrate that inclusion of environmental factors in population models can markedly alter one's perception of how the population will behave. The development of simulations incorporating environment effects will become increasingly important as the impacts of climate change on the marine ecosystem become more pronounced.  相似文献

1α,25(OH)2-16-ene-D3, a synthetic analog of the steroid hormone, 1α,25(OH)2D3, has great potential to become a drug in the treatment of leukemia and other proliferative disorders, because of its minimal in vivo calcemic activity associated with a potent inhibitory effect on cell growth. However, at present, the mechanisms through which 1α,25(OH)2-16-ene-D3 expresses its biological activities are still not completely understood. Our previous in vitro study in a perfused rat kidney indicated for the first time that 1α,25(OH)2-16-ene-D3 and 1α,25(OH)2D3 are metabolized differently. 1α,25(OH)2-24-oxo-16-ene-D3, an intermediary metabolite of 1α,25(OH)2-16-ene-D3 formed through the C-24 oxidation pathway, accumulated significantly in the perfusate when compared to 1α,25(OH)2-24-oxo-D3, the corresponding intermediary metabolite of 1α,25(OH)2D3. In a subsequent in vivo study, we also reported that 1α,25(OH)2-24-oxo-16-ene-D3 exerted immunosuppressive activity equal to its parent, without causing significant hypercalcemia. In order to establish further the critical role of 1α,25(OH)2-24-oxo-16-ene-D3, in generating some of the key biological activities ascribed to its parent, we performed the present in vitro study using a human myeloid leukemic cell line (RWLeu-4) as a model. Comparative target tissue metabolism studies indicated that 1α,25(OH)2-16-ene-D3 and 1α,25(OH)2D3 are metabolized differently in RWLeu-4 cells, and the differences were similar to the ones we previously observed in the rat kidney. The significant finding was the accumulation of 1α,25(OH)2-24-oxo-16-ene-D3 in RWLeu-4 cells because of its resistance to further metabolism. Biological activity studies indicated that both 1α,25(OH)2-16-ene-D3 and its 24-oxo metabolite produced growth inhibition and promoted differentiation of RWLeu-4 cells to the same extent, and these activities were several fold higher than those exerted by 1α,25(OH)2D3. In addition, the genomic action of each vitamin D compound was assessed in a rat osteosarcoma cell line (ROS 17/2.8) by measuring its ability to transactivate a gene construct containing the vitamin D response element of the osteocalcin gene linked to the growth hormone reporter gene. In these studies, both 1α,25(OH)2-16-ene-D3 and its 24-oxo metabolite exerted similar but potent transactivation activity which was several fold greater than that exerted by 1α,25(OH)2D3 itself. In summary, our results indicate that the production and slow clearance of the bioactive intermediary metabolite, 1α,25(OH)2-24-oxo-16-ene-D3, in RWLeu-4 cells contributes significantly to the final expression of the enhanced biological activities ascribed to its parent analog, 1α,25(OH)2-16-ene-D3.  相似文献

Abstract. Single species and bivariate distribution patterns in a semi-arid shrubland in southeastern Spain, dominated by the tall leguminous shrub Retama sphaerocarpa, were investigated by second-order spatial analysis based on Ripley's K-function. Shrubs were significantly clumped because of a strong association of dwarf shrubs, mostly Artemisia barrelieri, under the canopy of Retama. Retama shrubs were randomly distributed, but when different size-classes were analysed separately, the pattern changed from significantly clumped to random and then to regular with increasing canopy diameter, suggesting increasing intraspecific competition with shrub size. Artemisia was significantly clumped at all scales because of aggregation under the canopy of large Retama shrubs. The association between the species became stronger with increasing canopy diameter of Retama shrubs, suggesting that facilitation prevailed over interspecific competition because of niche separation in different tiers, both above and below ground. Retama shrub size thus determined both the type of pattern for its own size class and tier, and the scale and intensity of the association with its understorey shrubs.  相似文献

Based on the hypothesis that air contamination is an important cause of peritonitis in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, a simple and cheap connection system was developed whereby a clear polyethylene bag containing an antiseptic gauze was used as a sterilising chamber, effectively enclosing the connection procedure. Seven modifications to the connection technique were introduced over 32 months in 28 patients during 27.9 patient years of experience. The overall rate of peritonitis was 0.6 episode/patient year, but after a final modification at the beginning of the third year the rate fell to 0.17, without a single case of peritonitis occurring attributable to a connection failure in 11.5 patient years. These findings show that in patients receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis peritonitis may be prevented by enclosing the connection process and sterilising the introduced air and tubing ends.  相似文献

Thirty-eight microorganisms were screened for their ability to produce metabolites of the semisynthetic alkaloid, lergotrile. A total of five microorganisms were found to biotransform lergotrile, and N-desmethyl lergotrile was detected as the principal metabolite with most organisms. Streptomyces platensis (NRRL 2364) appeared to form the metabolite in highest yield, and a preparative-scale conversion was accomplished with a recovered yield of 50%. Structure proof was accomplished with comparative thin-layer chromatography, mixed melting point, mass spectrometry, and remethylation to lergotrile.  相似文献

Changes in weight, feeding rate, and sensitivity of some gustatory receptors have been studied over the course of the last larval instar ofSpodoptera exempta. Sucrose, meso-inositol and adenosine were used as the test stimuli on the maxillary sensilla styloconica. Noticeable changes were found only with the response to adenosine, and none of the changes in receptor response were correlated with weight changes, feeding rates, cessation of feeding or transition into the prepupal phase.
Zusammenfassung Veränderungen im Gewicht, in der Futteraufnahme und in der Empfindlichkeit einiger Geschmacksrezeptoren wurden während des letzten Raupenstadiums vonSpodoptera exempta untersucht. Rohrzucker, Meso-Inositol und Adenosin wurden als Testreize für die Sensilla styloconica der Unterkiefer verwendet.Merkliche Veränderungen wurden nur in der Reaktion auf Adenosin gefunden. Keine der Veränderungen der Rezeptorreaktion war korreliert mit Gewichtsveränderungen, mit Futteraufnahme oder mit dem Übergang ins Vorpuppenstadium.
