Abstract The gonochoristic syllid Petitia amphophthalma is one of the truly interstitial polychaetes. P. amphophthalma does not show any epitokous modifications at maturity such as those that usually occur in syllids. The reproductive structures are unique: the male genital organs consist of a seminal vesicle in chaetigers 6–10, subdivided into a dorsal part tightly filled with spermatozoa and a ventral part with contents in different stages of spermatogenesis, one pair of sperm ducts and conspicuous gland cells situated in chaetigers 10 and 11. Their glandular secretions are discharged into the sperm duct together with those of other types of gland cells that form the duct. The oocytes develop freely within the body cavity of the females. Each of the fertile segments possesses a paired oviduct ending in a large ciliated funnel. Sperm ducts and oviducts are probably modifications of excretory organs; nephridia are absent in segments where gonoducts occur. A direct sperm transfer by lytic opening of the integument of the female and internal fertilization are inferred. The microbial community of a denitrifying sand filter in a municipal wastewater treatment plant was examined by conventional and molecular techniques to identify the bacteria actively involved in the removal of nitrate. In this system, denitrification is carried out as the last step of water treatment by biofilms growing on quartz grains with methanol as a supplemented carbon source. The biofilms are quite irregular, having a median thickness of 13 to 20 microns. Fatty acid analysis of 56 denitrifying isolates indicated the occurrence of Paracoccus spp. in the sand filter. 16S rRNA-targeted probes were designed for this genus and the species cluster Paracoccus denitrificans-Paracoccus versutus and tested for specificity by whole-cell hybridization. Stringency requirements for the probes were adjusted by use of a formamide concentration gradient to achieve complete discrimination of even highly similar target sequences. Whole-cell hybridization confirmed that members of the genus Paracoccus were abundant among the isolates. Twenty-seven of the 56 isolates hybridized with the genus-specific probes. In situ hybridization identified dense aggregates of paracocci in detached biofilms. Probes complementary to the type strains of P. denitrificans and P. versutus did not hybridize to cells in the biofilms, suggesting the presence of a new Paracoccus species in the sand filter. Analysis using confocal laser scanning microscopy detected spherical aggregates of morphologically identical cells exhibiting a uniform fluorescence. Cell quantification was performed after thorough disruption of the biofilms and filtration onto polycarbonate filters. An average of 3.5% of total cell counts corresponded to a Paracoccus sp., whereas in a parallel sand filter with no supplemented methanol, and no measurable denitrification, only very few paracocci (0.07% of cells stained with 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) could be detected. Hyphomicrobium spp. constituted approximately 2% of all cells in the denitrifying unit and could not be detected in the regular sand filter. This clear link between in situ abundance and denitrification suggests an active participation of paracocci and hyphomicrobia in the process. Possible selective advantages favoring the paracocci in this habitat are discussed.  相似文献

The classical Nicholson-Bailey model for a two species host-parasitoid system with discrete generations assumes random distributions of both hosts and parasitoids, randomly searching parasitoids, and random encounters between the individuals of the two species. Although unstable, this model induced many investigations into more complex host-parasitoid systems. Local linearized stability analysis shows that equilibria of host parasitoid systems within the framework of a generalized Nicholson-Bailey model are generally unstable. Stability is only possible if host fertility does not exceede 4=54.5982 and if superparasitism is unsuccessful. This special situation has already been discovered by Hassell et al. (1983) in their study of the effects of variable sex ratios on host parasitoid dynamics. We discuss global behaviour of the Hassell-Waage-May model using KAM-theory and illustrate its sensitivity to small perturbations, which can give rise to radically different patterns of the population dynamics of interacting hosts and parasitoids.  相似文献

We studied grooming among adults of a one-male multifemale troop of free-ranging Hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus)living near Jodhpur, India, for 9 years. The 11–13 females devoted about 6% of their day to allogrooming. Adult males, whose tenures averaged 2.2 years, were transient figures in the troop's history, as reflected by their rather peripheral role in the grooming network. Females groomed males 4–40 times more frequently (1006 episodes) than vice versa- (176 episodes). Adult females received 97% of all grooming from other adult females (6655 episodes). Although females exhibited an age- inversed dominance hierarchy, they did not compete for grooming access to particular troop mates. Dyads of all possible rank differences occurred as frequently as expected: 51% of grooming was directed up the hierarchy and 49% down it. Young, high- ranking individuals gave and received significantly more grooming than the oldest, low- ranking females did. The pattern seemed to be influenced by kin selection because of the presumably high degree of female relatedness. They invested most in troopmates with the highest reproductive value, i.e., the youngest individuals. This trend was coupled with a preference of closest kin (mothers and daughters). Reciprocity was the outstanding feature since all adult females groomed and were groomed by all others. Such a tight social net might establish the necessary cohesion during frequent territorial disputes with neighboring troops.  相似文献

Visceral obese men were characterized by a decreased total GH secretion and diminished peak amplitude, size, and number. T-substitution was followed by elevation of IGF-I levels. The IGF-I increase correlated with the elevation of T-concentration, and was most pronounced in men with the lowest concentrations of free T from the outset. There were no detectable changes in total quantity, amplitude, size or number of peaks of GH secretion. Glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides as well as diastolic blood pressure decreased. There were no changes in thyroid or hematology variables. Visceral obesity in men has been reported to be characterized by low testosterone (T) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) concentrations, the latter suggesting a relative growth hormone (GH) deficiency. Since T and GH-secretions are interrelated, men with visceral obesity were substituted with T for 14 days, and diurnal secretion pattern of GH as well as IGF-I concentrations, and metabolic variables were followed. T-substitution of visceral obese men is followed by an elevation of IGF-I concentrations. It is suggested that this might be due either to minor, non-detectable increases in GH secretion, or to direct effects of T on IGF-I concentrations. The regulatory mechanisms by which T-administration are leading to metabolic and anthropometric improvements, might be direct effects of T, with or without mediation via GH secretion.  相似文献

Techniques for the determination of viability of field-collected vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal spores must be valid for spores of different ages and of varying levels of peridium (outer wall of unispored sporocarp) development. The use of the dehydrogenase-activated stain 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) for determining viability of endogonaceous spores was reassessed. Freshly isolated and stored spores of three isolates of Glomus mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.) Gerd. & Trappe were stained using two different protocols: Miller, Torres, and McClean (Mycological Research, in press) and An and Hendrix (Mycologia 80: 259–261). Time course results from selected experiments were analyzed graphically, and pooled results from all experiments were analyzed by factorial analysis of variance to determine statistically significant differences among the protocols, storage regime of spores, control killing method, and the effect of added cobalt ions. Significant nondehydrogenase-specific staining occurred in both types of controls of freshly isolated spores using Miller, Torres, and McClean's method, rendering it inadequate for viability determination. With An and Hendrix's protocol, fresh nonkilled spores stained significantly more than ethanol-treated spores, although these results underestimated viability as determined by two other assessment procedures, and autoclaving of fresh spores was not a satisfactory control treatment. Addition of cobalt to the incubation solution effectively drove all formazan production to the blue color but did not change the total percentage of colored spores produced, regardless of protocol used. Results corroborate the use of An and Hendrix's protocol with stored spores if color interpretation was corrected to include both blue and red colors as indicators of viability, results were read before nonspecific staining starts, and timing was extended to 75 hours. Both staining methods work with uniformly stored spores using specific incubation times, but not with spores of mixed ages, which could include young spores, making MTT not useful as a viability stain for field-isolated spores.  相似文献

Western immunoblot analysis of protein extracts prepared from epidermal peels, whole leaves, and mesophyll protoplasts with ubiquitin and PEPCase antibodies indicated ubiquitinated PEPCase bands and degradation products only in crude extracts which have been obtained in the presence of the proteolysis inhibitors leupeptin and hemin. After ammonium sulfate precipitation and further purification, PEPCase forms were stable and not ubiquitinated. It is assumed, that only a certain part of PEPCase is degraded via the ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis.  相似文献

A role for circadian neuroendocrine rhythms in the age-related development of obesity and insulin resistance was investigated in the male Sprague-Dawley rat. The phases and amplitudes of the plasma rhythms of several metabolic hormones (i.e. corticosterone, prolactin, insulin, and triiodothyronine) differed in lean, insulin-sensitive (3-week-old rats). insulin-resistant (8-week-old rats) and obese, insulin-resistant (44-week-old rats) animals. Simulation of the daily rhythms of endogenous corticosterone and prolactin by daily injections of the hormones at times corresponding to the peak levels found in 3-week-old rats reversed age-related increases in insulin resistance and body fat in older (5-6-month-old) rats. Ten such daily injections of corticosterone and prolactin in 12-14-week-old rats produced long-term reductions in body fat stores (30%). plasma insulin concentration (40%'). and insulin resistance (60%) (determined by a glucose tolerance test) measured 11-14 weeks after the treatment. Alterations in circadian neuroendocrine rhythms may account for age-related changes in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the male Sprague-Dawley rat, and resetting of these rhythms by appropriately timed daily injections of corticosterone and prolactin may help maintain metabolism characteristic of younger animals.  相似文献
