The hunting strategies of pelagic thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus) were investigated at Pescador Island in the Philippines. It has long been suspected that thresher sharks hunt with their scythe-like tails but the kinematics associated with the behaviour in the wild are poorly understood. From 61 observations recorded by handheld underwater video camera between June and October 2010, 25 thresher shark shunting events were analysed. Thresher sharks employed tail-slaps to debilitate sardines at all times of day. Hunting events comprised preparation, strike, wind-down recovery and prey item collection phases, which occurred sequentially. Preparation phases were significantly longer than the others, presumably to enable a shark to windup a tail-slap. Tail-slaps were initiated by an adduction of the pectoral fins, a manoeuvre that changed a thresher shark''s pitch promoting its posterior region to lift rapidly, and stall its approach. Tail-slaps occurred with such force that they may have caused dissolved gas to diffuse out of the water column forming bubbles. Thresher sharks were able to consume more than one sardine at a time, suggesting that tail-slapping is an effective foraging strategy for hunting schooling prey. Pelagic thresher sharks appear to pursue sardines opportunistically by day and night, which may make them vulnerable to fisheries. Alopiids possess specialist pectoral and caudal fins that are likely to have evolved, at least in part, for tail-slapping. The evidence is now clear; thresher sharks really do hunt with their tails.  相似文献

Concerted changes in flower morphology and pollinators provide strong evidence on adaptive evolution. Schizanthus (Solanaceae) has zygomorphic flowers and consists of 12 species of annual or biennial herbs that are distributed mainly in Chile and characterized by bee-, hummingbird-, and moth-pollination syndromes. To infer whether flowers diversified in relation to pollinator shifts, we traced the evolutionary trajectory of flower traits and visitors onto a phylogeny based on sequence data from ITS, waxy, and trnF/ndhJ DNA. Maximum-likelihood ancestral reconstruction of floral traits suggests that ancestral Schizanthus had a bee-pollination syndrome. The hummingbird syndrome evolved in S. grahamii, a high elevation species in the Andes. The moth syndrome evolved in the ancestor of three species that inhabit the Atacama Desert. Results of mapping flower visitors onto the phylogeny show that the shift from bee to hummingbird pollination concurred with a shift in pollinators as predicted by the syndromes. However, the same pattern was not found for the moth syndrome. Visits by moths were observed only in one of the three moth-syndrome species, and at a very low rate. This mismatch suggests either anachronic floral characters or maintenance of rare, imperceptible moth pollination backed up by capacity for autonomous selfing. Overall, results suggest that diversification of flower traits in Schizanthus has occurred in relation to pollinator shifts.  相似文献

Introduction

Autoantibodies in patients with polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM) are associated with unique subsets, clinical course and outcome. Anti-MJ antibodies, which recognize the nuclear protein NXP-2/MORC3, are reported in ~25% of juvenile DM. Prevalence and clinical significance of anti-MJ antibodies in adult Italian PM/DM patients were studied.

Methods

Sera from 58 consecutive adult Italian PM/DM patients were analyzed by immunoprecipitation of 35S-labeled K562 cells extract, ELISA (anti-MJ, Jo-1), Western blot and indirect immunofluorescence. Clinical associations were analyzed using information from medical charts.

Results

Anti-MJ antibodies were the most prevalent specificity (17%) found mainly in DM (30%, 8 cases) vs 8% of PM (2 cases, P = 0.02). Comparing 10 anti-MJ (+) vs 48 anti-MJ (-) cases, DM was more common (P = 0.03), and age at onset was younger in anti-MJ (+) (P = 0.0006). In anti-MJ (+), heliotrope rash (P = 0.01) and calcinosis (P = 0.09) were more frequent. None of them had heart or lung involvement, or malignancy. Myopathy in anti-MJ (+) patients responded well to therapy and none of them had elevated CPK at last visit (0% vs 25% in anti-MJ (-)). Only 60% of anti-MJ (+) showed immunofluorescent nuclear dots staining, despite PML localization of NXP-2/MORC3.

Conclusions

Anti-MJ antibodies are the most frequent specificity in our cohort of adult Italian PM/DM. Anti-MJ (+) were associated with young onset DM, calcinosis, no internal organ involvement and good response of myopathy to therapy. Anti-MJ reported in juvenile DM is also found in adult PM/DM, and could be a new useful biomarker.  相似文献

Quantitative proteomics and absolute determination of proteins are topics of fast growing interest, since only the quantity of proteins or changes in their abundance reflect the status and extent of changes of a given biological system. Quantification of the desired proteins has been carried out by molecule specific MS techniques, but relative quantifications are commonplace so far even resorting to stable isotope labelling techniques such as ICAT and SILAC. In the last decade the idea of using element-selective mass spectrometric detection (e.g. ICP-MS instruments) to achieve absolute quantification has been realised and ICP-MS stands now as a new tool in the field of quantitative proteomics.In this review the emerging role of ICP-MS in protein and proteomic analysis is highlighted. The potential of ICP-MS methods and strategies for screening multiple heteroatoms (e.g. S, P, Se, metals) in proteins and their mixtures and extraordinary capabilities to tackle the problem of absolute protein quantifications, via heteroatom determinations, are discussed and illustrated. New avenues are also open derived from the use of ICP-MS for precise isotope abundance measurements in polyisotopic heteroatoms. The “heteroatom (isotope)-tagged proteomics” concept is focused on the use of naturally present element tags and also extended to any protein by resorting to bioconjugation reactions (i.e. labelling sought proteins and peptides with ICP-MS detectable heteroatoms). A major point of this review is displaying the possibilities of using a “hard” ion source, the ICP, to complement well-established “soft” ion sources for mass spectrometry to tackle present proteomic analysis.  相似文献

Consideration of complex geographic patterns of reciprocal adaptation has provided insight into new features of the coevolutionary process. In this paper, we provide ecological, historical, and geographical evidence for coevolution under complex temporal and spatial scenarios that include intermittent selection, species turnover across localities, and a range of trait match/mismatch across populations. Our study focuses on a plant host–parasitic plant interaction endemic to arid and semiarid regions of Chile. The long spines of Chilean cacti have been suggested to evolve under parasite-mediated selection as a first line of defense against the mistletoe Tristerix aphyllus. The mistletoe, in turn, has evolved an extremely long morphological structure that emerges from the seed endosperm (radicle) to reach the host cuticle. When spine length was traced along cactus phylogenies, a significant association between spine length and parasitism was detected, indicating that defensive traits evolved in high correspondence with the presence or absence of parasitism in two cactus lineages. Assessment of spine-radicle matching across populations revealed a potential for coevolution in 50% of interaction pairs. Interestingly, hot spots for coevolution did not distribute at random across sites. On the contrary, interaction pairs showing high matching values occur mostly in the northern distribution of the interaction, suggesting a geographical structure for coevolution in this system. Only three sampled interaction pairs were so mismatched that reciprocal selection could not occur given current trait distributions. Overall, different lines of evidence indicate that arms-race coevolution is an ongoing phenomenon that occurs in the global system of interconnected populations.  相似文献

The scientific study of evolution in Chile has experienced periods of diversification and stasis, depending upon the social and political context at different times. In the eighteenth century, most of the natural history research consisted of systematics and taxonomy and, as in most of South America, this task was performed mainly by natural historian theologists. Later, the immigration of European scientists to Chile after independence from Spain in 1810 improved substantially its knowledge of the local biota and stimulated the diversification of naturalists in the country. Research in modern biology and the teaching of genetics in Chile can be traced back to Giovanni Noe, an Italian zoologist who had a profound impact in the first third of the twentieth century. In the 1960s–70s, Danko Brncic, a population geneticist educated in the tradition of Dobzhansky and the modern synthesis, led the most important diversification process in the study of evolutionary biology in the country. However, the military coup in 1973 brought this radiation to a sudden stop and produced a stasis period associated with the subsequent 17-year dictatorship. Evolutionary biology recovered its status after the re-establishment of democracy, and it is currently experiencing an exciting and renewed diversification period that has led to the foundation of the Chilean Society of Evolutionary Biology, the only scientific society for the study of evolution in Latin America. One of the missions of the Society is to bridge the gap between scientists and science educators in order to improve the teaching of evolution at different levels both in secular and religious schools. Even though the Roman Catholic Church has been a pivotal institution in the development of Chilean society, debate on evolutionism—creationism issues has been largely absent both in public and academic discussions. The influence of religion on science education has been sporadic, and mostly related to omission rather than tergiversation of scientific information in biology textbooks. Currently, schools are obliged by law to teach the basics of evolution in K-12 and K-16 levels (or their local equivalents). Because of this, there is little at present that suggests an organized creationist or intelligent design movement surge in the near future. Nevertheless, the high percentage of religiosity in Chile, together with the observation that the moral values of Chilean society are among the most conservative in the world, provide good reasons to remain vigilant.  相似文献

Apparent competition occurs when species that otherwise may not directly interact still exhibit negative indirect effects on one another because they share a food-limited predator (enemy). Even though this type of indirect interaction has received significant theoretical and empirical attention, alternative mechanisms producing similar results have not been considered in the literature. In this paper we document the results of a series of microcosm experiments aimed to evaluate the importance of the generalist consumer Daphnia ambigua upon the relative abundance of the more specialized Moina micrura and Ceriodaphnia dubia (Cladocera). We compared the population parameters of M. micrura and C. dubia when alone, in coexistence, and in the presence and absence of D. ambigua . While M. micrura and C. dubia did not show evidence for interspecific competition, the addition of D. ambigua promoted a reduction in the maximal population density of M. micrura , causing a pattern of indirect competition with C. dubia that resembles predator-mediated apparent competition. This result suggests that non-predatory interactions need to be considered as a potential source of apparent interactions in natural communities.  相似文献

The influence of parasites on host reproduction has been widely studied in natural and experimental conditions. Most studies, however, have evaluated the parasite impact on female hosts only, neglecting the contribution of males for host reproduction. This omission is unfortunate as sex‐dependent infection may have important implications for host–parasite associations. Here, we evaluate for the first time the independent and nonindependent effects of gender infection on host reproductive success using the kissing bug Mepraia spinolai and the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi as model system. We set up four crossing treatments including the following: (1) both genders infected, (2) both genders uninfected, (3) males infected—females uninfected, and (4) males uninfected—females infected, using fecundity measures as response variables. Interactive effects of infection between sexes were prevalent. Uninfected females produced more and heavier eggs when crossed with uninfected than infected males. Uninfected males, in turn, sired more eggs and nymphs when crossed with uninfected than infected females. Unexpectedly, infected males sired more nymphs when crossed with infected than uninfected females. These results can be explained by the effect of parasitism on host body size. As infection reduced size in both genders, infection on one sex only creates body size mismatches and mating constraints that are not present in pairs with the same infection status. Our results indicate the fitness impact of parasitism was contingent on the infection status of genders and mediated by body size. As the fecundity impact of parasitism cannot be estimated independently for each gender, inferences based only on female host infection run the risk of providing biased estimates of parasite‐mediated impact on host reproduction.  相似文献

Summary Presently, no standard protocol for objective guild recognition is consistently used by ecologists. Apart from intuitive designations of guild membership, four statistically-based protocols are currently available: those of Colwell (1977); Holmes (1979); Lawlor (1980); and Adams (1985). The first is based on nearest-neighbor variance in overlap, the second on multivariate statistics, the third on clustering techniques, and the fourth on psychometric analysis. We propose a fifth approach, first developed by Strauss (1982) for purposes other than guild recognition. We advocate the use of bootstrap procedures to resample any given empirical matrix of consumers by resources, within constraints set by either of four different randomization algorithms. Subsequently, pseudovalues of similarity in resource use between the consumers are computed and their frequency distribution is displayed in a histogram. The overlap pseudovalue that exceeds percentile 95 may be considered statistically significant and chosen as the cutoff point that identifies significant species clusters (guilds) in the original (empirical) similarity matrix. We exemplify use of this approach with the food-niche matrix obtained for a predatory assemblage in California, and discuss its implications for the general analysis of guild structure.  相似文献
