Climate change greatly influences coffee production, especially in areas infested with plant-parasitic nematodes. In this study, coffee genotypes showed differences in their morphological and physiological characteristics when subjected to a water deficit and parasitism by Meloidogyne paranaensis. The cultivar IPR 100 had the largest superficial and volumetric root system area, even when parasitized. The two progenies (MG 0179-1 and MG 0179-3) and the cultivar Catuaí IAC 62 had a similar surface area (p < .05) when parasitized. However, the root surface area and volume of MG 0179-3 increased by 96% and 400%, respectively, when parasitized by M. paranaensis. On the other hand, Catuaí IAC 62 had a 31% reduction in root surface area. Catuai 62 and IPR 100 showed higher sensitivity to drought when parasitized because of the increased photochemical sensitivity and reduction in photochemical quenching. In MG 0179-1 and MG 0179-3, an increase in non-photochemical quenching occurred in response to stress, indicating that these progenies use a photochemical response to protect photosystem II. In this work, MG 0179-3, which is resistant to M. paranaensis, was remarkable because, interestingly, the infestation caused an increase in its root surface area. In addition, MG 0179-3 had relatively good photochemical performance under water deficit and M. paranaensis parasitism.  相似文献

Consumption of unsafe food is one of the most important public health concerns. Trace elements’ contamination caused by direct or indirect activities of mining industries is of importance in this respect. The present study was conducted to assess the chronic dietary exposure and related health risks of trace elements through the intake of selected vegetables and fruits grown under the impact of mining industry in Syunik region (Armenia). Consumption data were obtained via food frequency questionnaire and the concentrations of Cu, Mo, Ni, Cr, Pb, Zn, Hg, and Cd in different fruits and vegetables were determined. Moreover, by combining concentration data with consumption data, estimated daily intake, and target hazard quotient were assessed for each element. The results obtained showed that mean concentrations for Pb and Hg in some vegetables exceeded maximum acceptable levels set by international organizations. Hazard indexes > 1 have been obtained in some cases indicating that for some vegetables (particularly for potato, carrot, maize, onion leaf, grape, bean, beet, sweet pepper, eggplant, and tomato) habitual consumption has a potential to pose adverse health effect to the local population.  相似文献

Fruit ripening can be seen as an oxidative phenomenon that, depending on its intensity, may directly influence fruit quality. At relatively higher altitudes, coffee fruit ripening takes place through an extended period of time, which positively affects coffee quality. However, little is known about the oxidative processes and antioxidant metabolism of coffee fruits grown at these altitudes. Thus, this study aimed to characterise coffee fruit development from trees grown at two contrasting altitudes (965 m and 1310 m) through phenological analysis and antioxidant metabolism evaluation (Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents; superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity and gene expression). Phenological analysis showed that altitude extended coffee reproductive cycle by a month and promoted a higher ripening uniformity, with 100% of fruits at the ideal ripening stage for harvest (cherry stage) in the last evaluation time. H2O2 and malondialdehyde contents revealed that in both altitudes fruits went through oxidative damage, though in an early manner at the lower altitude. Although gene expression and enzyme activity did not well correlate, the delay in the oxidative damage in fruits of the higher altitude was probably a result of an increased efficiency in H2O2 neutralisation due to the higher activity levels of the APX and CAT enzymes, mainly in green fruits. Thus, a better removal of reactive oxygen species in coffee fruits from plants grown at higher altitudes is involved in the extension of the coffee reproductive cycle, contributing to the production of a higher cup quality coffee.  相似文献

Aim

To evaluate biochemical and physiological impacts of magnesium-deficiency on seedlings of two cultivars (Catuaí and Acaiá) of Coffea arabica L..

Methods

Six month old seedlings from both cultivars were transferred to plastic receptacles containing solutions with different concentrations of magnesium (Mg). Fully expanded leaves and roots were evaluated at the beginning of treatment and after 10, 20 and 30 days for chlorophyll and carotenoid content, biomass allocation, partitioning of carbohydrates and antioxidant metabolism.

Results

Mg-deficiency was characterized by an increase in the shoot/root dry weight ratio, which may be related to accumulation of carbohydrates in leaves. This accumulation is probably responsible for triggering a reduction in the consumption of reducing equivalents, providing favorable conditions for the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The increase in ROS production was accompanied by increases in ascorbate concentration and enzyme activity of the antioxidant metabolism.

Conclusions

The Catuaí cultivar is more sensitive to Mg-deficiency than the Acaiá cultivar. When exposed to magnesium deficiency the Catuaí cultivar had reduced growth and its antioxidant metabolism was less efficient at removing ROS.  相似文献

Fruits and vegetables grown under the impact of Armenia’s mining industry are widely sold in markets of adjacent towns. As the share of fruits and vegetables in Armenians’ diet is significant, the present study aims to assess the dietary exposure of potentially toxic trace elements through the intake of fruits and vegetables sold in Kapan town, located in the biggest mining region of Armenia. The concentrations of Cu, Mo, Ni, Cr, Pb, Zn, Hg, As, and Cd in 15 types of fruits and vegetables were determined. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were assessed. Although the estimated daily intakes of trace elements for each studied food item did not exceed health-based guidelines values, in case of the combined consumption of fruits and vegetables estimated cumulative daily intakes exceeded reference doses for Cu and Mo. Moreover, carcinogenic risk for the majority of fruits and vegetables exceeded the EPA recommended risk level of 10−6, indicating adverse health effect to local population. The outcomes of this study can serve as a basis for further research that will consider many other exposure pathways (i.e., inhalation or dermal pathways) in order to ensure the safety of the residents living under the impact of mining industry.

Background

While hemispheric specialization of language processing is well established, lateralization of emotion processing is still under debate. Several conflicting hypotheses have been proposed, including right hemisphere hypothesis, valence asymmetry hypothesis and region-specific lateralization hypothesis. However, experimental evidence for these hypotheses remains inconclusive, partly because direct comparisons between hemispheres are scarce.

Methods

The present fMRI study systematically investigated functional lateralization during affective stimulus processing in 36 healthy participants. We normalized our functional data on a symmetrical template to avoid confounding effects of anatomical asymmetries. Direct comparison of BOLD responses between hemispheres was accomplished taking two approaches: a hypothesis-driven region of interest analysis focusing on brain areas most frequently reported in earlier neuroimaging studies of emotion; and an exploratory whole volume analysis contrasting non-flipped with flipped functional data using paired t-test.

Results

The region of interest analysis revealed lateralization towards the left in the medial prefrontal cortex (BA 10) during positive stimulus processing; while negative stimulus processing was lateralized towards the right in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (BA 9 & 46) and towards the left in the amygdala and uncus. The whole brain analysis yielded similar results and, in addition, revealed lateralization towards the right in the premotor cortex (BA 6) and the temporo-occipital junction (BA 19 & 37) during positive stimulus processing; while negative stimulus processing showed lateralization towards the right in the temporo-parietal junction (BA 37,39,42) and towards the left in the middle temporal gyrus (BA 21).

Conclusion

Our data suggests region-specific functional lateralization of emotion processing. Findings show valence asymmetry for prefrontal cortical areas and left-lateralized negative stimulus processing in subcortical areas, in particular, amygdala and uncus.  相似文献

Bacterial contribution to oral disease has been studied in young children, but there is a lack of data addressing the developmental perspective in edentulous infants. Our primary objectives were to use pyrosequencing to phylogenetically characterize the salivary bacterial microbiome of edentulous infants and to make comparisons against their mothers. Saliva samples were collected from 5 edentulous infants (mean age?=?4.6±1.2 mo old) and their mothers or primary care givers (mean age?=?30.8±9.5 y old). Salivary DNA was extracted, used to generate DNA amplicons of the V4-V6 hypervariable region of the bacterial 16S rDNA gene, and subjected to 454-pyrosequencing. On average, over 80,000 sequences per sample were generated. High bacterial diversity was noted in the saliva of adults [1012 operational taxonomical units (OTU) at 3% divergence] and infants (578 OTU at 3% divergence). Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria were predominant bacterial phyla present in all samples. A total of 397 bacterial genera were present in our dataset. Of the 28 genera different (P<0.05) between infants and adults, 27 had a greater prevalence in adults. The exception was Streptococcus, which was the predominant genera in infant saliva (62.2% in infants vs. 20.4% in adults; P<0.05). Veillonella, Neisseria, Rothia, Haemophilus, Gemella, Granulicatella, Leptotrichia, and Fusobacterium were also predominant genera in infant samples, while Haemophilus, Neisseria, Veillonella, Fusobacterium, Oribacterium, Rothia, Treponema, and Actinomyces were predominant in adults. Our data demonstrate that although the adult saliva bacterial microbiome had a greater OTU count than infants, a rich bacterial community exists in the infant oral cavity prior to tooth eruption. Streptococcus, Veillonella, and Neisseria are the predominant bacterial genera present in infants. Further research is required to characterize the development of oral microbiota early in life and identify environmental factors that impact colonization and oral and gastrointestinal disease risk.  相似文献
