Preventive and Curative Biological Treatments for Control of Botrytis cinerea Stem Canker of Greenhouse Tomatoes

The effects of biological treatments with PlantShield^®, Prestop^®, Quadra 136, RootShield^®, and S33 (Rhodosporidium diobovatum) and chemical treatment with Decree^® applied as a preventive or curative sprays on stem canker caused by Botrytis cinerea on tomato plants grown in sawdust were studied under near-commercial greenhouse conditions. Prestop^® and Decree^®, applied as preventive or curative sprays, PlantShield^® applied as curative spray, and S33 and Q-136 applied as preventive or preventive plus one spray to wounded surface provided season-long protection from B. cinerea stem canker. These treatments also increased fruit yield and decreased the number of dead plants compared with the inoculated control.     

Time-of-day dependent performance efficiency in student nurses

A psychological test battery comprising reasoning ability, name and number checking, letter cancellation and associative recall was administered to a group of 70 student nurses at 2-hr intervals from 0800 to 2000 to determine if their performance varied at different times of day. Simultaneously, their oral temperature was recorded. A 7 x 7 latin square design was utilized, and latin square repeated measure analysis of variance was employed. The results indicated variations in oral temperature as the day advanced. While accuracy of performance in cognitive tasks was found to be superior during the early morning, noon or early evening hours, the speed of performance was highest during the period from late-morning to late-evening.     

Thorium induced testicular changes in rats.

Daily intraperitoneal administration of thorium nitrate produced progressive morphological and biochemical alterations with the increase in thorium concentration in rat testis. The degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules increased with the duration of treatment and after 90 days calcification occurred in about 25% of the tubules and in the connective tissue of the tunica albuginea. The activity of adenosine triphosphatase and alkaline phosphatase increased markedly as a result of thorium administration. An attempt has been made to interrelate histopathological and enzymatic changes and the metal concentration in the testicular tissue.     

Blue guaran (a chromophore-labeled galactomannan) as a reagent for lectins

A new reagent (blue guaran) for quantitative estimation of lectins, has been derived from a galactomannan (guaran). When the lectin solution is added to an aqueous solution of blue guaran, dye-bound guaran is precipitated from the solution. The difference in absorbance of the blue guaran solution before and after the addition of lectin solution is proportional to the amount of lectin present in the sample. The method of preparation of blue guaran, its spectral characteristics and effect of pH on precipitation have also been described. It gives a simple colorimetric method for the estimation of galactose-specific lectins.     

Isolation, screening and characterization of thermophilic Bacillus species isolated from dairy products

Proteolytic thermophilic bacterial cultures (171 strains) were isolated from different milk and milk products. After screening these isolates for protease production in a liquid medium, fifty that exhibited enzyme activity in excess of 100 units/ml were selected and identified. Twenty-nine were Bacillus stearothermophilus (constituting 58% of the total), twelve were B. coagulans , five were B. circulans and four were B. licheniformis . Skim milk powder contributed the maximum number of B. stearothermophilus (64.7%) followed by raw milk (63.2%) and pasteurized milk (44.4%). When the culture supernatant liquids from the selected isolates were given heat treatment, five cultures retained 100% protease activity at 65°C for 30 min. Protease of B. stearothermophilus RM-67 had the maximum heat resistance because it retained 87.5% of its activity at 70°C for 30 min.     

Two forms of acid alpha-D-mannosidase in monkey brain: evidence for the co-existence of high mannose and complex oligosaccharides in one form

Lysosomal alpha-D-mannosidase of monkey brain existed in two forms. One form of mannosidase was bound to the Ricinus communis agglutinin120 (RCA1)-Sepharose and could be specifically eluted with lactose. The other form did not bind to the RCA1-Sepharose. Both forms of mannosidase could bind to a similar extent to the immobilized brain lysosomal receptor protein. Both the forms were purified to apparent homogeneity. Neutral sugar analysis by GLC showed the presence of glucose, mannose and galactose in the RCA1-Sepharose bindable mannosidase and glucose and mannose in the non-bindable mannosidase. Several other brain lysosomal hydrolases did not bind to the RCA1-Sepharose. The results suggested the existence of only high mannose oligosaccharides in the RCA1 non-bindable mannosidase and both high mannose and complex oligosaccharides in the bindable mannosidase.     

Characterization of the Ehrlich ascites tumor plasma lipoproteins.

1. The lipoproteins of the Ehrlich ascites tumor plasma were separated into 3 distinct fractions, very low density, low density and high density lipoproteins by preparative ultracentrifugation combined with agarose column chromatography. 2. High density lipoproteins contained 74% of the total protein in the lipoproteins. By contrast, most of the lipids were present in the very low density lipoprotein fraction. 3. The fatty acid compositions of the cholesteryl esters were appreciably different in the very low, low and high density lipoproteins, whereas phospholipid and triacylglycerol fatty acid compositions were quite similar in the 3 lipoprotein fractions. 4. Very low and high density apoprotein electrophoretic patterns on sodium dodecyl sulfate-acrylamide gels were similar to those observed in the corresponding lipoprotein fractions obtained from other mammalian species. The low density fraction, however, contained 7 apoprotein bands, and 32% of the low density apoprotein was soluble in tetramethyl urea. 5. The average molecular weights as determined by analytical ultracentrifugation were 2-10(7) (very low density), 6-10(6) (low density) and 4.4-10(5) (high density).     

GMF-Knockout Mice are Unable to Induce Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor after Exercise

We earlier reported that overexpression of glia maturation factor (GMF) in cultured astrocytes enhances the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The current study was conducted to find out whether BDNF production is impaired in animals devoid of GMF. To this end GMF-knockout (KO) mice were subjected to exercise and the neurotrophin mRNAs were determined by real-time RT-PCR. Compared to wild-type (WT) mice, there is a decrease in exercise-induced BDNF in the KO mice. The observation was correlated with the finding that, in WT mice, exercise increases GMF expression. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that GMF is necessary for exercise-induction of BDNF, and that GMF may promote neuroprotection through BDNF production.
