Many plants have been known to be contaminated and accumulate plasticizers from the environment, including water sources, soil, and atmosphere. Plasticizers are used to confer elasticity and flexibility to various fiber and plastic products. Consumption of plasticizers can lead to many adverse effects on human health, including reproductive and developmental toxicity, endocrine disruption, and cancer. Herein, we report for the first time that two plasticizers, bis(2-ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DEHT) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), have been isolated from the leaves of Capparis spinosa L. (the caper bush), a plant that is widely used in food seasonings and traditional medicine. 297 mg/kg of DEHT and 48 mg/kg of DEHP were isolated from dried and grounded C. spinosa L. leaves using column chromatography and semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. Our study adds to the increase in the detection of plasticizers in our food and medicinal plants and to the alarming concern about their potential adverse effects on human health.  相似文献

Alkali extracted mycelial biomass from Aspergillus niger, referred to as Biosorb, was found to sequester metal ions (Cd2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+ and Co2+) efficiently both from dilute and concentrated solutions upto 10% of its weight (w/w). Sequestration of metal ions from a mixture was also efficient but with attendant antagonisms. The kinetics of metal binding by Biosorb indicated that it is a rapid process and about 70–80% of the metal is removed from solution in 5 min followed by a slower rate. The mechanism of metal binding is shown to be due to exchange of calcium and magnesium ions of the Biosorb during which equimolar concentrations of both the ions were released into the medium. Following this an efficient procedure for the regeneration and reuse of Biosorb was standardized by washing the biosorbent with calcium and magnesium solution (0.1 m). Biosorbents prepared from Neurospora, Fusarium and Penicillium also exhibited similar mechanisms for metal ion binding, though they had a lower metal binding capacity when compared with Biosorb. Chemical modification of carboxylic acid functional groups of the Biosorb resulted in loss of 90% of metal binding capacity which could not be restored even on regeneration. The significance of this finding on the metal sequestration mechanisms of microbial biosorbents is discussed.  相似文献

Annual gross primary productivity in mesotrophic Shahidullah Hall pond (Dhaka, Bangladesh) was 1383.35 g C m−2 y−1 (arithmetic mean). Daily primary productivity (between 1.6 and 6.8 g C m−2 d−1 was correlated with chlorophylla, day length and dissolved silica. Chlorophylla related significantly withk, incident light, SRP, alkalinity and conductivity. A negative correlation existed between biomass and rainfall. Productivity, biomass, conductivity, alkalinity, and SRP increased after mid-winter.k, I k andZ eu varied according seasonally.P max related directly with temperature. Seasonal variation of ∝ B was 0.0049–0.0258 mg C (mg chla mmol PAR)−1 m−2. Q10 was 2.12, community respiration 1334.99 g C m−2 y−1, and the underwater light climate 186.43μE m−2 s−1.  相似文献

Analyses by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the smallest organisms in surface waters can be used to assess ecosystem health; the evidence for this statement is reviewed and recommendations are made for optimal use of TEM technology in providing such assessments. Those groups of small organisms currently being considered as indicators of ecosystem health (viruses, bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton, and autotrophic nanoplankton) are reviewed briefly as subjects for monitoring by TEM. New information on direct counting by TEM of viral femtoplankton indicates that viruses can be present in numbers 103 to 107 times greater than previously estimated by the traditional counts of plaque-forming units using various host bacteria. Such concentrations indicate that virus infections may exert ecological control over planktonic microbes. Ultrastructural research on prokaryotic picoplankton suggests that TEM analyses of cells in ultra-thin sections can be used to speciate the picoplankton and to diagnose them for cytological modifications related to environmental stress. Considering their great importance, episodically, to primary productivity and to modulating the speciation of higher levels in the food web, such picoplankton ultrastructural analyses could be pursued with profit as a diagnostic tool. For decades, the ultrastructure of some eukaryotic nanoplankton has been known to vary in specific ways to specific stresses in laboratory experiments. An extension of these structure-function correlations is potentially a useful tool to provide indicators of ecosystem health. The barriers to progress in such research are now understood and can be overcome.  相似文献

Laminaran, fucose-containing polysaccharides (‘fucans’) and alginic acid were isolated from Dictyopteris plagiogramma.The laminaran comprised G- and M-chains (ratio 3: 1). The ‘fucans’ were present in four extracts of a four-step sequential extraction procedure and all contained slightly differing proportions of fucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, glucuronic acid residues and half-ester sulphate. Non-reducing chain ends as well as the positions of glycosidic linkages to fucose, xylose and glucuronic acid are the same as previously reported for other ‘fucans’. Galactose and mannose occur mainly as trisubstituted residues with substitution at 0-1, 0-3, 0-4 and at 0-1, 0-3, 0-6, respectively.  相似文献

Mitochondria are frequently observed in the vicinity of chloroplasts in photosynthesizing cells, and this association is considered necessary for their metabolic interactions. We previously reported that, in leaf palisade cells of Arabidopsis thaliana, mitochondria exhibit blue‐light‐dependent redistribution together with chloroplasts, which conduct accumulation and avoidance responses under the control of blue‐light receptor phototropins. In this study, precise motility analyses by fluorescent microscopy revealed that the individual mitochondria in palisade cells, labeled with green fluorescent protein, exhibit typical stop‐and‐go movement. When exposed to blue light, the velocity of moving mitochondria increased in 30 min, whereas after 4 h, the frequency of stoppage of mitochondrial movement markedly increased. Using different mutant plants, we concluded that the presence of both phototropin1 and phototropin2 is necessary for the early acceleration of mitochondrial movement. On the contrary, the late enhancement of stoppage of mitochondrial movement occurs only in the presence of phototropin2 and only when intact photosynthesis takes place. A plasma‐membrane ghost assay suggested that the stopped mitochondria are firmly adhered to chloroplasts. These results indicate that the physical interaction between mitochondria and chloroplasts is cooperatively mediated by phototropin2‐ and photosynthesis‐dependent signals. The present study might add novel regulatory mechanism for light‐dependent plant organelle interactions.  相似文献
