Synthesis,characterization, and electrocatalytic behaviour of hydrothermally grown nanostructured La2O3 and La2O3/K-complex

Rare earth metals play a conspicuous role in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for detecting cancerous cells. The alkali metal potassium is a neurotransmitter in the sodium–potassium pump in biomedical sciences. This unique property of rare earth metals and potassium drew our attention to carry forward this study. Therefore, in this work, previously synthesized potassium (K) complexes formed by the reflux of 4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzoic acid (DBA) and potassium hydroxide in methanol, and named [(μ2–4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzoate-κO)(μ2–4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzoic acid-κO)(4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzoic acid-κO) potassium(I) coordination polymer)] were treated hydrothermally with La₂O₃ nanomaterials to obtain a nanohybrid La₂O₃/K-complex. After that, the K-complex was analyzed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the structural and morphological properties of the as-prepared nanostructured La₂O₃/K-complex were also characterized, which involved an investigation using X-ray diffraction (XRD)spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force spectroscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. After this, the electrochemical redox behaviour of the synthesized nanohybrid material was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Therefore, the results from these studies revealed that the as-prepared material was a La₂O₃/K-complex that has a promising future role in sensing various analytes, as it showed effective electrocatalytic behaviour.     

Effect of temperature on life table parameters of Podisus nigrispinus (Het., Pentatomidae) fed with Alabama argillacea (Lep., Noctuidae) larvae

Abstract: The influence of temperature on life table parameters of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Het., Pentatomidae) fed with Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lep., Noctuidae) larvae was studied. This predator was kept at constant temperatures of 20, 23, 25, 28, 30 and 33±0.2°C, at relative humidity of 60±10% and photoperiod of L : D 14 : 10. Gross (GRR) and net ( R ₀) reproductive rates of P. nigrispinus ranged from 1.6 to 366.6 and from 0.02 to 189.5 females/female at temperatures of 33 and 28°C, respectively; generation time ( T  ) ranged from 33.3 (33°C) to 85.5 (20°C) days; doubling time ( D ) from 0.82 (33°C) to 17.8 (20°C) days; intrinsic rate of increase ( r _m ) from −0.13 (33°C) to 0.12 (28°C) per day; and the finite rate of increase ( λ ) from 0.88 (33°C) to 1.12 (28°C) females/female added to the population per day. The ideal age to release P. nigrispinus should be when this predator presents higher reproductive values (VR _x ); that is, its adults are about 7 days old, independent of prevailing temperature. Population growth of P. nigrispinus was affected by temperature with maximum numerical response between 28 and 30°C. The negative population growth shown at 33°C may not occur in natural conditions due to milder microclimate in the cotton agroecosystem and due to oscillations of temperature in the course of the day.     

High resolution microchemical analysis using soft X-ray lithographic techniques

High resolution x-ray lithographic studies of cells from chick embryo hearts dried by the CO2 critical point method have been made with soft x-ray radiation of different wavelengths. A marked difference in the relief replica in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resulting from the differential absorption by the dried cells of carbon K alpha radiation at 4.48 nm and broad band synchrotron radiation (SR) with lambda is greater than 1.5 nm demonstrates the potential usefulness of the technique in making high resolution (approximately or equal to 10 nm) chemical identification of the constitutents which make up the various parts of the cell.     

Strains of Colletotrichum coffeanum Noack Causing Coffee Berry Disease in Angola and Malawi with Characteristics Different to the Kenya Strain

Strains of Colletotrichum isolated from berries of Coffea arabica from Angola and Malawi were identified as C. coffeanum causing coffee berry disease (CBD). The isolates were highly aggressive to berries of the cultivar ‘Catimor’ and produced high numbers of acervuli and extremely large masses of pink conidia when cultivated in the dark. These strains are apparently different in aggressiveness and morphology to those described in the past from Kenya.     

Studies on the yield and gel strength of agar from Gracilaria domingensis Sonder ex Kuetzing (Gracilariales,Rhodophyta) following the addition of calcium

Studies were carried out on the seasonal variation in yield and gel strength of agar from Gacilaria domingensis with and without the addition of calcium chloride. Extraction was done with and without treatment with 1% hydrochloric acid. The results showed an increase in yield and gel strength when an alkaline solution of calcium was used, but the gel strength was low. For commercial use, Gracilaria domingensis should be mixed with better quality Gracilaria species because of its low gel strength.

Anti-inflammatory effect of l-cysteine (a semi-essential amino acid) on 5-FU-induced oral mucositis in hamsters

Oral mucositis is an inflammation of the oral mucosa mainly resulting from the cytotoxic effect of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The literature shows anti-inflammatory action of l-cysteine (l-cys) involving hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). In view of these properties, we investigate the effect of l-cys in oral mucositis induced by 5-FU in hamsters. The animals were divided into the following groups: saline 0.9%, mechanical trauma, 5-FU 60–40 mg/kg, l-cys 10/40 mg and NaHS 27 µg/kg. 5-FU was administered on days 1st to 2nd; 4th day excoriations were made on the mucosa; 5th–6th received l-cys and NaHS. For data analysis, histological analyses, mast cell count, inflammatory and antioxidants markers, and immunohistochemistry (cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)/inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOs)/H₂S) were performed. Results showed that l-cys decreased levels of inflammatory markers, mast cells, levels of COX-2, iNOS and increased levels of antioxidants markers and H₂S when compared to the group 5-FU (p < 0.005). It is suggested that l-cys increases the H₂S production with anti-inflammatory action in the 5-FU lesion.
