We studied the zooplankton community structure in a set of 33 interconnected shallow ponds that are restricted to a relatively small area (`De Maten', Genk, Belgium, 200 ha). As the ponds share the same water source, geology and history, and as the ponds are interconnected (reducing chance effects of dispersal with colonisation), differences in zooplankton community structure can be attributed to local biotic and abiotic interactions. We studied zooplankton community, biotic (phytoplankton, macrophyte cover, fish densities, macroinvertebrate densities), abiotic (turbidity, nutrient concentrations, pH, conductivity, iron concentration) and morphometric (depth, area, perimeter) characteristics of the different ponds. Our results indicate that the ponds differ substantially in their zooplankton community structure, and that these differences are strongly related to differences in trophic structure and biotic interactions, in concordance with the theory of alternative equilibria. Ponds in the clear-water state are characterised by large Daphnia species and species associated with the littoral zone, low chlorophyll-a concentrations, low fish densities and high macroinvertebrate densities. Ponds in the turbid-water state are characterised by high abundances of rotifers, cyclopoid copepods and the opposite environmental conditions. Some ponds show an intermediate pattern, with a dominance of small Daphnia species. Our results show that interconnected ponds may differ strongly in zooplankton community composition, and that these differences are related to differences in predation intensity (top-down) and habitat diversity (macrophyte cover).  相似文献

Fish play a key role in the trophic dynamics of lakes, not least in shallow systems. With climate warming, complex changes in fish community structure may be expected owing to the direct and indirect effects of temperature, and indirect effects of eutrophication, water-level changes and salinisation on fish metabolism, biotic interactions and geographical distribution. We review published and new data supporting the hypotheses that, with a warming climate, there will be changes in: fish community structure (e.g. higher or lower richness depending on local conditions); life history traits (e.g. smaller body size, shorter life span, earlier and less synchronised reproduction); feeding mode (i.e. increased omnivory and herbivory); behaviour (i.e. stronger association with littoral areas and a greater proportion of benthivores); and winter survival. All these changes imply higher predation on zooplankton and macroinvertebrates with increasing temperatures, suggesting that the changes in the fish communities partly resemble, and may intensify, the effects triggered by eutrophication. Modulating factors identified in cold and temperate systems, such as the presence of submerged plants and winter ice cover, seem to be weaker or non-existent in warm(ing) lakes. Consequently, in the future lower nutrient thresholds may be needed to obtain clear-water conditions and good ecological status in the future in currently cold or temperate lakes. Although examples are still scarce and more research is needed, we foresee biomanipulation to be a less successful restoration tool in warm(ing) lakes without a strong reduction of the nutrient load.  相似文献

The superiority of large zooplankton in suppressingphytoplankton growth has often been inferred from theSize Efficiency Hypothesis (S.E.H.). The S.E.H. hasoriginally been formulated to account for thecompetitive superiority of large to small zooplanktonunder food limiting conditions. Extrapolation of itspredictions to the suppression of phytoplankton byzooplankton under high food availability, should bedone with care. In an attempt to assess the relevanceof the S.E.H. to biomanipulation theory inhypertrophic systems, a fish exclosure experiment wascarried out in which the efficiency of two differentlystructured zooplankton communities in reducingphytoplankton biomass was examined. By inoculatingpart of the enclosures with laboratory grownDaphnia magna, a community dominated by this largecladoceran species could be compared with a communitymainly consisting of Bosmina and smallerDaphnia species. After the exclusion of fish, therewas an exponential increase of total zooplanktonbiomass. Phytoplankton growth was efficientlysuppressed to equal levels in both treatments, thoughthere was a difference in timing: chlorophyll-a levelsin the enclosures inoculated with D. magnadropped one week earlier than in non-inoculatedenclosures. The time-lag was even more pronounced whenlarge phytoplankton was considered. In accordance withthe S.E.H., the time lags could be explained bydifferences in population growth potential as well asby differences in zooplankton grazing rates(indirectly measured as the minimal zooplanktonbiomass needed to suppress phytoplankton growth) andfood particle size range.  相似文献

Egg-to-adult viability of sexual offspring in Daphnia magna is lower for selfed (average: 43.0%) than for outcrossed families (average: 74.7%). This suggests that intraclonal mating is not the rule in Daphnia populations. For a given family, hatching rate of eggs resulting from interpopulation crosses is lower than for intrapopulation crosses. This breakdown in hatching responses may result in the effective gene flow between Daphnia populations being severely reduced, offering an explanation for the apparent paradox of genetic differentiation of Daphnia populations in spite of efficient dispersal.  相似文献

1. Only a few studies have compared patterns of genetic variation among populations of different Daphnia species on a regional scale. The present study addresses this gap and examines the relationship between diversity as revealed by allozyme variation and habitat size for populations of Daphnia pulex, D. obtusa and D. curvirostris in Flanders (Belgium). In addition, we examined whether patterns of isolation‐by‐distance could be observed in each of these three Daphnia species. 2. The relationship between genetic diversity and habitat size varied among Daphnia species that occur in the same region. In D. pulex and D. obtusa populations, a positive relationship between local genetic diversity and habitat size was found, whereas the relationship was negative in D. curvirostris populations. 3. Regional genetic diversity was lower than expected from patterns of local genetic diversity in D. pulex and D. obtusa populations in Flanders. This suggests that the subdivision of local Daphnia populations in a region did not obviously increase genetic diversity. 4. Genetic differentiation among populations of these three species in Flanders was moderate and comparable with values observed in other Daphnia species. Patterns of isolation‐by‐distance could be observed, but the scatter was high (D. pulex) or the slope was very low (D. obtusa).  相似文献

Only recently ecologists started treating the previously separately considered benthic, littoral and pelagic zones of lake ecosystems as closely connected compartments. Here we study a link between organisms belonging to a different compartment – namely the pelagic and the littoral – through behavior in a series of laboratory experiments. Waterfleas of the genus Daphnia are inhabitants of the pelagic zone and suffer a high predation pressure from syntopic vertebrate predators (mainly fish). Presumably to escape this predation, they sometimes migrate in the day to the littoral to seek refuge within macrophytes and return to the pelagic at night. Zygopterans from the genus Ischnura do commonly co-occur in ponds with Daphnia and are known as opportunistic predators of Daphnia . In two initial experiments in microcosms in the lab we showed that Ischnura larvae are littoral predators strongly associated with macrophytes. Although we found that predation rates of individual Ischnura larvae on Daphnia are approximately 1.5 fold lower in macrophytes compared to open water, total predation from Ischnura on Daphnia per unit area is tenfold higher within macrophytes than in open water, making the open water a safer place for Daphnia with regard to Ischnura predation. In a third microcosm experiment we monitored horizontal distribution of Daphnia in the absence, presence and odor only of Ischnura larvae. After 2 hours, on average 10% less Daphnia remained within the vegetation when Ischnura larvae or only their odor were present compared to when Ischnura or their odor were absent. We interpret this as a behavioral anti-predation response of Daphnia to the presence of Ischnura larvae that seems primarily chemically mediated. The observed horizontal migration of the pelagic prey driven by the littoral predator may couple both lake compartments and may interact with the predator–prey relationships within the pelagic.  相似文献

Although predation is a strong selection pressure, little is known about the molecular mechanisms to cope with predator stress. This is crucial to understanding of the mechanisms and constraints involved in the evolution of antipredator traits. We quantified the expression of heat-shock protein 60 (Hsp60), a potential marker for predator stress, in four clones of the water flea Daphnia magna, when exposed to fish kairomones. Expression of Hsp60 induction increased after 6 h and returned to base levels after 24 h of predator stress. This suggests that it is a costly transient mechanism to temporarily cope with novel predator stress, before other defences are induced. We found genetic variation in the fixed levels and in the fish-induced levels of Hsp60, which seemed to be linked to each clone's history of fish predation. Our data suggest that Hsp60 can be considered part of a multiple-trait antipredator defence strategy of Daphnia clones to cope with predator stress.  相似文献

Laguna Bufeos is a floodplain lake of the river Ichilo, a tributary of the Amazon basin situated in Bolivia. Nutrient addition assays involving whole water (<200 μm) as well as fractionated water (<0.8 μm) treatments were carried out in incubation tubes to test whether bacterial growth is limited by the availability of inorganic nutrients and to test whether bacteria are able to utilize inorganic nutrients directly or are stimulated by inorganic nutrients through increased production of phytoplankton. The assays were carried out during two extreme hydrological conditions, the high-water and the low-water period. During the high-water period experiment, neither N or P limited bacterial growth rates. During the low-water period, bacterial growth was P limited. Bacterial growth was stimulated in the fractionated as well as in the whole water treatments, indicating that bacterial growth was directly stimulated by P. Bacterial growth corrected for grazing losses (determined by means of dilution experiments) was significantly higher in the fractionated water containing only bacteria when compared to the whole water containing also grazers and phytoplankton. This suggests that bacterial growth was suppressed by competition with phytoplankton rather than stimulated through the production of dissolved organic matter by phytoplankton.  相似文献

In plants, the proton pump-ATPase (H(+)-ATPase) of the plasma membrane is encoded by a multigene family. The PMA2 (plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase) isoform from Nicotiana plumbaginifolia was previously shown to be capable of functionally replacing the yeast H(+)-ATPase, provided that the external pH was kept above pH 5.5. In this study, we used a positive selection to isolate 19 single point mutations of PMA2 which permit the growth of yeast cells at pH 4.0. Thirteen mutations were restricted to the C-terminus region, but another six mutations were found in four other regions of the enzyme. Kinetic studies determined on nine mutated PMA2 compared with the wild-type PMA2 revealed an activated enzyme characterized by an alkaline shift of the optimum pH and a slightly higher specific ATPase activity. However, the most striking difference was a 2- to 3-fold increase of H(+)-pumping in both reconstituted vesicles and intact cells. These results indicate that point mutations in various domains of the plant H(+)-ATPase improve the coupling between H(+)-pumping and ATP hydrolysis, resulting in better growth at low pH. Moreover, the yeast cells expressing the mutated PMA2 showed a marked reduction in the frequency of internal membrane proliferation seen with the strain expressing the wild-type PMA2, indicating a relationship between H(+)-ATPase activity and perturbations of the secretory pathway.  相似文献

We have tested for evidence of linkage between the genetic loci determining concentrations and composition of plasma high density lipoproteins (HDL) with the genes for the major apolipoproteins and enzymes participating in lipoprotein metabolism. These genes include those encoding various apolipoproteins (apo), including apoA-I, apoA-II, apoA-IV, apoB, apoC-I, apoC-II, apoC-III, apoE, and apo(a), cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), HDL-binding protein, lipoprotein lipase, and the low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor. Polymorphisms of these genes, and nearby highly polymorphic simple sequence repeat markers, were examined by quantitative sib-pair linkage analysis in 30 coronary artery disease families consisting of a total of 366 individuals. Evidence for linkage was observed between a marker locus D16S313 linked to the CETP locus and a locus determining plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration (P = 0.002), and the genetic locus for apoA-II and a locus determining the levels of the major apolipoproteins of HDL, apoA-I and apoA-II (P = 0.009 and 0.02, respectively). HDL level was also influenced by the variation at the apo(a) locus on chromosome 6 (P = 0.02). Thus, these data indicate the simultaneous involvement of at least two different genetic loci in the determination of the levels of HDL and its associated lipoproteins.  相似文献
